Do you have seeds I can get from you. Gladly pay for them. I'm in Phoenix so what is happening to your plants with the increased heat from global warming recently. Obviously now would be a good time. Have you concluded the liquid smoke and hyrogen peroxide is not needed? I love your systematic, scientific process with alternative ways to compare.
Yes hotter temps are not like by proteas - here in sacramento leucospermums grow better with some shade - for proteas will still use the liquid smoke and hydrogen peroxide as it can't hurt... which seeds are you looking for? Trying to grow them in Phoenix would be very difficult with the extreme heat... even in the shade
Awesome Vid, keep sending more updates.
May i know what type of Bamboo is this?
Phyllostachys vivax. - thanks
This is amazing, I can only imagine how satisfied you must feel with these results. One question, do you let them flower?
no I don't let them flower...
hello i’m curious, did you achieve the 4 foot leaves?

@@growproteas1148can’t wait!!
A very enjoyable video. It might help to add a light application of 'Blood and Bone' fertilizer at the beginning of Spring, Summer & Autumn. Seasol is a seaweed tonic that stimulates the roots and growth, it isn't a fertilizer so a fortnightly application doesn't interfere with other fertilizers.. Seasol is an Australian product but I'm sure you would have an equivalent locally.
thanks!
Love what your plants are doing and lots of great info thank you. Just wish you chznge the music yiu choee its annoying and distracting 🤨
Hey I’m so excited I just purchased my first baby villeraonm it’s in a 4 inch pot. Should I take it out of the soil and put it in stagnant moss.
I would leave the roots alone and add sphagnum moss around it in a larger pot
So anthurium can grow in sphagnum moss? Thank you! What if the sphagnum I have have a few branches? Is that bad?
wouldn't worry as some of mine also has small branches
Along with the sawzall, a hammer-drill or demolition hammer (Harbor Freight) will a spade type bit or scrapper type bit can dig down a wide sections on all sides of the plant. Also a Radius Garden 22811 Root Slayer Drain Spade (Amazon description) is a super spade. When applicable, maybe right on the sides of the pots for sale, " WARNING- running/spreading bamboo". Anyone know if Oldhami is biggest none running (clumping) bamboo, grows well in the Sacramento Ca area, have a couple that are 30+ feet, after 8 years 5gal pot has spread only to about 4-5 foot area. Very easy to remove any unwanted new shoots coming up, one did not damage bottom rail of redwood fence growing right under it, just curved/grew to the side and then up. I have split a 5gal Oldhami to make two plants and they are both thriving after 2 years. Trying to grow 4 Oldhamis in small front yard at the four corners. When tall enough planning to bring them together with rope near the tops as a type of pergola/teepee like yard art.
Hello! Hope you see this message. I recently got a queen anthurium, couple of inches tall like you had initially. I wanted to transfer it to moss like you have. Did you have it in moss right from the beginning? I also live in Sacramento so it’s nice to follow somebody’s advice that lives in the same conditions.
hello - when i got the plant it was not in moss - when i moved it to a larger pot i put it in moss but left the roots in the original mix so as not to disturb them.
silverhillseeds.co.za/ this is where i bought most of my seeds - I add the iron sulfate twice a year and also if I see any yellowing of the leaves
I tried buying seed from Australia but they would not ship to the US? What is the name of the South African comapy you got seed from? Great tip on the yellowing and using the soild acidifier plus ingredients like iron. Do you do it on a schedule or just as needed?
Omg thank you for this video. Just scored the only leucospermum parksonii from Plant Foundry a week ago and trying to figure out how to remove stupid quackgrass before planting it. What are you using in the mound? PF said dig hole 3x wider than plant and fill mix of succulent soil mix w pumice, but when I watched Builders SA video, they recommended pine bark nuggets 50% river sand 50%. Would i build a mound with top soil from HD and make the hole fill that 50-50 mix? So many questions… does Sac have a club for ppl into these plants?
In Sacramento beside drainage - the big problem is heat - I would plant in an area that gets shade after 1-2pm (my best plants grow in afternoon shade) - If your mound is as big as the one in the video then I would just use topsoil. If it drains too much then it will dry out in the Sacramento heat. Your other option is building a 3 x 3 raised bed for your plant out of redwood that is 8-12inches tall.
@@growproteas1148Thank you, that’s really useful to know. I think I am going to put a mound in my backyard between the shade of an orange tree and laurel; there’s an area where shade is dappled. How much direct sun do you find they tolerate? What minimum sun exposure?
@@jenjasper some plants can handle full sun and some will die in the heat - seems unpredictable - but you will have a better chance with afternoon shade - if they can get 4 hours of sunlight and then dappled light - that would be good. I have some growing with only 2-3 hours of direct sunlight
What hardware store in Australia did you buy the Scotts osmocote?
@@roytate3889 that was years ago... don't remember. I would use compost...
@@growproteas1148 Figued that but unsure if it has a fertizer in it like an aged horse manure as well? Love you videos. I learn so much. Found some good contacts near San Diego to buy some of the Australian Proteas. Bought four Grevilleas grafted onto Grevillea Robust which does great here in the Sonoran Desert with our clay/alkaline soil in the heat.15 gallon. This global warming is stressing and killing many things. 105 today. So you build a landscape of berms so I would guess you have drainage issues as well? I read it has to raise the plant at least 2 feet if ungrafted? Of course in Australia you can buy grafted banksia. Any South Africa ones you think could do OK in the desert? Hearing in SoCal banksia trees are dying in the heat? Bought some Isopogon seed. Have you germinated that protea?
@@roytate3889 hello - I wouldn't use any animal manure - just plant compost is the best - I've used alfalfa meal with good results as it is low in phosphorus - I've had proteas grow well in the shade here in Sacramento - thriving even with 116 temps 2 years ago - so that is something you could do - morning sun - shade after 12 noon - raised beds of 2 feet are excellent for banksia and proteas - don't have any specific plants to recommend... good luck!

Does the Obesum tend to flower more than the Arabicum?
yes... Arabicum rarely flowers - maybe 1-2 flowers the whole summer while Obesum flowers profusely
I live in Redding and just ordered my first 2 anthuriums and can’t wait to try your methods! Also I keep most of my plants in a south/west facing window and get very afternoon bright light. Would you think they will love it or should I need to filter the sunlight?

The video would be more helpful if you disclosed where it is. Bamboo will freeze of course, so presumably you are in southern Florida or possibly Hawaii or southern California. Viewers should know that for bamboo to be used in construction it must be cured and treated to resist termites as well as fungal infestations, mold and rot. In construction it cannot com in contact with the ground or it will rot, so poles must be set in concrete footings or the like. So, fencing is impractical. Your bamboo actually looks a bit like guadua, (guadua angustifolia) a type of Giant bamboo used for construction and grown chiefly in Colombia, although plantations are sprouting up in the Philippines, Indonesia and Africa. It is used in construction for low-cost housing as well as for resorts. Guadua is a thorny species of bamboo, however, and yours shows no thorns. You can see more about guadua and bamboo construction simply by googling it.
I'm in sacramento ca - I does freeze here in the winter occasionally - down to 26. Turns out to be Vivax bamboo
I always thought we were supposed to soften the medium and loosen up the roots prior to repotting, but if this way works, it'll be so much easier for me to repot going forward.
yes - I don't want to damage the roots - so I just pop it in a bigger pot
@@growproteas1148 Would you say this pot sizing up approach works with other plants like Monsteras and Philodendrons?
@@andylise08 yes - most people won't grow beyond 5-6 gallon pots
