That's exactly what it's like 😜 The Frenchies have some awesome guys on their shore team so it's great to be working with those guys.

I am guessing you cannot insure Paikea through any of the usual suspects (due to all of your modifications). My understanding is proof-of-insurance is required for most marinas and boatyards. How do you handle this? More boat work to look forward to! I hope you will have time to give us the step-by-step of the damage assessment and the repair. Now that you have finally given away which team Shayne is supporting, sorry but I am officially rooting against you. Go Magic! Bring back our Cup! 😁
Generally easy to get a liability-only policy, inexpensively. I would expect the Young’s mods make the boat MORE insurable. But the bigger issue is the boat’s age. Most companies won’t write replacement cost policies for sailboats over about 25 yrs old. It’s getting very hard to find insurance for ocean boats now! Too many hurricane/typhoon wipe out claims in the past decade have pretty much ruined reliable boat insurance.
Ugh! Insurance. What a delight that is😜🙄😅 In short we can insure Paikea with all our modifications. We have an up to date boat survey and as long as the surveyor is happy with Paikea so are the insurance peeps. We always have 3rd party insurance and will sometimes go to full cover depending on where we are. For example in the Caribbean we only had 3rd party insurance as we were told we had to be out of the hurricane zone in summer which we found incredibly restrictive. What happens if a hurricane comes for where you are and you're insurance won't let you leave? The safest place to be during a hurricane is out of its way! The policy seems to change every time we renew and a lot of the time since we are capable of doing 99% of the boat work ourselves we just cover for 3rd party and make sure we have an emergency fund should the worst happen.
dont get me wrong but love these repairs videos more than anything else ;-p

I have just been binge watching the episodes on rebuilding the chainplates, bulkhead reconstruction and the older ones on replacing the longeron and front beam. You do not mention what epoxy product you use. You mention in passing that West 105 is intended for glueing wood. I have used West off and on for years, and had never considered that the Goudeon brothers tuned their epoxy *for their intended use*. So what is a *better* epoxy for use with glass cloth and carbon cloth?
It all depends on where you are in the world.. If you are in the US, Goudeon Brothers have a line called Proset. This is intended as a laminating resin. In Europe I have been using the Sicomin range or there is Gurit's Ampreg. Australia and New Zealand I use ATL composites.

Just seemed strange that he ended up with the French team, but in racing, we've all ended up batting for the 'other side'! Having ended up sailing on both the Hong Kong and the Irish Admiral's Cup teams in the 3 Admiral's Cups I've been on in total I know what that's like! Though something as prestigious and exclusive as the America's Cup is something on a whole other level, which I don't think I was ever good enough for! So well done Shayne!
Was the haul out to fix the hull crack and bottom job. Or is this one of those extra credit projects that pop up on you?
We are hauling out for new antifoul and to start work on the interior while we are based in Barcelona for the America's Cup work. The crack we were already aware of but it needs to be fixed after the way it was placed on the blocks 👍
Can I make asurgestion before reflot mark the lifting & bulkheads points on the hull sides : congrats on 3rd place in the cup
Yes it still has the old lifting points painted on and we will change them when we finally get around to painting Paikea. We know where they should be for the travel lift it's just when we are playing around with placement of blocks that we have to go looking for more bulkheads 😉
