    I've been making a fertilizer out of wood ash (from my ceramics kiln) and chicken poop, from the backyard coop. I try to balance Ph using a small proportion of ash, but sometimes Ph correction is still necessary. I use a weak solution of that and a 20-20-20 mineral NPK, in turns. Do you think the ash can bring enough usable calcium? Ash is 30%ish Calcium Oxide, I wonder if the plant can use that.

    • @thenaturecompany
      @thenaturecompany 2 дні тому

      from what I understand Calcium Oxide when added to water reacts to form Calcium Carbonate and Calcium Hydroxide so it can be quite caustic . I am not sure what other reactions will take place when combining it with the chicken manure or how it will react to the minerals in the NPK mix .

    Terrific video. I bought a cymbidium. I love it. I can see new growth but I think I will have to repot it sooner than later. On the offshoot, what is the pest that was on there? I’ve noticed it on my other plants and I’ve tried to get rid of it and it seems to keep coming back.

    I just got this semi terete vanda and instead of planting it in a pot of sand medium, I simply tie it on a wood without any medium like mokara. I ain't sure how to water these semi terete vanda. Is it through the stem like mokara or just the root like vanda ?

    • @thenaturecompany

      If you have it out in full sun , where it will flower at its best you will have to water very frequently and you can spray the whole plant like you do with your Mokaras 👍

    does over fertilization promotes growth but hampers flowering in general?

      Over fertilization can cause other problems too , toxic buildup of different nutrients , root burn and cause certain nutrients to be blocked from being absorbed.

      Hi, I assumed you are talking about western cymbidiums here. I have grown both western cymbidiums and Asian cymbidiums as well. Living in Southern California, I have the advantage of suitable weather for western cymbidiums. This is my practice for my cymbidiums which having flowers between December through Spring months. You may have to adjust slightly depending where you live. You need to provide a mild fertilizer to the cymbidiums between the end of Spring, Summer, and Fall months. I fertilized my cymbidiums twice a month (with high Nitrogen content). The rest of the water cycle without fertilizers. You also make sure they have adequate morning sun light (a few hours before the strong light at noon). The cymbidium leaves should be slightly with yellow color, not too green. Strong light will burn the leaves, especially mid day sun. By October month, you can switch the fertilizer to high Potassium content. Some people use 20/20/20 fertilizer throughout the year and I think it is OK too. During Winter, you need to shock the plants with colder temperature at night ( a cooler temperature than day time temperature of 7 to 10 degrees, I mean). Some people wake up the plants without water for awhile as well (this method is reserved for experienced growers only since you would kill the plant this way). I forget to mention that you should check the roots and the media in the pot to assure they have healthy roots or not. Sometimes, having root problem, the plant cannot have flowers. Watering them when they are running dried during hot days. In general, if you keep the plant happy, you will be rewarded with flowers. Good luck.
