  • In our previous video we told you why we bought a 33 year old catamaran instead of nice new shiny one. Now it's time to take you on a tour of the old girl. This week is all about the aft end of the bus. The transom and cockpit in particular.
    Join us as Shayne talks about what features of the boat we love, what we have already upgraded and what is in store next for Paikea.

    Shane as smart as you are, as much sailing experience you have, and yet have not put a foam roll at the top of the cockpit doorway surprizes the heck out of me. he he he

    I've been a mono sailor for years but am looking at a selection of cats for my next boat. Actually this will be my first (and hopefully only) brand new boat so I'm understandably being careful and taking my time). I was always dead set against those arse-out style of helms and was looking at something with a forward pit and internal helm which obviously robs a load of space. But your very calm and laid back description of how you use them may have just sold them to me, or least made me give them more consideration. Thanks man. Ed.

    Great tour......couple of questions;
    • What are your thoughts on extending the cockpit roof structure to include a roof top traveller, intergrated tender davits, at the same time you raise the solar panels to reduce shading issues. Most designs seem to be hanging the tenders but I have always thought about having a small ~400mm extension lip (swim platform/transom rack) to the bottom of the bridgedeck overhanging the transom with two side pivoting dingy rack arms to cradle the tender (still lift with davit)
    • What are your thoughts on the HH44 transom concept to solve the pooping issues inherent with walkthrough transom designs?
    • Have you thought about vertical sliding window solution for the bulkhead?.....maximises opening, you could split the windows with a support post if you need to add structural integrity to the bulkhead

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому +1

      A traveller on the cockpit roof and extension to include dinghy davits and solar is an excellent idea but in our situation it would mean the hardtop structure would need a heap of beefing up to deal with the extra loads making it a lot more heavier than the 40kgs it currently is. We would also have to think about how we would get all the control lines into the cockpit to trim sails. More corners to go around means more friction etc. In the end we decided the best way is usually the most simple. Less things to go wrong. If we were to build our own design we would most likely do something like you suggest.
      Same weight consideration for us with dinghy davits/swim platform. We will always look for the lightest solution as we suffer from weight issues. Adding a swim platform is more structure and weight although I do like the concept of swing out cradles for offshore sailing.

    • @bunyipdan
      @bunyipdan Рік тому +1

      @@youngbarnacles @youngbarnacles Thanks for response, totally understand your position regarding weight and line routing solutions, the suggested swim platform would be slatted to minimise weight but I guess like you have said any additions are additions. Always look at the solar being mounted below the coach roof as very compromised from shading.
      With weight being so critical bit surprised with your skills you haven't slapped together your ow OCT carbon tender.
      Look forward to see your future upgrades, cheers

    I always wondered how much friction those big s.s. drums created on the old Catanas... On our boat we put the clutches almost the same spot, same lines straight from the mast but the winch on top. The bimini had JUST enough clearance for the winch handle. Is the s.s. drum a complete circle? Could you cut it and fit some big bearings at the ends? I also fitted a rounded rain lip on the aft end of the cabin + glued on some small pultruded glass angle around the other 3 sides and the whole cabin top became a rain catcher surface with little hose barbs at a low spot. Fit a hose when it rained, right into a jug or the internal tanks. Good simple modification. Rain lip was a plastic tube covered with a few layers of glass. Needed to be high enough to also be a bit of a handhold lip.

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому

      We put a rain catcher system on our hardtop too. It's such a good idea I don't understand why everyone doesn't do it. The SS drum is only 3/4 way round so if we wanted to improve the system we would have to replace the drum with something else.

    Shayne, there was a clip in this video where it looked like you were explaining the reef tack line arrangement. Is this from an older video or are you guys planning on an in depth video? Would love to hear your thoughts on reefing systems (efficiency, reliability, ease of effort, etc). Cheers!

    Yes, I love the transom. So easy to deal with my dingy, it's like pulling up to the dock. I would like to know the parts that you use and where you got them from for the center winch system, would you be able to share the brands and source? Especially at the base of the mast. What size winch? I am most definitely putting that on my cat. When I sailed from Panama to Guatemala, I grew to love my boat even more. I mostly bought her because I could afford her and she looked like a sailing boat. Lol, didn't know a thing about what I was doing. I got lucky kind of, she needs a lot of work. Lol. 🙂

    What about a rolling sheet "guide" for the main sheets on cabin top edge instead of a stationary stainless "chaff champion"? Like your grandma's rolling pin.

    on our new boat (the townsville to Bundy trip boat) we have a central wheel with everything coming back to the central point, literally everything is there including genoa sheets, furler line, mainsheet etc. the only thing not there is the traveler control. However what is annoying the shit out of me is the single line reefing. I get the theory that you just keep pulling on the line and it all falls into place, however I still find I have to go to the mast to free up some of the line and I'm thinking of replacing the whole lot with two line reefing which means a lot less line to pull, yes a trip to the mast to fasten the main luff down but it just feels simpler. We only have two reefing points in our gorgeous new square top main, but I want a third for when the shit really hits the fan. What are your thoughts on one vs two line reefing?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому

      No brainer. 2 line reefing is the way to go. There is just too much friction for the single line reefing idea to work. BTW I got Anna to put 4 reefs in our mainsail.

    Lots of great into in this one Shane, thanks! Do you have any thoughts on tiller steering on performance cruising cats? I noticed one of your kids standing next to you at the helm had to clamber over the seating to get to a line on the deck and wondered if a tiller and maybe outboard helm seat would leave more room for easier deck access. I noticed the ORC 57 has this design. This way access to the deck isn't blocked by the helmsman, but may have other downsides I haven't thought of?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому

      I'm a fan of tiller steering however every option has its compromise. The best thing about the setup we have now is that it is good for the autopilot and when cruising, the autopilot is used 90 percent of the time.
      The direct connection to the rudders that the tiller steer provides is awesome for performance and racing situations and of course the pure simplicity of the setup.

    So with the rotating mast, is there some sort of preventer or physical catch in place to protect against a catastrophic event in the event the control lines break at an an opportune time?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому +1

      No. It's not a problem. We actually sailed with it for ages without any control lines. It just moves back and forth a bit. Worst part is that it messes with wind instrument readings as it moves.

    Hello again! I went back and looked at the drone shots of your Sailboat. I saw you have dadderboards and obviously you have a stout you'd crew to attend raising and lowering the boards in their trunk(s), however, on nite passages and in uncharted shoal areas or for that matter coarr heads or running up beaches
    daggerboards are dangerous to the trunks or hull integrity even with Crush
    boxes! I appreciate tour attention to detail ,again gorgeous convenience and safety , thus I would very much like to expose you to SCABBOARDS vrs the daggerboards as they offer SAFETY without diminishing preformance!
    SCABBOARDS are 40% lighter yet provide the same depth of draft without extending above the deck even withdrawn In shoal conditions. let's talk!

    • @ysesq
      @ysesq Рік тому

      those were a failed concept in 2012 for spring loaded daggerboards. it wont work because they will break under side loads.

    I cannot seem to find this exact model on sailboatdata, not a boat that is this size and appearance under designed by the Australian designer Lock Crowther. Is this Crowther design #226, maybe Catana 411, maybe Crowther 42 from the year 2000. Thanks.

      @@youngbarnacles Thanks. Notes say: The first catamaran built by Catana. Two versions were built:
      1984-1988 - 40c, 11 built.
      1989-1992 - 40s, 5 built (The 40s had a narrower beam). So, you have the narrower beam version?

      I'm not sure. Paikea is the 42s. I know they used the same molds but can't say for sure about the rest of the specifications. There is not much information on it, we were lucky and just happened the meet the guy who used to manage the Catana yard when the Catana42s were being built. He gave us some info on theses boats. We were told the "s" stood for 6 bedrooms which was the charter version.

    What is the semi transparent circle in the hardtop?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому +7

      It's honeycomb nomex/fibreglass construction and lets the light through but is not transparent. We open the hatch up while sailing to view sails

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому +6

      The hardtop structure is made from the foredeck of an old Americas Cup Yacht. The hatch was originally the place where they launched and retrieved the spinnaker from. We repurposed it into a viewing hatch
