Good afternoon, This beautiful Orchid is at Daisies and Dreams Nursery on the Bluff. Sadly she's out of bloom. Let me know if you would like to make an offer on her
OMG what a specimen, it would require a display room of its own!! Have looked at the price, quite a bargain, if you have the money. One of the labled orchids I inherited from next door was a dendrobium farmeri-thyrsiflorum, it has had two flower spikes in the last few weeks. No expert but very similar flower to those in the video. I'm expecting that after I transplanted it in new medium, and removed the scale (it was actually taken out of its original rotting pot and left on the ground for a while) it will probably take a while to recover due to its parent species, it does have the beginning of a new shoot though :) everything crossed. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, because of this video I now know to be very patient with this one and hopefully live long enough to see it become a healthy sizable orchid.
It could also very well be the same as your hybrid too , these really are such rewarding orchids . I am sure it will reward you for looking after it 💕 Maybe one day you will be able to use it as a chandelier in your growing area 😍
While watching I switched to google for the names you mentioned and for better understanding. That was fun. Never seen such a big plant. We only have a annual show + sales here and some big specimen sizes are just 'Not for Sale!' Didn't find the price in the comments yet but I also would like to know it as I have no idea at all. The most I paid for a single plant was 80 € (1.500 Rands). Both were in flower so definitely 'blooming size'. Many regards ❣
@@thenaturecompany 😯that's a suuuper price esp. knowing how much some online vendors want for 'individual pieces'. For whatever reason I was wondering how late it is in SA, so far away. Surprise... we have the same day-/nighttime, only different seasons 😯So, sleep well 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑
you are not wrong there , some of the prices for small plants surprises me sometimes lol ... oh yeah we are on the CET time line . I hope you had a great rest too 🫂💕
This cannot be less that R30000. Well, I wouldn't expect it to be lessthant that. Im eager to know the price, such a magnificent specimen. Great content as always!!!
Whoa! It's ginormous! I never knew they could get that big!😳😳 I'm gonna guess it was at least $1000. (US) i'm sorry you weren't able to purchase it. It certainly is a show-stopper!😊
It’s hard to place a price on something like that. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Like for all hobbies, the item in question can be worth nothing to being priceless. The thing I worry about is that it does not propagate which to me, means you have exactly one chance to keep it alive. For whatever reason if the conditions aren’t ideal, your investment is for naught. Also, it’s a specimen that can only be enjoyed by you alone unless you have some type of exhibition platform. But for such a huge specimen, $US 600 seems low. You can find all sorts of much smaller specimens for $50-100 on eBay alone. But then again, you would expect this specimen to be this large because you can’t divide it. It’s like having a two headed horse…. I bet the owner might be grateful to get rid of it to someone who hopefully knows what to do with it to keep it alive. Don’t feel too bad that you didn’t get this unicorn of a plant. Can you imagine if you spent $600 just to watch it slowly die because it didn’t like the transport? Besides, who has the space for something like that?
For sure all your points are 100% logical and the purchase would have been done on am emotional level to be honest lol . I just hope the guy who bought it has a space where we can visit it again on the next flowering , it will be great to follow up this plant for a few years
@@thenaturecompany you’re absolutely right. It’s like with art and jewelry collectors. They spend millions on a piece but only a very select few can ever see or enjoy it. At least with jewelry, it won’t degrade or mold unlike paintings stored in inappropriate atmospheric/ambient conditions and in this case, a living organism. I hope the new owner will exhibit it is grand fashion allowing all orchid lovers to see or visit it and have the resources to give it the ideal care and conditions it needs. It would be a huge loss if it dies or simply dwindles… like losing the last dodo bird- it’s a huge responsibility. In any case, I love you channel because it allows me not only to see what beautiful plant specimens there are out there and the meticulous education/experience you provide but you also bring us on your travels so we can live vicariously through you. Also, you seem like a very kind person.
ahh you making me blush 😊thanks for the compliments , we are glad you are getting value from our content and appreciate your feed back . and for sure if that orchid died I would cry no doubt... Thank you for joining us and I hope we can keep things interesting for you 💕🫂
My first thoughts when I looked at it midway through your commentary was Dendrobium Chet's choice. If this plant is so hard to get cuttings off for propagation it's hardly worth the investment.
I think it is more about it being a collectors piece than being a money spinner . Having this as a display item also would give you a lot of credibility as a grower which gives you some sort of 'soft power' . For me something like this is priceless
@@thenaturecompany I guess everyone has different reason to spend big on orchids. I'm a production horticulturist from the core. So it's all about return of investment
I understand you 100% while we ran the nursery I was notorious for dividing everything up all the time , my partner said I could never leave them alone 🤣
I'm a rank beginner - never been to an orchid sale, so I have no clue about prices. Have never seen a flowering dendrobium except a hard-cane plant with small white flowers that my wife brought home from a "groente mark". That one nearly died, but I managed to nurse it back and am hoping to see it flower again. I'll take a flyer ..... R10 grand?😂
I am sure in the US it could easily reach those numbers with the exchange rate here that is multiplied by 17.40 which would make it unaffordable . But all things considered I think it is really worth that much . At the price it sold for it went so fast we did not get the chance lol it was 10K which is just under $600
@@thenaturecompany Whoa! I was way off the mark! I was once offered a dark form of Cattleya schroederae that cost half again as much as that. And if I'd had the money to spare, I'd have gotten it! The one thing which I think would detract from the value of this otherwise magnificent specimen Dendrobium is the uncertainty of the parentage which you point out.
for sure we rushed to go try get the plant but it had already sold , so I guess that also says how inexpensive it really was , I don't think the sellers knew what to ask for it , so the buyer I feel did get a bargain . 💯
luv your green thumb ,,, but for me it is not the name but all about the flowering ,, a rose by any other name,,, still a flowering beauty,,, you have so much knowledge, l look at that as a curse sometimes ,,, us $110
These Dendrobiums are some of my favorites 💕💕
this would be any ones favorite
That is amazing! 😮😮😊
standing next to it made you feel kinda special 🫂💕

What an incredible orchid. Just huge. If it sold for R10000 then that is a bargain. Thanks for sharing the video.
it really was and we would have gone without food for a while to get it 🤣
Hi I am in Australia and have a very small Dendrobium thyrsiflorum that has exactly the same flower and stems.
have you considered it may be a hybrid ? there are so many variations out there sometimes we just never know 💕

Was the plant grown in KZN?
yes for the majority , I am not sure where the original grower was from , but for the last 40 years 👍

What was the price for this magnificent beast?
it was sold for 10K

My guess... $2250 - but I would love to know how far I am off the mark.

I saw this plant 10 years ago in Pinetown. Still the largest Den I have ever seen. Love to know the price Just transporting it would be $$$
yeah I can imagine the transport would also cost a pretty penny
