WORKING WITH COMPOSITES | Paikea's Transom Extension
This short video is part of our Transom extension and removing old rudders video. If you have not seen the entire video you can check it out on our Sailing Paikea playlist or over on our website blog youngbarnacles.com/transom-extension-hull-preparation-for-paint-and-removing-old-rudders/
The transom extension was such a great project on Paikea. The addition of a step/platform to made entering and exiting the water easier and it also gave us something to step on and off from when getting in and out of our dinghy.
We have a full video that includes this section you can check out the link at the end of the video or here ua-cam.com/video/7IndtywMSkM/v-deo.html

Repairing the crack in our starboard hull
Переглядів 4,3 тис.4 місяці тому
We have a large crack in the bottom of the starboard hull. It runs longitudinally from the engine room door to the entrance of the aft cabin. Honestly, it looks worse than it actually is, as Shayne had already repaired the hull from the outside when we did our first major upgrades in Valencia so there is no risk of water ingress or us sinking. It does, however, need to be fixed. Hauling out thi...

What benefits could possibly outweigh the cost of the extra weight and space it takes up on board our tiny weight-sensitive floating home? youngbarnacles.com/3d-printed-rudder-winglets/ WEBSITE For more information you can find us at young...

We have started our refit! Paikea is out of the water in Barcelona and Shayne is spending whatever spare minutes he has from America's Cup work to help the boys and me with work on our own boat. Harry takes us through what our plans are for the interior refit of Paikea. It is ambitious and a crazy amount of work especially since Shayne is busy with 60 hours a week in Americas' Cup world but if ...

Approaching the Azores on our Catana42
Переглядів 3 тис.6 місяців тому
Continuing our journey from Saint Martin in the Caribbean to Barcelona, Spain. We are about to make landfall in the Azores! The island of Fayal is not far away and Paikea is dealing with big seas and a lot of breeze before the wind dies completely on our final day of passage. As soon as the wind dies and we are forced to turn our engines on for the last 24 hours before we make landfall, Shayne ...

    Aren't they all using Torlon or some similar type of bearing and races that won't rust? I don't see why they would be using any ferrous material in these components.

    It looks like you did not put an aft bulkhead on that extension. Is the aft only fiberglass (monolithic) laminate?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles 3 місяці тому

      There was no need for an additional aft bulkhead because we did not extend the waterline. The extension only squared up the aft transom to make a step/swimming platform. Paikea's structure is foam core with glass and this is why we did the repair with foam and glass. The old transom that we removed (the piece you see being cut out) was monolithic.

    Thanks for the informative video. For those of us who can't splash out $2000 for couple of dyneema nets, what are the second best options on the budget in terms of keeping the net stable (not squishy or bouncy) and as tight as possible? I've heard people had good experience with generic knotless nets (like those for golf and fishing and various industrial purposes) - some reported 12 years in salty UV conditions, and cost them less than £100. Cheers!

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles 3 місяці тому

      I was sceptical at first about spending so much money on trampoline netting but Shayne was adamant about it. I have to admit that he was right (🙄🤫 omg don't let him see that comment 😅) I'm yet to see anything comparable to our dyneema netting. Yes it's expensive but we are years down the track now and it still looks and feels as good as the day we installed it. ua-cam.com/video/M7BBDdhfVL4/v-deo.html

    Shayne you mentioned a locking headboard for the mainsail that locks open, which manufacturer was that? Does the video on your site show what you use to secure turnbuckles?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles 3 місяці тому

      Do you mean the "pull to engage" locking system that we have on Paikea? There isn't anything good for smaller yachts/cats out there. Shayne custom made ours. Rigging Projects make them for much bigger boats but do not make anything smaller for cruising vessels. Antal has tried to do something but it isn't very successful and we wouldn't recommend it. Same with Harkens attempt. In terms of securing turnbuckles we use M4 cap head bolt(screws) with ny-lock nuts. These go in the thread ends of the turnbuckles instead of split rings. We cover them in this video here ua-cam.com/video/mNXejSmeEE8/v-deo.htmlsi=SVuimy9Q5KVAx47J
