Falcon was expensive, £30 in 1989. I remember it to this day because of the guilt I still feel. My uncle was browsing CDs in a computer shop (yes, they sold CDs in the '80s) and he offered to buy me a game. He assumed I'd reach for the familiar cheap 8bit cassette tapes that lined the lower walls, but no, I reached for the big boxes above. I'd upgraded to an Amiga; I was in the big league. I still recall his wince at the price. He paid and we left the shop in silence... £30 was probably a day's wage for a painter and decorator in 1989. That was the last time we went shopping together.
Man what an awesome story. Thanks for sharing. I recall it wasn't cheap, which is why I left it on the shelf in Boots for so long. I can't recall if it was eventually discounted, or if I just brought it when I had access to more money. I'd argue it was worth the wait, but even though I lived for flight sims, I found it possibly the hardest to master. I'd argue landing is a tad easier than F16 Combat Pilot though.
i'm glad you got it out of easy mode, this is one of those games where "easy mode" is actually harder, and less realistic
Yep agreed 100%
Thank you for this trip down memory lane! I remember buying this game from my pocket money back in the day, but unfortunately, I only had a stock A500 when I bought it, and that game _really_ wanted one Mbyte of RAM.
A bit later, I traded almost all my boxed games for an A3000, and _Falcon_ was among the ones I gave away, meaning I never actually played the game it was meant to.
Thanks again for this great video!
Comments like this genuinely give me a smile. It's all about the memories. Thanks for sharing.
Sweet view - takes me back 🤩
With those framerates, only AI needed would be "change directions" to make the computer opponents invincible 😂
Haha true. It's worse on an a500 but you get used to it. One of the reasons why much patients is needed in the turns.
I was more into racing games back then but I’ll give this is a go as it looks good so thanks 👍
No worries. Enjoy. I love both racing and flight sims.
Ah, that takes me back. Played plenty of Falcon.
PULL UP! PULL UP! :D Ah the nightmare returns.
@@005AGIMA 🤣
That intro music was rad
Heavy Metal rendition of "Ride of the Valkyries" can't be wrong :D
That music is so good. We've still got our original ST version. Too complicated for us as teenagers😂
F29 Retaliator was a bit easier to get used to.
Yes F29 was much more forgiving, and more arcade like. I played it non stop during Gulf War 1, as if I was helping in some way lol. But F29....let's just say, so fly too close to ground objects. The hit box was way bigger than the visible object lol.
Very nice vid, u and Mr Computer (another mostly Amiga utuber) seem to be the only few Amiga utubers to be interested in Amiga flight sims, that s a pity because there are some beautiful flight sims and other vehicles simulations for Amiga rarely covered
Neil from RMC is into them as well. And a few others. They crop up in the feed once the algorithm gets what you're into lol. Glad you enjoyed this one.
Falcon was a great jet fighter game and the follow up games (not on the Amiga unfortunately) were fantastic. Unfortunately many of the sims were held back by publishers not specifying higher spec systems (oddly not a problem they had issue with on the PC)
Now to play AV8B Harrier Assault (fantastic if you want depth) :-D
I need to play the later Falcon games. I purchased the pack on GOG. Just yet to jump in.
I must give this a try. That 030 accelerator you have in there seems to do a good job, I have a PiStorm so will be interesting to see the difference.
I think PiStorms can be removed if you want to try it on a real Amiga Andrew......oh ouch :D :P No it would be interesting to compare.
Brilliant game. loved it on my Atari ST
👍
I much prefer that new camera view. I can't really see what's happening on screen on your older videos
I do try and balance making people feel like they're in the room with me, given usually the video is actually about the story, not just the game. But yes I know what you mean. I do try.
Takes me back to playing JetFighter 2 on my 386, it had a similar style. Awesome video - I hope you blow Al out of the sky!!! =)
Ah yes JF 1 and 2 were the spiritual successor to F/A18 Interceptor (same devs). Great sims. :) I think JF2 was the first Flight sime I played on my 386 as well. I'd jumped to PC in the promise of even better flight sims, but then got hooked on X-Wing and Doom lol.
@@005AGIMA Haha same, although I'm sure X-Wing is still allowed to count as a flight sim! And a FIGHT sim if you count the battle to properly configure memory in autoexec.bat/config.sys to get the thing to run as i recall.......
@@mysticgreg haha x-wing taught me all I ever needed to know about Autoexec and config.sys 🤣
That warranty card I think the place is not there no more Chris as I live in Coventry 🤔🤔😂
Oh no lol. No more Warranty 🤣
Also mate, it's a shame you and I never linked this up back in the day. We did with F16 but not this. I think we'd have had more fun with this as the combat is much much closer as you can see here. Oh well. 30 years too late haha.
Yep your wright 30 years to to late 🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
How does it compare to EA F/A18 Interceptor? for overall experience and 'arcade-ness' v 'sim-ness'?
Falcon is 10x the "Sim" than F18. F18 is more accessible. Falcon is quite unforgiving. The upper ranks even affect the physics of the aircraft depending on your loadout. Some of the dropped bombs have to be manually aimed. Landing is a pig too. I personally "prefer" F16 Combat Pilot (also very hard) but Falcon is right up there, and boasted on the back of the box "Due to the unsurpassed realism of FALCON, it has been selected as the basis for a simulator for the military." Not even kidding.
Fairly sure I got this in a compilation with gunship and something else.
You really need to treat yourself to a decent joystick mate.
One day I'll get the quick joy hey fighter again.... And then break it 🤣. You need trigger fire buttons on right Sims as the left hand is busy dancing across the keyboard, so robust joysticks like the zip stick actually don't cut the mustard. Or the MIG.
Guns N Roses!!!!!
Haha correct
So what’s your call sign? 🙂
Pervert1....haha no back in the day I was boring and went with Maverick, because no one else would think of that....honest.
@@005AGIMA Berlin (the group) immediately popped in my head when I read that. That movie had quite the soundtrack.
Good luck Maverick and happy hunting head to head!
@@herdarkshadow834 Funny enough, when I was goading Al on facebook the other night and sending him screenshots of a practice session, my playlist hit "Danger Zone" at that very moment 🤣. Sadly Al is apparently having issues with his setup, so may not be able to practice. Someone will take me on I'm sure.
@@005AGIMA Ha, good ol’ Kenny Loggins. 🙂
Are you sure he’s not pulling the sim racing special where someone says ‘I’ve had no time to practice’ and then blitzes the whole field by over a second in qualifying? 😂
@@herdarkshadow834 The thought had crossed my mind :D
I hate WHDLoad -version amiga games, because they have a lot of bugs or loading errors and etc. 🤔🕹️
Some do I agree. This one was just fine as you can see here :) It even (mostly) stays in sync with the A500 when linked up. Keeping in mind I have an 030 running at 42Mhz, that's impressive.
