Shayne I feel the enormity of issues you are tackling. Can't imagine how to approach all of the challenges your family is going to face. But You and your family are on shore and safe. Your brilliant and resourceful and have a family that's ready to tackle anything. I can't wait to see how you fix everything.
Thank you for the words of encouragement. We're going to tackle it piece by piece. The family loves boat life and want to help it as much as they can so fingers crossed I can manage an AC campaign and a boat refit 🤞
Happy Christmas Paikea! Chainplate episode is helping me with my project to put runners on our 471. Fond memories of racing the boys in parent/kid regatta in Antigua a while back...even if Harry got the last Laser available ;) Until our paths cross again!
Excited for the project, especially the new carbon rudders. Happy to CNC cut Rudderplugs from MDF or tooling board if needed. Just reach out if interested!
Your boat shows signs of being submerged at some point with all the cracks and rotten bulkheads. Hopefully this will be the end of unscheduled repairs. I love all the carbon upgrades you have been doing!
We can sort of see where you may think that may be the case. However, the bulkheads can't rot as they are all foam and glass. The only exception to that is where there was a plywood insert for the original chainplate set up. The rot for that came from water on deck seeping through bolt holes. The crack came from the previous owner putting a block in the wrong place when taking the boat out of the water. We repaired It on the out side a couple of years ago and were waiting for the inside to show signs of movement before opening it up and repairing it. It was opened up in the yard in Barcelona when a block was put in the wrong place again like what happend to the previous owner. One of the cool things about our catamaran is that it won't sink. There is enough bouancy and the boat light enough to not sink 👍
Really pleased to see your re fit and keen to hear of the weight savings , I,m just starting on a smaller scale on my cat. good luck with keeping going with both this and the AC work .
An enormous undertaking but that’s going to be some sort of Super Catana when it’s finished. I had the same problem removing the rudders on our 48R and ended up using penetrating solution of acetone and diesel with an impact wrench. I would think both our rudders are in the 20+ kilo range but I didn’t weigh them and I haven’t got the knowledge and skill to build them out of carbon so I am green with rudder envy right now. I have also looked at ripping out the vinyl but it’s just too big a job for me and I want to launch and sail before I die of old age. Kudos to you guys ! Team Paikea 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Let's hope so. It won't be like other modern boats with all the modern conveniences. Just a light weight performance cruiser with a comfortable interior is the goal.
We'd love to show you but no can do I'm afraid. Everyone involved in the Americas Cup have to sign NDAs. We can say that the boats are super high tech and very cool 😎. It's getting more like an aeroplane than a sailing boat.
Wow, talk about a refit. Very curious how much wood furniture you remove from the boat all-in. I was stunned how heavy the plywood core doors are on our boat, it's pretty tempting to rip them out and replace with something lighter. What kind of foam or material are you planning to use for the new furniture?
E-glass cloth and PVC foam core for replacing timber furniture and floors. We estimate the weight saving in replacing floors would be about 100kg. We heard from someone who replaced the furniture in his Catana42 with composites and said he took out a tonne.
Shayne must be exhausted, because Anna has to almost use a winch handle on him to get him to speak on-camera. 😜 I cannot imagine you and the boys are too thrilled about all this work, but you are going to make all of your YT followers very happy to watch this complete refit. I heard Harry mention replacing the woodwork with foam and glass, but I assume we will get to see more CF work on the new rudder(s) and maybe bulkheads? Have you decided on glass or CF for repairing that crack in the bilge sole?
🤣🤣 Shayne is built for UA-cam 😜 Lucky Harry loves talking! Yup mostly foam and glass. Crack in hull was fixed with polyester resin and fibreglass - it's what the rest of the hull is made from. We do have a few cool carbon-y mods we're going to add but replacing most of internal furniture/floors will be foam and glass.
Dang, crew, gonna be like a brand new boat when you're finished, should be a fair few kgs lighter too. Already the fastest Catana 42, now it's going to be the lightest and best to windward. Any chance of a spare traveller track and cars kicking around the yard?
The look from Shayne as the enormity of the task hit him really rang true to me. I am long past being surprised by the extra work I can find when I start doing some boat work. Maybe a nice rolled stippled finish inside would be good - fairing inside that thing is going to take many hundreds of hours if done to super high standards. Please just get a really good skim filler coat on, get nice coves between the skim coatr on the walls and then put on a stippled rolled epoxy thick coating. I did that inside and it hides many sins. Start with the lockers. What about putting a full height bulkhead in the bows? I have that on my 38 footer and love it. No water comes in the boat from wet kites, fenders, body boards, sailboard stuff and all the other goodies that we have when living aboard. I really recommend having a full watertight bulkhead from about 3 metres in front of the main strength bulkhead. It provides excellent collision protection, capsize flotation, truly excellent wet storage, and you lose an almost useless bunk which always gets covered with stuff. Ours has dinghy hatches in it so that we can open the forehatch and get airflow too. Love mine, consider it for better wet storage, no water down below and more safety. Good luck on the project. Hats off to you.
You guys rock... have so much respect for what you are doing to Paikea whilst running a full time work - kids program !!! Admirable. How long time are you going to stay in Barelona for? Might pop by to invite you for a deserved beer in the sun as I happen to live in Spain (Gibraltar corner).
@@youngbarnacles Let me know and it would be my pleasure to meet up. Also if you need supplies, a car to do errands or just a local guide I would be happy to help. Can recommend Alcaidesa Marina right next to Gib for a stopover or where we are based just across in Algeciras.
Next time try printing those out of nylon because epoxy sticks to that better than to plywood. For things that are out in the sun, PCTG and APA are the best.
Big Upgrade on the hard stands. Maybe add a vitamin B complex big fella. It’s emotional work finding issues as you upgrade, especially filming it at the same time. Love your work ❤

Finally, some actually interesting refit 🎉
Wonder how much weight will be saved

Thanks so much and a Merry Christmas to you too 💙 Hoping your boat upgrade goes smoothly and with any luck we'll catch you in the Caribbean in 2026

@@youngbarnacles Yes in Germany, shipping shouldn’t be a Problem.
I will reach out via Instagram 👍
Awesome
@@youngbarnacles I've sent you a message via Instagram.

Wow that’s a big job ! Good thing ya got Harry on the payroll!! Good luck !
You’ve got this Shane. We’re all learning a ton from you. Carry on
We removed our aging Volvo props on our Switch back in Guatemala and replaced with Kiwi Props and have been very happy so far.
Really pleased to see your re fit and keen to hear of the weight savings , I,m just starting on a smaller scale on my cat. good luck with keeping going with both this and the AC work .

Kids might have finished school and left home by the time we've finished 😜😜
really interested in your foam internal build :) make it a very modern boat.

would be interesting to see some of the Americas Cup work Shane is doing.

Ha ha. The NDA I had to sign several years ago with Oracle gave my life and first born child away to Larry Ellison if I disclosed anything.
now the fun part starts, stripping all the plywood!

Wait a second - were those spanners made of steel? Got to get some lighter weight Ti ones! Highest $/kg weight saving probably.
🤣🤣🤣 now don't you go starting that argument Evan! 😉 It's a constant lament from Shayne 😜
@@youngbarnacles The best $/kg we found were (a) inflatable fenders instead of vinyl (b) fiberglass propane tanks.
Check and check. They are both excellent weight savings options. We have both those onboard Paikea too.
