I’d never seen Insanity Fight until now, and will be digging that out soon for a play. Looks good. 👍 Don’t you just hate it when the floppy makes that “cutting through a log wrapped in chains with a hacksaw” sound? I get nervous when that happens often imagining the worst. 😅 Oh and as for Wizball, annoying AF now, but strangely back in the day I had it completely mastered on the Spectrum. Can’t do squat on it now before (like yourself) giving it the one finger salute. 🤣
Pleased to see they worked matey... Nice one 😀
The sounds of opening and loading a cassette game. 1980s UK computer geek ASMR. 🤣🤣🤣
Ironically it was just me being lazy with my intro but prime seem to like it 🤣
Oooh, that loading sound from the drive is hugely nostalgic. As I'm almost certain I've mentioned before I had the cartoon pack, lemmings, Bart Simpson, captain planet and something I can't recall. Shame about mercenary, I totally agree about wizball 😂.
You know how you "hate that egg"? That's me with wizball that is. "I hate that ball!!!"
Bringing back so many memories. I still have my old 48k Speccy from xmas 1982. Need a powerpack though to see if it still works. Thanks Chris.
Love seeing these working. Wizball……always wanted to love it, we had the Speccy version but it just never clicked.
It's meant to be a really good game as say those who master it. I think the key is in the upgrades as they improve control as you progress.
You should check out Rob Smith (Dev)'s crazy disk cleaning machine.
I think I shall.
I wonder if the car looks like that from behind in order to work with/around the colour clash thing? There is definitely something going on there graphics wise to ensure the colours are all in the right place. It is a very un-Spectrum looking car....if that makes sense. Makes me wonder if the game wasn't a result of working out how to draw that car in that way.
A decent result, but isn't it always the way that the one game that "could" let you down is the most wanted 🤦♂️
It is indeed always the way. Maybe usage is a factor? Hence why the crap games still work? Dunno.
Too bad about the mold on your favorite. Is ipa the way to clean it?
IPA is indeed meant to be the way. Update next week ;)
Amazing these Disks still work all these years later. I use fs-uea to play Amiga games, loved the Artworks on the Disk covers.
Yeah I'm a big fan of the boxes but I also happily use other means to play the games, including emulation. More details next week ;)
I have a set of the tenstar I have never checked. I am not hopeful. At least I have the cases and manuals.
Gutted mercenary was also my favourite. Not initially, but having played all the other games to death, mercenary was reluctantly put into the drive, and ended up being absolutely fantastic. Terrorpods, still have no clue how to play it. 😂
I was exactly the same with mercenary mate. Didn't like it at first and ended up loving it. Terrapods I recall I did figure it out a bit back in the day but it's all gone again now.
Me and my older brother got that compilation of TEN STAR PACK, when we got our first Amiga 500 (STARTER KIT) for christmas 🎁🎄🎅 back in the late 1980's. I got these Amiga games: - THUNDERCATS - BUGGY BOY - THE ART OF CHESS - INSANITY FIGHT - TERRORPODS And my brother got these games: - AMEGAS - BARBARIAN: THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR - IKARI WARRIORS - MERCENARY / THE SECOND CITY - WIZBALL What a great retrospective childhood christmas 🎁🎄🎅 😺👍🕹️. I still have THUNDERCATS, TERRORPODS and WIZBALL for my Amiga 500 😺👍🕹️. A big retrospective like 👍🕹️ from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.
Awesome thanks for sharing your memories again. Love it.
It seems your brother got all the best games... except for Buggy Boy!
02:19, I've been so clicker-trained: just hearing that floppy drive sound makes my head go "uhh, good things are coming 🤩"
Yes indeed. It's like a vintage grandfather clock. Ticking away as the heartbeat of the home.
Never played this back in the day... I did love the cheap budget titles though matey.
Great pocket money sponges :D
Thanks @ThePillock for supplying this game.
I can't remember if this was one of the batch of games I sent, but if it was I likely paid more than the £2 or £3 you estimated, purely based on the cover art and being a car-mad kid who was deprived of a 16 bit machine (sob!) until a bit later in life. I'd have snapped it up long before it went budget. I remember having the game in my Posso box of cassettes, but do not remember much of the gameplay which definitely suggests I played it once and then regretted my pocket money spending decisions.
It may well have been one of the ones you sent actually. I'd need to check the pickup video. But slight correction mate: This, like most Codemasters games were ONLY budget. They were never released at "full price". That was kind of the point. Code Masters smashed out hundreds of quick games, and sold them cheap enough for people to not care.
I just checked my spreadsheet and you did indeed donate this game mate. Thanks so much. Sorry I didn't mention it. Added to the description ;)
@@005AGIMA Aaaah OK, I remember being really disappointed with some late Codemasters games thinking I'd paid a lot for them but clearly I was already being tight with money at that age 😂 Really glad to see those games getting more use than they would have done in my loft!
I bought this, the graphics looked good and the game looked promising....no reviews to check back then. I was very disappointed, especially with the speed the thing moved at.
haha I always went in to budget games with low expectations :D
Looks like the car from the amiga version of outrun Great vid mate never played this one before
Yeah the wrong car 🤣
@@005AGIMA lol
I wondered how feasible it would be to do a vector-based racer on the Spectrum rather than sprite-based. Obviously Ian Dunlop had the same idea back in 1989! With vectors, the scaling is smoother and you can fit much more in memory. As you mentioned the frame rate is at least comparable to Outrun, and I suspect that with more work it could be improved further.
Yep and to be fair, you get more of a sense of continuity in the 3D space.
the irony is the testarossa is a V12...
Exactly. Well a flat 12 anyway. Forgot to mention that but it's in the video description. It's a major floor with that load screen for any petrol head.
Try the Amstrad version.
Yeah nah 😁. Don't have one and zero nostalgia for them, and the Porsche needs a new fuel tank 🤣
@@005AGIMA Tribal English
@@TechRyze 🤣haha no not tribal at all. My collection is systems I have nostalgia for (with a little wiggle room) and I refuse to get sucked in to buying many other systems :D Not what I'm here for :D
That loading sound is from hell
That is the sound of angels singing.
That hypnotic drone sound reminds me of street rod
It reminds me of many 8 bit driving games 🤣
Never seen that actually running... I think it looks ok👍
Not bad for a codemasters game.
How bad was Outrun on the Spectrum?
The sprite representation was actually fanatic, as were the levels. But the result was a very poor frame rate.
Guilty pleasures. I have a few myself. Not just games but also in film and music.
Sharktopus.
Firstly, CLEAN THAT CASSETTE BOX 😂. Recall buying this from boots many many years ago. I had the same thoughts, not a great game but one I went back to. Not sure why.
Because it goes Vroom
Those clouds are straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey!
🤣
most of my games where £1.99 I looked forward mostly to the music from the games.
Same mate. Mostly budget titles.
Is that Lotto written on your hand? Just to remind you to enter perhaps? I owned a speccy and enjoyed these types of game too. BTW I just moved from UK to Aus and its rare to see Spectrum content down under!
Yeah mate lotto during that big one. I didn't win 🤣. Yeah speccy is very rare in Aus but occasionally games do come up. I get most of my spectrum stuff on UK visits.
ASMR intro <3 The game looks... well :D I have a lot of games I love that I doubt anyone with no nostalgia for would be able to enjoy!
Yeah that is a big part of it.
I assume this is a 128k game from the title audio/speech? Although the box also says 48k? Interesting.
Yeah not really sure how that works.
Might just have specific AY-3-8912 audio code in the loader. Whether it uses more than 48KB I'm unsure. Many 64KB Amstrad Codemasters games included speech.
So ASMR!
Thanks :) Glad you found it relaxing.
Chris, you’re crazy! 😂 Still, we all have our guilty pleasures. I like a Frazzles sandwich myself…
Frazzles in a Sandwich sounds AMAZING! I used to put all sorts of things in sandwiches ....basically whatever we could find in the cupboard, all in a multidecker sandwhich.
@@005AGIMA Sandwiches were always more fun as a kid. Glass of strawberry nesquik, a Frazzles sandwich, followed by a Jacobs Club Orange and then zoom all over the place sugar hyped to the max. 🙂
@@herdarkshadow834 never liked club orange or any orange flavoured chocolate.... But the mint....❤️
@@005AGIMA Mint chocolate chip ice cream ☺️
The cover art looks promising 😸😺👍, but the game seems complicated 😹🕹️. On the plus side, CodeMasters brought some great games for the Commodore 64 and Amiga 😺👍🕹️. A big retrospective like 👍🕹️ from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.
Haha yes that sums it up. Thanks for watching.
C64 Richer colours and no colour clash? The C64 had 16 flavours as diahrea to choose from when designing sprites, where the Speccy had Red, Blue, Cyan, Green, Yellow, Magenta and White, REAL COLOURS, with half-bright variations as bonus. The C64 had its own form of colour clash: a big muddy chroma bleed in composite, mixed with jailbars: the worst display output from any computer. And don't make jokes about that ZX80. It has a pretty case design, where the C64 is again, a boring looking piece of diahrea coloured plastic, with the most impossible key placement and a selection of ports that ignored every standard. Sure they were actual switches with full size caps, but somehow it did not help to get on screen what you had in mind. Shift did not deliver the caps you expected, and if you touched the wrong shift, you got your text in diahrea on purple instead of purple on purple. YAY! The C64 was a good game machine for money in 1983 until the CPC and NES arrived, today it is a bad game machine. The C64 always was a bad computer for small office work and coding, the C128 was supposed to correct that, but it was too little too late and people still used it 99% as game machine, so the office work did not took off on the C128 either, which was not helped by the fact that the 80 character mode of the C128 only worked half decent with the expensive Commodore 1084 screen. So yeah, the C64 is both crap and shit.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Amiga Switchless Boot Drive Selector look that badboy up no hot iron needed! Great Video
Has that game cartridge been tested in a known working system ? The cartridge could be the bad part here !
Yes it works in Shane's mega drive
That's a bugger.....I was convinced you'd fix it.
Retro Game On will fix it I'm sure. I'll be watching his channel to follow the story.
WD40 can damage plastics, it would be safer to use IPA. Put IPA on a game cart's contact, then insert, remove and insert a number of times. Do you have any other games to test than that 8 in 1 fake Chinese cart? Also, depending on the model num of the Genesis, it may have the protection (TMS) in place. If the model is in line with one that should have it and it's still black screening with a legitimate cart (which is clean and tested working good by someone), but your console doesn't even reach the TMS screen... then it's down to multi meter usage to track the flow of signals more thoroughly. When I had a failing Mega Drive that wouldn't read games and it was one of the TMS models, it would at least show the TMS copyright warning before black screening. Hope you figure out what the problem is either way.
Thanks mate. The cartridge works on Shane's mega drive but I do need to get another normal cart for sure. Re the WD40, I'm sure you spotted this but I'm case you didn't, it's not WD40 the product (which is a cleaner and lubricant). This is WD40 branded contact cleaner. The same as is used to clean contacts in engine bays, which, are in plastics. It's a cleaner that evaporates, designed for electrical contacts. It in fact says on the front of the can "for use on electrical equipment, contacts, most plastics, & rubbers. ". You may be correct still, but I'd argue age does more damage than contact cleaner.
@@005AGIMA I did read into that one too and one of the posts said: "WD40 Specialist contact cleaner: cleaner/degreaser only, hydrocarbon (heptane) + isopropyl alcohol, no protectant or lube. Can dissolve some plastics. Will remove any existing lubrication, so not suitable for use on pots or controls." Ofc I suppose it comes down to a matter of trust, but I personally read enough to not want to risk any WD product near plastics in my retro consoles.
@@ReinMixTape yep fair enough. To be fair I had already cleaned with Iso in the previous vids :)
Have you tried shaking them and shouting?
I forget to try that. I did however try turning them off and on again several times in a row really fast in a very angry manner.
I'm glad that you finally have taken the solder iron out! Practice makes soldering master 😊
Wise words 😁
These things can a bit of a work in progress.
Someone else can work and progress now 😁
Have you noticed spectrum and other eight bit games coming down in price in the last year or two?
No oddly I've noticed Spectrum games going up....well they are when I'm trying to buy them anyway 🤣
@@005AGIMA oh right, I was able to pick up loads on the Facebook groups very cheaply. Valhalla for example I got for a few quid because the box was a bit shabby.
So, the conclusion is that you've handed Mad Max over to someone whose instinct isn't to take a hammer and chisel to a PCB 🤔🤣 I'll check in with Retro Game On to see how it fares now 😎👍
I think you're confusing him with another Aussie UA-camr....but probably still yes :D
@005AGIMA nope, I just assume all Aussies (or fake Aussies 🤣) are of the F it and find out mentality 😉
BUGGA ! Good effort though 👏.
BUGGA indeed :D Retro Game On will get them working I'm sure :D
Thanks Chris, this is the sort of trash to treasure I can relate to, all that effort and you ended up with two busted megadrives even after you bought a new toothbrush to fix them! At least you ended up in the Pub, keep up the good work
Always clean your teeth before going to the pub. That's my advice :D Maybe not with contact cleaner though?
As an engineer I’ve had quite a few laptops arrive in plastic bags full of dismantled parts, the victims of internet and UA-cam ‘guides to easy fixes’ and general misinformation. So does this mean you’re now on the hunt for a third Megadrive? 😉
@@herdarkshadow834 No I think we can get Furiosa working.....maybe.
G7200 g7400 the Voice more magnavox than Philips Golf is a must just to see the golfer go mental when he goes out of bounds or hits a tree. The original box was a lift off 2 part box. The original controllers which were black & silver were far far better as they didn't have the little grooves like the black ones( obviously wear & tear was an issue) My dad worked for Polygram records/ Philips & use to get to go to the Philips staff shop to choose games after the initial Xmas present. It was superior in everyday compared to atari atari however had far more games.
Thanks I thought I was correct re my memories of the box. That's what we had, the lift off box. We also had full black controllers like these ones though. So I have more nostalgia for the ones shown here :)
