Ah, MDK & Riven were pant wettingly exciting back in the day. Throw in Deus Ex a couple of years later and life was complete. Looking forward to next week's update...
@@005AGIMA I think the idea is that you're too absorbed to even get up to go to the loo! Yes, in reality of course that would be a bit sad and smelly..
According to a site I looked at the only PS1 games that won’t work are: Arcade Party Pak, Atari Arcade Greatest Hits, Fighter Maker, Final Fantasy Anthology, International Track and Field, Judge Dredd, Monkey Hero, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Tomba. I had the best results cleaning scratched CEX discs using cotton wool pads (discs) that I also use for skincare. One side is soft the other is more textured. Basically spray isopropyl on the textured side and with firm pressure, using a circular motion spend a few minutes effectively scrubbing the surface. Follow with a polish with a top notch microfibre cloth. I have a 95% success rate using this method. No problems using a UK disc in an Australian PlayStation. I’ve got two PS2 consoles. A black fat and a pink slim. The slim used to live in the bedroom. To be honest I’ve used neither for years. This was the era I fell out of love with games. Sega went down and I felt homeless as a gamer. Although I’d owned all the consoles the fact Sega were gone just made me sad and I ended up using the PC exclusively. I’ve still got copies of Gran Turismo (legend) and V Rally (hmmm) here but the only PS1 game I’ve played in the last five years is Driver. Love that game. Good luck with the PS2. My pickup of the month was a beige 90’s PC with a 17” CRT monitor that was being scrapped. I spotted it on a site visit and it was gifted to me. Saved them a trip to the dump. I know it’s post ‘96 as the motherboard has usb ports but the rest is a mystery in beige. That’s now one of my three winter projects.
Thanks for the research and heads up Lisa. All good info. More of an update next week when I test the other PS2. Great find on your PC. Hope it all goes well.
@@005AGIMA I couldn’t resist the beige box and as I had a spare hour before work I pulled it apart. One stick of ram was faulty, the hard drive was dead and the slot 1 processor needed reseating (and the plastics remained intact). So now I have a slot 1 Pentium II Celeron (sad) 300MHz (ok) MMX (yay) 128mb machine with a perfect 17” monitor. Reckon this one is going to go Windows 95 if the cards allow.
Anything beige. The tip I went to had a beige keyboard. I left it. I regretted it. I went back the next weekend. It was still there. I left it again. I regretted it again. You know what I'll be doing this weekend lol
@@005AGIMA This one came with an IBM badged beige keyboard with no sunburn. Yet to test it but those things were designed to last forever. Happy dumpster diving at the weekend. 🙂
If CD/DVD polishers are considered acceptable for PS Games, they're readily available online. I still have mine from Best Buy (in the States). The unit came with extra polishing wheels, a couple of clothes, & the magic solution, which I believe is mostly Isopropyl Alcohol. I think it was marketed under the name Disc Doctor. It worked wonders with the kid's movie DVDs, & my wife's music CDs, so long as the surface damage doesn't run too deep. Good Luck! :)
While I had a PS1 and PS2 (and later the 3 and the 4), I didn’t mourn when I moved away from the platform given the need to pay for PSN on top of the games and buying the console (old man rant 😆), but watching this video I forgot how much I did enjoy the early PS experience. Oh and yes, MDK, I played it to bits in the Mac back in the day, and seeing you boot it up reminded me of the time I’d sold my Amiga 🤦♂️ to help pay for a Mac. 😱😂 Great video Chris. 👍
Thanks mate and thanks for sharing your memories. I jumped from xbox360 to PS3 when both were new because Xbox you needed to pay to play online and PS3 you didn't at all..... And then Sony followed suit. It was a very very sad day when they did. And yet games like fortnight and war thunder can be played online on PlayStation without PSN sub so how does that work? Makes me so mad.
Yes, there are some PS1 games that have compatibility issues on PS2, and it varies between hardware revisions too. But even those games should still read and start up, so it's likely that your Wing Commander disc is just scratched or dirty.
If I remember correctly the PS2 doesn't have PS1 backward compatibility via hardware, it's emulated. Maybe this is also playing a part with some titles not working.
Would you remmember what kind of ps2 slim you had? Was is ps2 scph-79001 or else? It would let me know it this particular one was only software emulation version as all below scph 75001 were ps1 hardware emulation..
@@Godfamark1 I have no clue as it was a friend. I thought all slims were software emulation? I not have a fat PS2 (see newer video) and that played the games fine :)
@@005AGIMA older verions had physical ps1 IOP cpu, sound cpu and ps1 memory, except the graphics was being emulated.. Thank you for your videos.. :)

Fairly sure unless the discs are heavily scratched it's just a compatibility issue. Treat yourself to a ps1, cheap as chips. Ps1 games are region locked, chipped PlayStations play everything though ☠️. Nice ps2 👍
Please note there is an update on this as part of the pickup shown at the end of this video. Update next week.

Ah thanks Tina. Learning much more about how this backwards compatibility works.
Ehm, I didn't click play I just clicked the thumbnail, can I still claim the thanks?!
haha yes you can.
I think that the games that did not work are because their version is different from the device version, or that the device needs to be cleaned
In a latter video, most of these worked on a PS2 Fat.

Tell your friend he needs to get the coin battery replaced on his PS2. You can tell by the white dot in the middle of the screen 2:20
Ah interesting. I did wonder as I recall 3d columns on the background of the PS2 normally...correct?
@@005AGIMA on the slim model it's a swirling ball on the screen. If it's in one spot that means the battery is dead.

no clue sorry.
Is there a mod chip in that PS2 slim? With some mod chips you need to press the on/off button twice quickly to get it boot PS1 games.
I don't think it's modded, and you'll note it IS booting PS1 games. Just not some of these ;)
