Spanish Floods and Race Boats
It's always busy but this last few weeks have been INSANE! End of school year for the junior youngbarnacles, refit continues on Paikea, thendevastation for Valencia with massive floods and still trying to get Balthasar project wrapped up before the yacht is shipped to the Caribbean.
Hoping we got the right mix of work and entertainment in this one.

Repairing the crack in our starboard hull

It does, however, need to be fixed. Hauling out thi...

    I’m interested in effectiveness of your 3dp cyclone. I tried two types on RD and gave up, went to a bagged Karcher with Dust Class M bags. My cyclones only trapped ~50% of the fine fibreglass / filler / paint dust. The karcher is so much quieter.

    At the beginning where you were talking about the metal fittings needing to be of high quality, I was thinking about the possibility of using rope hinges on doors, those figure-8 lashings. I've not seen it done before, but if rudders were attached to the hull using rope hinges, why can't one use them on doors. I guess that they aren't great for doors that need to be water tight, but I am sure that something could be done....

      Ha! Yeah we've discussed making doorways bigger. Since these are for the engine room we've left them as is. We may change the doorways throughout the rest of the boat. Nice to see I’m not the only one itching from all the fiberglass dust 😅. It’s been a one month slog of cutting out all the old wood and glass in my 2 lockers in front of my mast. Water had gotten under the wood and rotted a lot of it. I managed to get vinyl ester resin which is so much nicer to work with than polyester which even finds its way through latex gloves. I also choose flocoat instead of paint. Catana used a shitty grey paint that just peels everywhere it’s put after a few years. Happy to just have finished this so we can get back to cruising…

    yay welcome back have you given any thought to using outboards instead of diesel engines, I've seen some cats and 12m monos using them as main propulsion system aside from sails of course, would like to hear ead your opinion on it

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles Місяць тому

      We would not have outboards on Paikea. There are two main reasons for this. First outboards use petrol and not diesel. Petrol is more volatile than diesel so it is undesirable to carry around onboard the boat. Secondly, in emergency situations outboards are terrible in a sea state. Inboard engines tend to be better placed in order to deal with waves etc and stay in the water. However if you had a coastal boat then outboards would be a great option. There are massive advantages in being able to take them out and take to a mechanic if there is a problem. So we like the idea of outboards but retro fitting something to Paikea without it being a massive undertaking and solving the problems I've mentioned above aren't worth the exercise for us.

    • @pironiero
      @pironiero Місяць тому

      @@youngbarnacles yeah i see your pinky, about that wavy segment -i think you misunderstood me, i meant inboard outboard, basically installed in a well

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles Місяць тому

      Outboards placed in wells would be the solution we would use if we were to go down the outboards on Paikea route. However there are lots of technical challenges with that. We built a fully solar electric boat this way and we still had cavitation issues around the outboard engines when they were in the water (not a lot but more than desirable). We also had issues with getting the hole plugs to work properly on the outboard leg when outboard went up and down. With the move towards diesel outboards this option is becoming a more viable option to consider.

    “And this very precise dose of catalyst to ensure that this will go off just before I’m done” 😂😂 yup… I’ve been having pretty decent results diluting flowcoat with acetone to achieve a smoother finish with fewer brush strokes. Any thoughts on this? have always wondered if I’m compromising the curing process by doing that as I’m not equipped to test hardness of the cured product ? Also big fan of the doorframes, did you have access to a mould or make your own?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles Місяць тому

      Don't dilute with acetone Tom!!! I learnt this the hard way. Yes you can away with it but it does affect the final product. The best practice is to use styrene monomer as a thinning agent. You don't need much as it is very effective. We made a mould for the door frames

I‘m just before starting my ruder refit due to water inside of it and I was wondering if I should add some winglets as well, as I‘m re-laminating the outside as well. I thought of using symmetrical surf keel fins from the surf industry, as my boat is 27“ monohull only. Do you think this could work,??? And is there a specific angle the winglets should be mounted? Any lifting moment to be included or simply 90 degree towards the ruder and straight direction of the forward speed direction?? (Hope you‘ll understand what I mean eventhough my English is not the best). Keep on the great work you’re doing. Thanks!

    Your videos are awesome- so educational! For a 50 foot catamaran with an 85 mm2 mainsail, what are the pros and cons of blocks attached to webbing loops for reef points 1 and 2, versus perhaps a block at the luff and low friction ring at leech? I guess I am curious about pros/cons of using blocks vs LFR, e.g. friction in system, reefing line chafe, etc. Thanks!!!

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles Місяць тому

      Low friction rings are good for high loaded and slow, low moving parts so you wouldn't use it on a mainsheet as it is a high loaded and high movement part. Basically don't use them on sheets. However something like a reef line is a high loaded low movement part so a low friction ring would be suited to this application.
