- Join me as I unbox and sniff the rear ports of ATARI's "latest" console.
As mentioned, for a quality video on this topic by @danwood_uk (I assume), go here:
• Atari 2600+ Review: At...
EDIT: And a FANTASTIC video has been done by @ctrlaltrees , with a very thorough overview and testing, including testing a CRT and Light Gun among other things.
Rees also give information on the placement on the ports (Wish I'd checked my Vader).
Check it out: • New Atari 2600+ Ultima...
And another video I very much enjoyed was by @SEGAZombie and can be found here:
• The New Atari 2600+ | ...
Thanks for watching.
Hi there Chris, I'm the producer of the Atari 2600+. I've enjoyed watching you and the guys on the TWIR videos for a long time.
I cant believe your keen nose in this video! It really made me laugh because you are right, the plastic is indeed a different formulation. Throughout development of the 2600+ I was never happy with the look of the prototype 2600+ because it always looked too matt and didnt have that semi gloss finish of an original machine, so the plastics guys changed things up and voila I was happy with the finish of the plastic.
So pleased to see at least one person that noticed!
Wow thank you so much for touching base. May I say I love your work. It just feels so.... Original. It truly feels like an original unit, just smaller and with HDMI. I'm over the moon with it. So, it's the plastics that give off the nostalgic smell? Interesting :) thanks again.
@@005AGIMA Cheers, yes indeed, I think you need to realise your super power as your nose homed in near the cartridge slot. Well the faceplate , cartridge slot and lever mechanism are in PC not ABS - done for strength. Thats the diffference. All the best.
@@bencha3341vielen Dank für diese tolle Arbeit. Ich hoffe sie haben damit noch viel vor .Wir hier in Deutschland lieben den 2600+ ....ich danke Ihnen und atari für diesen guten Einfall. P.s. frohes neues Jahr😊
I want to buy it when i can, i have a lot of cartridges, 2x 2600jr, 1x 6 switchs and 2x 4 switchs and a 7800 console but this product is awesome with the HDMI port. I really wish you do the good firmware update in the near future. Sorry for my english.
@@michh9806 The firmware update is good. Fixes the colour issues and button for 2 button games. They've done a good job.
"Atari, by Dior. Smell the past."
I'd buy it :D
Man sniffing electronics for 30min...
UA-cam at its finest.
😜
gotta sniff those ports man!
It smells of 1977 :) Ahhh, nostalgia!
And to think, I was only 3 🤣
i had this model nice to see a new version. pole position, Frogger space Invaders, Jungle hunt great classics.
So much fun. I love returning to the OG of home gaming.
The Atari 2600 Junior was my first console. 🙂
It's a very nice first console too 👍
Smell that nostalgia 😂 im having so much fun with the Atari 2600+ ive been playing Atari carts non stop since its release ❤
I agree its a shame their is no CRT filter, ive had control issues with pole postion 2 i cant get it to acelerate properly even using a 7800 pad, thanks for the mention in video description mate
Mine seems to accelerate fine. Is the button on your controller dodgy?
@@005AGIMA the 7800 pad works fine on the 7800 🤷🏻♂️
You don't need to power off the console to change carts, you can hot plug them 😊
Yeah that's a cool feature too. Doesn't feel as legit. I need to see what that does with the 32 in 1 though as rebooting takes too long lol.
Are we going to see a new series of videos of you smelling stuff😂
For what it's worth, I thought Pole Position 2 looked good👍
Nose-talgia series :D lol. Yeah PP is awesome and now I have a taste for 7800 games. I wonder what a genuine 7800 smells like :D
I will give mine a sniff later on and report back.
I've found the smell had dissipated once out in the open.
@@005AGIMA there is a very subtle hint of an electronic smell to the console and It does remind me of the back in 1983 when I opened up my ZX Spectrum 48K for the first time and it is a smell that stuck with me today and brings back many happy memories of christmas.
Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if it's the flux from soldering. I have done a lot of repairs on old electronics and that old flux has a very specific smell.
Could be :) All I can tell you is that it has dissipated now that the unit has sat out in the open.
Watch Reece's video about the 2600 + A very good and informative video.
Not only did I watch it after making this, I posted it in my community tab last week, and you'll find it mentioned in the description of this video ;) with link ;)
But he didn't sniff it ;) Noob :D
@@005AGIMA Gotta admit that Nostalgia has got to have the smell . Brings back so many memories. Dude can't wait for the Christmas edition of This Week in Retro. You guys are killing it.
Asteroids is not built in in North America.
I later learnt that it was exclusive to pal region machines. Australian units had it built in.
Smells like my iPad.
I thought those smelled of cider 🤣 rotten apples 🤣
I don't like Atari -devices 😂. Today smelling big money 😂
If you don't like ATARI, it's possibly the wrong video to click on 🤣
13:00 You might think everyone who owned and still owns an Atari 7800 were blessed with Asteroids 7800 built-in, but no, that's only for the PAL version of the console, however, in the NTSC region, we got a Pole Position II cartridge included. No wonder why a multi-game Atari 2600 Cartridge was included in this new console.
Yeah I recently learnt that it was a pal only thing. That's kind of cool. Niche. Still wished they'd included it lol 😁
Have you sniffed your Atari today?
🤣🤣🤣 good one 😁
Mine is wrapped up under the Christmas Tree, and yes, I was desperate to get it open before your video, but more so now because I really want to smell that 70s/80s aroma you so fully described 😂
I was beginning to think you're Pole Position 2 was dead, so happy for you when it fired up, and you realised you needed the two button pad.
Two weeks and a couple of days, and I'll experience that gem of a machine 😎👍
I hope yours smells too. Do let me know. Now that mine has been out in the open, the new toy smell is gone :(
@@005AGIMA don't you worry, the smell will very likely be the first thing I comment on thanks to your assessment 😉
brill vid mate my first console was the 2600
amazing the producer has reached out to you
i think you should do more videos smelling various computers could be quite fun lol
keep up the good work mate
Cheers mate. Love the 2600 even though I missed out on owning one. "ATARI" was what we asked for back then. It didn't ask for a games console. We asked for ATARI. ...and now I have too many of them lol.
So tempted by this but still holding back…. Got the original VCS but the convenience of the HDMI is tempting me 😎🍺
The good thing about originals is, they're pretty bullet proof and they're still cheap. For me, the 7800 compatibility was the main selling point on this new unit.
If I remember rightly the 32 in 1 cartridge used a counter chip (I guess to select different addresses in the rom) and a capacitor to change the games, the switching was electrical that way so I would imagine it would work the same for the new 2600+
Yep in theory it's the same. It's a bit of a nightmare to find a specific game but good for a random sesh. ON the 2600+, the extra boot time makes using the 32in1 a bit painful though compared to original kit. But I was doing a full reboot.
in 6 months I will buy and publish a review as well :P Just to be the strange one that release after the hype. BUT the sniff! I do that always! Some kind of greet from the wife: "wth are you watching?" :D
Did miss your trip to the shop as you did with the A500 mini.
fun fact that the internet do not need: I even made an EP/Album called "smell of old electronics" :D
Smell the glove 🤣. Yeah I did go to the shop to get it but didn't film this time. I look forward to your review.
I had the same problem with all 7800 games I need to go out and get a 2 button controller for all of 7800 games to work .
Maybe ATARI will release a 7800 game pad? They've created a need I think.
Great video! is your 2600 pole position the PAL version? cheers
To be honest I assume it's PAL but I don't know for sure. Purchased in Australia which is a PAL region,.
I never got into consoles until 1992 when I saw Sonic on the Megadrive. I was always more computer focused and these things were mucho expensive in the day and did less than a computer could.
Today, I can admire the craftsmanship of the 2600+ but I’m still not into it. If I was going to drop a £100 on a retro leaning living room old skool console I think I’d opt for the Evercade VS. There’s just more variety and appeal for me, plus physical media which I can use in the handheld.
PS I still remember the new smell of the ZX81 and VIC20. 😉
Yeah I must confess I've been very tempted by the evacade. They've done an awesome job.
@@005AGIMA I’ve had the handheld for a year and have to confess the Namco carts have pretty much been a permanent fixture in it. How could I resist Pac-Man and Galaga on the go?
It definitely has a unique smell 😅 think it's the plastic too, enjoying it so far and thanks for the video
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed 😁
