DOS gaming was a battle. Expanded v extended memory, the right port for sound. X Wing was awesome.

Loverly part of the world. I loved seeing the Giants Causeway a few years ago.
I know there are a dozen options for sound in DOS but that sbpro synth is the real feels. Thats how games sounded because its what we could afford, and the xwing games really knew how to make the most of it! That was lovely mate. Happy new year!

Ah! X-Wing! I was amazed that this was possible at the time. Indeed a lot of work to get it working but it was part of the charm of this game. And the reason its one of my favorites today. Merry Christmas Chris.

haha yeah I was a bit stumped when the joystick didn't respond to calibration to be honest. I'll figure it out soon enough. The guy who build the PC for me thinks there may be a conflict with the IO card.
That was great mate. I was never a PC guy in the early 90s but I love seeing stuff like this.
I do have a retro pc set up but it's a relatively modern pc on a vga CRT monitor....relying on GOG Dosbox👍

Merry Christmas brother. I remember getting TIE fighter for dos that I found at a Bookshop. Unfortunately my system at the time couldn't run it because I didn't have the correct kind of video memory. I had to wait to play the Windows 95 CD-ROM version on my Windows 98 machine. Great times with a great game. Had X-Wing and X-Wing Alliance also
Yeah I recall Tie Fighter was a bit resource hungry. I recall when it came out, I had a 486SX and there was no hope in hell of running Tie Fighter.
OMG Lakeside!! I used to end up there with my parents, checking out the Debenhams (?🧐) ‘Global Hypercolour’ colour-changing T-Shirts all the time! 😂 Happy Christmas bud!
I believe it was Debenhams at Lakeside where I picked up Doom for the Jaguar one year :) I even went back there, with my parents and my family in tow, for Christmas shopping in 2019. Last Christmas shopping trip we had together.

Seasons greetings to you and yours Chris. Ever thought about getting one of those devices, I think Dave has one, the mt32pi? Emulates the mt32. Or would you happen to have an original mt32? I never had one myself. When they were new I couldn't afford one. Crossing my fingers that Nightdive's Dark Forces is good. The person who created The Force Engine version of DF is working for Nightdive. The Force Engine version is really good with it's new menus.
I'll probably stick with SB Pro's and compatible, simply because that's where my nostalgia is, for better or worse, lol.

Secondly, good lord that PC is LOUD! It's like Krampus himself has opened the Gates to Hades! Sure, it's fun running old tech and all but surely you could stick some quieter fans in there? Or does it not seem as loud in-person?
Lastly, I bought X-Wing back in '94 to play on my P100-based PC. Unfortunately, I didn't have a decent video card in it, and the game ran slower than a Mandalorian bounty hunter through a sarlaac's digestive track...so I returned the game and, to this day, never got to actually play it. I know, saddest story ever.

That's interesting that you couldn't get it running on a P100. It runs fine on a 386DX. It's a 1993 game and really wasn't resource hungry. Was it the CD version? Perhaps they uprated the textures or something? Very odd. I have the CD version on my shelf (Collectors edition), checking the System Specs, it still states "386DX (486 recommended)". And only basic video card requirements, same as the original. "256 colour VGA". Your P100 would have smashed the specs. That's a real puzzler. Are you sure it was X-Wing and not Tie Fighter Vs X-Wing?
Re the volume of the PC fans, it only has the PSU fan. it's as loud as they were back in the day. The micophone was on the desk right next to the PC as I wanted to capture all the noises the PC makes, including FDD and HDD, so that probably exaggerated it.
@@005AGIMA I think it was the CD version, but I can't be certain, 30 year old fuzzy memories and all. I did play other games on the system, like Descent, Doom, and Duke 3D (lotta "D" games!) but I can't remember if I had upgraded something at that point. Wish I better remembered those kinds of things.

@@ChrisShadowens Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, and Descent are games I too played on my P100 and they all played great, using a normal 1MB SVGA card. Great times. Still no idea why X-Wing would struggle though. Oh well. Happy Christmas mate. Here's to 2024.

That bottle did not last long as my wife also likes to mix Fireball with Cider on occasion. But in the words of Yoda "there is another". :D
