Hi Chris, awesome video for a terrible Amiga port. I loved playing OutRun and Space Harrier in the arcades on Weston-super-Mare seafront with my Speccy mates from school. The multi-coloured, fast moving graphics, and stereo sound were so ahead of anything we had on the ZX Spectrum, and the moving cabinets were like a VR ride. The hardware capabilities of the Amiga promised the potential of near arcade-like ports, but we were often let down by rushed products like this. Strangely, the ZX Spectrum ports of OutRun and Space Harrier are pretty amazing given the limited hardware. Thank goodness for MAME so I can get my arcade fix of OG OutRun and Space Harrier.
I came here for more Chris! We love you from 'This week in Retro' podcast. Also from you own channel which I hope builds further as a fellow Amiga person historically. I think the Lotus games are better for me certainly on the Amiga.

Hi Chris, I don't normally comment on very many YT videos, but just wanted to wish you all the best after hearing your are leaving the TWIR podcast. I don't want to say you were my favourite, but you will be missed. You demeanour and down to earth presentation is just what that podcast needed at the time and I found myself occasionally getting frustrated as I think your voice and/or opinion (at least I sometimes felt) was pushed to back somewhat. No-one's fault, just that the format of the podcast I think possibly is better with 2 voices. I do hope you keep it up here and doing what you do and wish you all the best.
Gotta love the work of Yu ‘Shenmue’ Suzuki and AM2. His later Virtua Racing on the 32X was technically fascinating but when it comes to Sega racing games it was always the later Sega Rally Championship for me both in the Arcade and Home. Used to play for hours with a guy called Adam, sadly no longer with us, and never grew tired of it. I owned Outrun on the C64 though the first home version I ever saw was on a brand new fresh from the box Atari ST that a housemate, Pete, had just bought. I remember being underwhelmed at the time though I can’t particularly remember if it was the machine or game that was the more uninspiring. I was still recovering from my 1986 programming burnout that saw me walk away from all computers for five years. His ST was the first computer I’d touched in three years. Still, Outrun defined the racing genre in 1987 culminating with the superior Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge a few years later. Now that’s a game I still hold dear. Love me an arcade racer but the 1991 release of Formula One Grand Prix changed everything for me. It’s the only reason I bought an Amiga… Cue hordes of angry Amigans whirling tank mice by the tail. Man you should have seen the storm I caused when I said I only bought a PS5 for Gran Turismo 7! Those console wars are still going strong out there!So, yeah, F1GP was genesis for me as a sim racer though I’ve been arcade racing since Taito’s Speed Race in the mid 70s and the B&W 1st generation home console clone my brother owned back in the late 70s.

I've seen the cannonball engine remake but that's targeted at AGA machines. I really want someone to prove what the A500 could have done. Even new spirits and sounds would be half the job done.

I really want that done. Push the amiga to its limits and do a good job. Get some of the old public domain programmers involved. Enhancements for ecs machines as well, using 2 meg chip on my 500+ for example.
@CompuforceWally yes agreed. Lotus engine is close enough to the truth of realistic abilities of ocs, I have a small hack on my channel of a custom track. It's not much but I did do more hacking of colors a partial gfx , but not released. So many good coders out there should of done justice to old ports. They got skills , I'm old slow and dumb and done things that prove anyone can do it code wise....

I dont know why, but I can imagine the voice actor who was sampled, cracking up with laughter after that. Its like they got someone down the pub to do it, and make it as crap as possible.
I suspect the backstory is something like "We were given 5 days to do a game that really needed several months". For me, peak home Outrun is the Sega Saturn.
Latest WHDLoad patch fixes lots of issues of this game like the poor framerate. It wont turn it to Lotus but it turns a mess to actually a playable game.

OUT RUN is still one of my favorite games from my childhood 😸😺👍🕹️. I still have it for my Commodore 64 (tape) and Amiga 500. I also have the original Arcade soundtrack 🎵🎶 on a c-tape. By the way, awesome Amiga mug. 😺👍🕹️
I think the problem for me was that my expectations of what the Amiga version could have been were far higher than the game that was published. Looking at your video, I think I agree that is not a terrible game, but it's just got so many sloppy elements - the music has some slightly janky samples, the viewing angle behind the car is wrong, the colours are wrong, the car is wrong, the weird loading music/voice thing... (I could go on and on). Like others have commented, I always craved the PC Engine version, which in my mind looked SO good in comparison. Great video! Keep up the good work 👍👍🙂
I've never played it on Amiga, so can't compare the ports, but what I remember about Atari ST version is that the best part of the game was listening to banger tunes on intro screen.
I was so disappointed when outrun dropped on the amiga. I knew instinctively the amiga could do better. Loved the arcade version and, us gold did us amiga and st lovers dirty there. Someones got to do a better version. Use the blitter, copper, full chip ram. Paulas capable of banging out better sounds than what we got as well.
I had played the Amiga version of Outrun on Batocera, but I must have turned the sound off, as I didn't hear how bad the intro was until now. Thanks for the warning :)
At least the sprite looked better on the CPC. Visually, it and the spectrum are very faithful ports. The machines just lacked the grunt to make it move 🤣

It's an utterly dreadful port, the fact that when you turn left and right the car sprite mirrors and the driver and passenger swap places makes me rage, technically the speccy port was a far better effort.
I got bitten twice, first time on my Amstrad CPC, then the second time on the Amiga, I knew that I should have waited for review, but it was Outrun. I loved Outrun in the Arcade, and it was the Amiga, how could they screw up the Amiga version. So when it was the game of choice on The Home Computer Club I went for it.
it is very strange how I remember this game. I had fun with it at a friends ST (which I think is pretty much the same game). retried it now as old and grympy and it is horible.

That is a great stereo and suits the Outrun music perfectly! I only had it on the CPC, compared to which this Amiga version is practically arcade perfect!
Yeah I do like this stereo. Haven't had it long. I did like the spectrum version of outrun despite it being slow. The pixel art was a much better effort than the Amiga.
I thought that but the "reflections" are just white. It's still a simple sprite. And even if that were the reason, why change the shape? It's just wrong lol 😁
That loading time is crazy! I always thought it was quicker. I remember the first time I played on an Amiga, was Street Fighter 2. The disk swap was insane. Want a different backdrop, stick a disk in....play...repeat..... great little video. cheers.

I always love reading your story :). F1 was amazing for the day, as was Indy 500. Nothing wrong with 1 game being the reason to buy a system.

Coincidentally there is a WIP for a remake for the Amiga... Still waiting to see if it will do justice!
