  • You may be surprised to hear that we think not everything needs to be made from carbon fibre. Oh yeah, it looks cool and it's super strong but do we really need to throw all those extra bucks at it so that we can say it's made in carbon? Not really.
    In this episode, we talk about the materials we used to make the rudder and tiller arm and discuss the concept of being "fit for purpose". Not every part of your boat needs to be made from that black shiny stuff we call carbon fibre. In fact, some pieces are better off when they are NOT carbon. And sometimes, we just don't have the budget to make everything out of the most expensive materials. Get a glimpse of our thought process and reasoning behind why we chose to go with the materials we did for our tiller arm and rudder in our latest installment.

    Excellent … Excellent … Excellent.
    Congrats on the AC assignment. Professional recognition says it all. General popularity is one thing, but the true test is recognition ‘within’ the professional competitive community.
    Much Respect!
    I’ve enjoyed your YT contributions from day one, and I’m delighted to see you post once again.
    I love multi-hulls … (sorry, I once owned one of those Sh…y FP cats which was damaged in Tortola thanks to those gnarly twin sisters ‘Irma & Maria’, I then repaired it in Puerto Rico.)
    Love watching your work and discovering tips, tricks, and observations 😎

    Could you recommend a book to learn more on how to select material for what and how to build them? I would like to practice with some stuff in my very old boat.

    What would be really cool is self trimming wing sails (similar to saildrone, but possibly hoistable and dousable).

    Swapped out the steering hoses on RD for noj conductive to remove some of that potential difference issues. Worked a treat and is pretty orange.

    Thank you for the full explanation of the rudder tab size from a few videos ago. I had not considered the bonding issues with e-glass to stainless. I was also wondering why we were not seeing videos of your passage to Trinidad. How are you all getting along in Vilanova now? Are you all still living aboard? Congratulations on your selection, but I will still be rooting for American Magic 😜

    I think a carbon stock is a better choice on a cat when considering impact resistance. We like our rudders to run as close as possible to the underside of the hull for the “end plate” effect. In the event of a large impact this almost certainly means a bent metal stock, which buries the rudder blade into the hull. The hole it creates is the least of your worries, the bent rudder will prevent the other rudder from operating- at least until you find a way to decouple the two rudders. On the other hand, an impact violent enough to snap the carbon shaft may also fully remove that rudder from the equation. Potentially leaving you with one operational rudder? I’m sure there are many variables that would create an alternative outcome. Is this a sound premise?

      a rudder which wont break will put a hole in the hull.

      I remember a Beneteau 60 which almost did it over a reef; The keel past over it with the wave but not the rudder. The GRP stock did not break, so the entire stern stayed on the reef, alone.

      Yes, I would agree with your analysis. And a bent rudder is a whole new world of hurt. We have hydraulic steering on Paikea and although I'm not really a fan of it, it does have the option to open a valve to release coupled rudders if the need arises. I do still prefer the casette style rudders (like Gunboat) over a stock arrangement however I'm not about to do those sort of modifications to Paikea any time soon.

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому +1

      our rudder blade is designed with a sacrifical tip so that if we hit something it will break off however if the stock is hit hard enough it will put a hole in the boat. Paikea has water tight compartments behind the stock which are designed to deal with that scenario

      @@youngbarnacles it’s a composite of epoxy and layers of the highest quality woods. You can shape it into any profiled rudderblade it has a durablility guaranty of thirty years unprotected in water. It maybe slightly heavier than your rudders, but that depends on howmany layers you had to apply.

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому

      Ah ok. We wouldn't put any wood on our boat especially below the waterline. We're busy trying to get the stuff off Paikea 😅
