What a great video and I agree it was a bit of an emotional watch! I had this exact game when I was that age too, I have vivid memories of playing it while visiting my grandparents' house, the adults would be having their boring serious conversations and I'd be tucked away in a comfy corner somewhere killing time on Donkey Kong. I haven't thought about it in years but this video unlocked those memories!

Nice memories there. Did they ever tell you to "turn that beeping thing off?" lol. I seem to recall there's a way to play it silently.

@@005AGIMA I do remember on occasion being told to turn it off or move away because it was annoying... so I don't think it could be muted, at least not that I could find? Those annoying adults were always so loud I could barely hear the game over them anyway 😆

Will be getting the wife's DK out this week, get some fresh batteries in and see if it still works. It's CIB with the manuals so really hope it works.

It's funny to explain to people that back then, although we DID have cameras that could take good pictures, generally a lot of us didn't have enough money to snap photos every few seconds like we do today. The roll of film was reasonably expensive, and then there was the fact you would have to wait for the prints before you could even look at what you did (Polaroid did exist but the pictures weren't as good and the shots were even more expensive). So most photos back then were either "posed" or just never taken at all. I don't have any snapshots of me at my C64 or Amiga, so it's great to see a snap of you enjoying this old tech. Oh, and back then, Ford Cortinas were EVERYWHERE, I think every other car on the road was a Cortina.

Yes exactly. I'll share in a future video I think re-living the process of having photos developed lol.

Brilliant picture and it must have been like stepping into a time machine when you first saw it again.

It was indeed. First time I looked at it I didn't even notice the DK. It was after I scanned it in with some other photos and saw it on the screen that I was like "Oh wow! WOW!"

Chris, what a beautifully emotional video. Your photo of the East of England Show Ground brought back many memories for me, as my parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents are/were all from Peterborough and would all talk about their experiences at the show ground during their lives. I lived in Peterborough until age 7, before my parents moved to Bristol, but we would return to Peterborough several times a year to visit family. I vividly remember buying Hornby 00 gauge trains and rolling stock from a model railway shop in the town centre with birthday money and seeing Star Wars: A New Hope with my father at the Odeon cinema.

Wow very cool memories. We used to attend an annual camp there. Got to see the speedway for free once also. I did some Youth work for two weeks in Peterborough one year also.

@@005AGIMAI went to the speedway in Peterborough with my uncle (an awesome motor mechanic who was once a formula one motor mechanic). I will always remember the smell of kerosene at the speedway. Awesome memories.

I loved the G&W series, I had Donkey Kong Jr (still do and works perfectly). I can still remember going into H Samuel (or a similar jeweller, it seems bizarre that that was where these were sold back then!) and picking it out as my Christmas present from the glass cabinet. I did start collecting some more in the late 90s but sold them all about a decade ago bar my original one. Great video anyway cheers

Ahh, we were a Ford Escort, static caravan in Devon and a CGL Galaxy Invader family. Game and Watch were for the rich kids back then. 😉
I was into cameras and photography from an early age and although I have a lot of photographs of me with the cameras in shot, there aren’t many of me with computers in shot.
I did find one that must have been taken in 1993 as I’m changing for a night out, or a gig as it is a slinky black velvet number, and there beside a bottle of vodka is my Amiga 1200 and a Sony Trinitron TV. Not a photo I’m going to publish but it was nice to see the snowy white Amiga when I rediscovered it.
Can’t remember who took it as I was quite the exhibitionist in my youth which comes with sharing tiny rooms on tour with the boys in the band. I always had cameras lying around back then so people often used to just pick them up and click. Lots of Minolta SLRs which I still have in their period flight cases. To be truthful I took more care of the cameras than I did of the synths or computers.
Got photos of many of my cameras, got photos of all my synths (insurance), got photos of my early cars but this is the only photo I have with any of my early computers and only then by accident of proximity.

oh wow! You have done some very good work in the planning and editing here Chris. it shines. Great result as well mate. Makes the personal part of it comes through very well! Cheers!
I had one of these games, but I am unable to remember which one I had. Something in the back of my head say it was a racing game. it's amazing how much joy it gave me but still unable to remember which one I had. Must be because I have seen so much youtube stuff about old computers and games. Great photo you have there. There isn't anything of me doing stuff I cared about. only "stand here in front of this touristy thing" photos.

    • @005AGIMA
      @005AGIMA  2 місяці тому +1

Thanks for the kind words. Ironically the video kind of "landed" this way. The original cut, I felt, had become more about the process of editing the photo, rather than the game and memories. So I chopped it all right back to the bare bones. I much prefer it this way.
