    You are more than welcome mate, you known how much opening seald games makes me smile. Its not to upset anyone but that feeling knowing you are the first ever person to load and play that tape from when it left the factory 40 years ago. Nice seeing you so happy mate but have to say not a game i will play lol

      Thanks again mate. Opening and struggling to load a perfectly new copy was the perfect way to tell my story I think. it replicates exactly the struggle I had when this game was brand new. It wouldn't have been possible without you mate.

      Thanks for the kind words mate. Very timely as I just had someone on a FB group accusing me of taking my viewers for mugs and stretching the video out to please UA-cam, which I do not do.
      A single comment like that makes me question why I do tell the stories and not just show the game like many others.....but a positive comment like your own brings the focus back. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

      @005AGIMA of course mate ! Plenty of other tubers out there that just stream games. ( booringgggg ) . You bring a "real time" perspective on what it's like to try load games and the like showing all the ups and downs time spent and struggles of retro gaming . So tonight when I try to load Green Baret on tape on my Amstrad and scream when it doesn't work I know I'm in good company lol.

    Found myself cheering on the old tape loading sequences, that it would work and I could clap/punch the air in victory....but it all came good in the end.

    Hi Chris. I felt your pain. My copy of Rampage used to be a git to load. It would always get right to the end and fail. Me and my mates would go to my house at school lunchtimes to play it so I would get up early to load it before school. Some days I would be screaming at my tape deck for the flippin thing to work as I was running out of time. Nostalgia I don't miss lol.

    Yeah, damn right, those games were made to be enjoyed so opening a NOS copy is good, great and fine I think. Also it is great to see other people struggling and succeeding with same kind of things that I (and undoubtedly many others) am. One great pat of this hobby is to right these age-old wrongs :-)

    • @005AGIMA
      @005AGIMA  4 місяці тому +1

      haha yeah. The struggle was real. Funny enough I've tried to use apps on my phone to load tape images, but they fail on the spectrum also. They're rock solid on the Acorn Electron though. The Spectrum needs tons more gain.

      Not bad for the day at all hey. The grid does make it feel like I'm strafing sideways not turning, but I'll forgive it that. It's very fast, which is what I recall the magazines praising.

      Emotional reading a simple comment like that. That's the very reason I do this. The memories of those carefree times. Glad I could take you back.

  • @a500
    @a500 4 місяці тому +1

    Ahh man, those memories, welcome to one of my most favourite 8bit games, it was a bit slower on the humble CPC. But boy did I love it. Might be responsible for some very rushed and poor homework, who am I trying to kid, scrub “might be”.
    It’s a surprisingly deep game. You can fly closer to the ground to limit detection. And having completed your primary mission you can then take out other ground sites before returning to land and that made it easier as the game progressed because there were fewer enemies.

    • @005AGIMA
      @005AGIMA  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah I need to read the manual now :D I suspect I was meant to access the computer to find the ground targets. But I just wanted to finally fly around after all this time lol. But this is what I love about Spectrum games. Some on the surface are a bit "meh", but scratch deeper and there is hours of entertainment to be had. Examples that spring to mind include Turbo Esprit, Park Patrol, and Raid of Moscow.

  • @zensibleone2295

    Ah the memories of load errors and the worry that the game you bought you mightn't even be able to play.
    I think the last game that I had to return was Spore on the PC. That hurt. Years of anticipation, 2 copies of the game that the DRM failed to install. And it got to hurt me again when i got it years later on Steam and it's quite an average game at times.

    Been looking forward to this since it popped up, huge fan of A.T.F.
    played it for hours, fairly sure I completed it.
    Oooh that tape sounds rough.
    Bet I haven't seen this running since I was about 14 or 15.
    Vaguely from memory you have to select enemy bases and take them out, think you had to sort of line yourself up using the map.
    It's been a looooong time though.
    Both copies loaded 🤣😂

    You’d never have got to see our manager as he locked himself in his office with a bottle of whiskey everyday.
    If I’d been on duty I’d have just swapped it out for another copy.
    Have to admit part of the appeal of moving to Commodore from Sinclair was the C2N dedicated cassette deck. Never had a failed load on either the VIC20 or C64. Even today I’ve never had a cassette fail to load. Now, cartridges on the other hand… got a stack of those that don’t work.
    Happy flying. 🙂

    • @005AGIMA
      @005AGIMA  4 місяці тому +1

      haha sounds like my kind of manager. I do recall they didn't have another copy. What I also now think is he said I could have a trade, but not a refund, and they had nothing I wanted to trade for at the same price. So we ended up going to Tonbridge in the end and I traded it for....well....that's another story I'll tell when I get my hands on a copy of the game I traded it for ;)

    Great video Chris, thanks for sharing! As my brother said, I also love seeing the real struggles loading the games and hearing the back stories behind why you buy the games. Can I ask why you don’t just use the Sony $10 stereo from the start? lol 😅.

    • @005AGIMA
      @005AGIMA  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah I only recently got the shoe-box player (also a Sony) and it's been fine until this test. Given it's more similar to the style I used back in the day, it's my preference. I really thought I could at last pass on the mini-stack but it seems not lol.

    At one point there, whilst you was having trouble loading, I was thinking you might have to rename to Trying To Play More In 2024!
    Come back to This Week In Retro Chris. Now I have to put up with some bloke for whom half of his videos show him cleaning old computers and this Scottish bloke who pronounces some words weirdly! Just kidding Neil and Dave. Love you all.

      Yeah I do have a Mitsui with tone controls but it's got other issues and chews tapes when you're not looking lol. That's the one thing with this Sony showbox....no tone controls :(

    No wonder people turned to piracy, can't have been as much of a palava as that to load the pirated copies. ATF looks great for the limitations of the time.

    • @005AGIMA
      @005AGIMA  4 місяці тому +1

      Well pirated cassettes were just dubbed from the original, so often they were even harder to get to load. Of course this was late in the Spectrum's life (1988) so the reality is, it was the tape deck aging that probably made it such a pain to load. Similar to what we've seen here in the video, this game "needs" a good tape deck. I'd assume +2 owners didn't feel the same pain as the integrated deck was a lot less troublesome than an external one.

  • @proteque
    @proteque 4 місяці тому +1

    I only experienced tape on C64 and never had this kind of problems. But then again only had decks made for it, so that could have made life easier :) . Is it a spectrum problem in general this? or just the +3?

    • @005AGIMA
      @005AGIMA  4 місяці тому +1

      I recall my mates with a 48k rubber key spectrum often having load fails. But keep in mind, back then, the quality of the external deck wasn't guaranteed. I think most Spectrum owners if they're honest ran into plenty of errors and I think that's reflected in the comments here. But the +2 had an integrated deck which was much more reliable. And the +3 using disk, was the most reliable and fastest. But disk games were limited and over priced, and hence more +3 owners, like myself, had more tapes than disks, and used an external deck.

    • @proteque
      @proteque 4 місяці тому +1

      All part of the charm now, but sounds frustrating back then.

  • @preferredimage
    @preferredimage 4 місяці тому +1

    That sounds dull like the heads need adjusting. and those bars should be about evenly sized cyan / red....

    • @005AGIMA
      @005AGIMA  4 місяці тому

      Yeah oddly the time it loaded, the red and cyan were not even. I think I'll give that deck a good clean as it is creaky regardless of what tape is in it. I suspect it needs a clean and regrease, and possibly new belt.
