  • This video goes over all the steps I took to grow a leucospermum catherine from seed to a beautiful mature plant over the past 5 years. I go back in time and pull out the archives of all the steps I took: germination of the protea seed, hydrogen peroxide, smoke water, potting mix, fertilizer for proteas, how to acidify the soil, when to move your plant to a bigger pot.

    Love your videos and would love to see more of them. How are all your plants going? I've just planted a few proteas, leucospermums, leucodendrons and banksias in my garden. Fingers crossed that they grow well

    I am really impressed by your dedication to growing these Protea plants and sharing your enthusiasm and experience with other people wanting to grow these unusual plants. This to the extent that based on your sharing of information I have purchased a few different Protea plants and will try to grow them also.Can you share the name of the hardware store that sent you the Native Garden Osmocote? I will try to order it from them . Are there any restrictions in California? I live in Rancho Palos Verdes. Graduated from U. C. Davis.Sincerely , Rubaloff

      Sorry I don't remember where I bought it... but honestly I do not recommend it... just use compost ( best) or blood meal, kelp meal, alfalfa meal...

    I enjoy all your videos, have you thought of doing a video on the different diseases or issues you may have had with growing protea?

    • @growproteas1148
      @growproteas1148  3 роки тому

      thanks for the comment - I really haven't had any disease issues - the only issue is poor drainage and root death - which i have covered in some previous videos...

    Amazing result! Congratulations!! I have a question, do you pinch the seedlings or do you only trim when the plant is mature?

      This plant I did not pinch... but I have with other plants with good results.

    How often do you water it? I was told to water it every 2 weeks when I bought it which is what I did for the first week and a half and it started dropping. I have been watering it every 3-4 days for a week now and it hasn’t come back. It’s in a pot in full sun. Any suggestions? Should I try soaking it? Thanks.

      Potted plants need a lot of water! They depend on you since they are not in the ground - so i water this plant in the pot everyday if it is over 100 degrees, every 2 days if 90-100, and less than 90 then about every 3 days.

      Check out Ausachica nursery, Obra Verde Growers (call-by appt only), and Resendiz Brothers. The latter sells plants at Old Town Temecula farmer’s market or you can call and order plants for pickup at their location or the farmers market. Starting to see them show up at Home Depot too.

    My proteas turn yellow. What fertilizer can I use to make it green again?

    • @growproteas1148
      @growproteas1148  2 роки тому

      Is it in a pot or in the ground? Either way yellow means lack of iron - iron sulfate is what it needs as Ironite or another product. There are many on amazon - I would apply weekly until the leaves turn green. Also if the plant is in a pot you can add compost as a fertilizer.
