Springbank 10yo… is this the end of the 10?
Переглядів 2,2 тис.14 днів тому
Springbank 10 doesn’t really need an introduction. But is this the end of the bottle… I’m only joking, this is the final drops of the Springbank 10 and it’s been in the shelf for around 3 years. Can a whisky that’s been opened so long and have such a small amount left in it. Keep its texture, smell, taste? Will it be even better than before or will it be quiet and flat? Only one way to find out...
Miltonduff 8yo review
Переглядів 12721 день тому
This Miltonduff was bottled in 2014, and when I got the bottle it was the cloudiest I had ever seen. And first impression I thought the whisky was off or corked, and you can see with the new cork in the bottle. But after some time with the bottle being opened this has changed again… has it changed for the better or worse. Only one way to find out… stay tuned to see my thoughts. Slainte, Let’s t...
Hazelburn 10yo review
Переглядів 387Місяць тому
This week we head back to Campbelltown and we open the Hazelburn 10yo from Springbank distillery. Their unpeated version and triple distilled. I actually won this bottle from the Collectors Club Competition guys, Scott and John. I bought a couple of tickets for 99p and before I knew it I was lucky to win. So I thought let’s get this opened and reviewed. As always let’s talk whisky. Www.thecolle...
My TOP 5 Islay single malts… £50 and under
Переглядів 653Місяць тому
This weeks video is my top 5 drams from islay. With maybe not all your usual suspect, all £50 or under and to an extent easily obtainable drams too. I have put them in no particular order too. Let me know what you think and what you would add or even take away from this selection, I got the idea from the great channel that is JeffWhisky for this one. Slainte and as always let’s talk whisky
Nikka Pure Malt Review
Переглядів 126Місяць тому
This review we leave Scotland, not officially of course but whisky wise, we head to Japan for this Nikka Pure Malt. A style of whisky or history I don’t know to much about so I hope this comes across well and my first real dealing with Japanese whisky. Will I like it? Only one way to find out. Stay tuned and as always. Let’s talk whisky
North British 14yo (signatory vintage)
Переглядів 195Місяць тому
This weeks review is the 14yo North British from Signatory a single grain whisky Disclaimer I’ve lost my sense of smell and taste and didn’t really realize this until I recorded this video… it’s now gone completely but I will we review this soon to get the full potential from it. I hope you can enjoy at least some of the notes I was able to sense and some of the history to. But as always let’s ...
Glenlaird 10yo review
Переглядів 2192 місяці тому
This weeks review on the new look channel is, the Glenlaird 10yo a highland single malt from Stravaig spirits. The folks that bring us Tri Carragh whiskies. Ryan and Orla have done a stunning job building the brand and this Glenlaird is.. it was at one point in time export only but now we’re seeing it on our shelves in the UK and Europe… let’s see what I make of this. And of course, Let’s talk ...
Glen Moray 12yo review
Переглядів 2252 місяці тому
This week brings the Speysider that is Glen Moray 12. A whisky that is 40% abv and doesn’t have any crazy cask finishes but is just an honest first fill bourbon its whole life, can this still be good whisky? , can it still hit the spot? Let’s check it out and see what we think. This is the the first video using the mic so let me know if you think it works or not and as always let’s talk whisky
Scarabus whisky review
Переглядів 2232 місяці тому
Another un corking of this independent bottling of Scarabus from Hunter Laing. See my first thoughts as we go through nose and taste. Price point too. Will this be a whisky we enjoy only one way to find out. An islay single malt, but can we figure out which distillery? As always let’s talk whisky
Ben Nevis 11yo (Hepburn’s choice)
Переглядів 1442 місяці тому
This weeks review is the Ben Nevis 11yo Hepburn’s choice, a bottling by a hunter Laing. This single cask 46% non chill filtered and natural colour has been in a single sherry butt it’s full life. I’ve always been a fan of Ben Nevis, so any chance I can get to try another I will always try. Hope you enjoy and make sure to subscribe for weekly content. Tomatin virgin oak (distillery exclusive 2024)
Переглядів 1323 місяці тому
Tomatin virgin oak (distillery exclusive 2024) a single cask from the highland distillery in Inverness. A distillery that has been around for a long time and at one point the largest producer of whisky in Scotland. This whisky is around 5 and a half years old. Another uncorking and first thoughts on this bottle. As always let’s talk whisky

How to approach a whisky festival? Glasgow whisky festival edition
Thanks! But here in Japan, I can buy four bottles of Benromach 10 for just one Springbank 10! I don't think I have a choice!^^
I've been enjoying my 750ml bottle, and I found it for an amazing price.
Good listen Kev and really interesting of whisky’s that have been involved in the blend.
My last bottle of SB 10 was waaaay better after about 3 months. It started out wonderful but just kept getting better and better. I am about to open another to try but i will take my time with it. As far as availability it isn’t on the shelf that often but I find it out of sheer persistence. I check store apps, IG posts, visit the stores regularly etc. It is out there if you make it a priority and take the time. Thanks for the review! Cheers!
Amazingly cloudy. I’ve never seen something like that before.
Interesting bottling Kevin. Nice review. Cheers
Absolutely gutted we did not pick this up Kevin when we were at the festival. But it’s that old quiche you can’t purchase everything! Callum and I rocked up 2 Watt HQ to be greeted by Katie W and Julie H but it was to early to legally by alcohol and this was on the shelf alongside DD it’s definitely not Glen Scotia before heading to SB. Another great review keep up the outstanding work
Thanks for reviewing this one Kevin. Was lucky to have had a wee dram. Great stuff. Slàinte mhath
Sounds like a good one Kev. The recent emergence of high quality blends aimed at enthusiasts is a good sign.
There is a lot going on inside that bottle, save me a sample
Like Jeff I’ve got a bottle on order and have yet to pick it up This review is making me looking forward to it.
Great uncorking of an interesting bottle buddy. I got one all paid for just waiting to get my little hands on it. Made me even more excited for it! Cheers!
I’m kind of bored with Springbank 10. Way too difficult to obtain. That has turned me onto many delicious scotch expressions that are as good or rival this Springbank expression. After 3 bottles of Springbank 10 I moved on tire complex Springbank. I think it’s further the Springbank has been open for so long! It stays delicious! Awesome video! Try the Lagavulin Offerman Edition 4!!! Fabulous!!
Delicious dram!
I always have a lot of bottles of spirits in my collection, and I have a tendency to work on them for years. If they are kept out of light and heat, and if they remain well sealed (which can be a challenge with the nasty, crumbly corks that bottlers unfortunately continue to use), the booze in the bottles lasts a very long time. I worry a little about unaged spirits since they haven't spent years in barrels being exposed to oxygen, but even they seem to hold up for a long time. For some strange reason, Springbank 10 has completely disappeared from the stores where I live, but Springbank 15 has been available. The people at one store that has a reliable supply of the 15 tell me that they have been trying to keep the 10 in stock but have been unable to obtain it. In the past, the 10 was the easiest one to find. I wonder what has changed. I love the 15, and I am slowly working on a bottle, but I also love the 10 and would like to be able to find it again. A local bar has the 18. It is great too, but I like the 15 a little better.
Thanks for reviewing Kevin. Love Springbank 10 and have had several other expressions. I can't recall any bottles that really have gone bad, however it has happened that the peat intensity of some whiskies will diminish with time (after the neck pour). Slàinte mhath
55. Quid for a spring bank 10 you’re so lucky man. I have to pay $90 US for tax for a spring bank 10. Pre-pandemic spring bank 15 was readily available for 100 US. I drink that bottle so fast and I regret it. I can’t find a spring Bank 15 now and if I do, it’s 160 US before tax.
Yep, it often seems that a whisky can improve once it's been opened. Many talk of a "tight" or a "reluctant to open up" impression on the initial neck pour, while some weeks (or months) later, it can seem to have "opened up" or gained "balance." Whatever the case may be, it's fun to enjoy different impressions of the same whisky on different days in different moods and in different company. On the German market, SB 10 is more often available than not available in more recent times and asking prices seem to have stabilized around roughly €60 for a 70cl bottle. That's the good news. The bad news is that the 12yo Cask Strength, the 15yo and the 18yo are virtually impossible to get at prices which are nothing short of completely ridiculous. Retailer mark-ups are phenomenal, in every negative sense of the word. So, yes Kev, let's enjoy the SB 10yo as the one reliably available SB on the market. And yes, let's not worry if it takes 5 or even 10 years to get to the bottom of the bottle. Cheers!
Great descriptors Ken , I’m lucky as I have a few spares to enjoy down the track when I can’t get them. Cheers
This is probably crazy but I get a iron taste on the palate. Kinda like blood in the mouth. That’s not a negative, though. I absolutely love everything about this whisky.
My go to whisky never had a problem buying Springbanks Great review The last dram will be good will never loose its life
You're extremely fortunate Gav. I don't know where you get your Springbank from but the vast majority can't buy it.
Like Gav I've never had too much trouble finding Springbank. Admittedly you need to keep an eye on the release dates because of it's relatively small batch production, but if you do.that you can usually hunt one down. If you are reliant on online then it's not going to be easy unfortunately due to all manner of nonsense, but going to your local specialist retailer and supporting them in person usually brings its rewards
@@juiceterry1818 That's the problem. Unless you live in Scotland and have a relationship with a retailer it's a dog's dinner. Outside of the privileged customer it's highly restricted, limited and gone within hours at best. Local Barley is invisible for people unlike Gav.
There are several non online retailers dotted about with Springbank allocation where the 10 can be had off the shelf. It doesn't hang around & when one finds it it's incumbent on the finder not to be greedy. Interestingly standard Longrow doesn't seem to suffer the same über demand issues.
@@uilleachan I've been drinking Springbank for a very long time and I do know a few retailers that get tiny allocations but they are tiny and usually allocated to a chosen few. You don't see it on shelves outside Scotland unless it's been marked up.
Was lucky enough to have a small store in South Carolina with a number of SB on the shelf 4 or 5 years ago. The 10 year was $65 and even had a couple of older "black labels" from 2017. The 10 is so enjoyable. But my favorite is their 12 year CS Batch 21, 4 different finishing barrels. BEAUTIFUL. Cheers!
Sitting and watching someone nose and taste a fabulous dram for 10 minutes is almost as good as doing the same oneself! 😁
Love SB 10, one of my favorites! Cheers!
I do think Whisky is better once the level is down a bit and has had some time. For very low bottles, if you are concerned about long-term (mine will not last 3 years 😂😅) pouring into a sample bottle that is full, will get you indefinite storage. Cheers Kevin
I usually find Springbank gets better once opened as level goes down. Thanks for the review!
One of my go to bottles this one Kevin, just have to limit it lol
I have a few in my stash along with other Springbanks, only 1 open at a time. There are tricks in getting your hands on them though.
For Springbank I find it is even more (compared to other distilleries) down to my own 'daily form', how great an experience it is, what notes I am getting out of it. Never had any bottle that was getting 'worse' with time per se - I rather agree with you, they might be getting slightly better over time actually. (My oldest open SB is 4 years open, so not superold of course.)
It’s great to see that whisky doesn’t need rushed and it can keep all its good notes from start to finish. And 3 years for me with a little left in it just shows that the other whiskies on the shelf that I’ve been worrying about with a low level may also still be good. So another experiment to finish them… and of course create more space for new bottles. Slainte buddy
I've had bottles on the go for up to 19 years with zero problems, so it is refreshing to see someone admit that whisky can still be good after 3 years - some newcomers delude themselves into thinking that the liquid changes very rapidly (when, in fact, it is a combination of their palate on different days and changes in their expectations) and that whisky has a shelf life/expiry date! I just wish I could re-find the link to a study that used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to prove that there is absolutely no measurable chemical change in whisky over two years (and I wish they had run the experiments for longer).
Totally agree, some days whisky can taste fantastic and we don’t know why. Good mood, nice food had a good round of golf etc. you can re visit the same whisky days, months years after and have the opposite, bad day, bad food and the whisky may taste “off” because of the change in circumstances. I went into this bottle open minded and it’s great to see it’s still got all the good stuff about it. Slainte buddy
@@Letstalkwhisky I hope you can get another bottle without too much trouble or expense (I've found it helps knowing someone who runs a whisky shop...).
Highly dependent on headroom and power/youth or age/fragility of the liquid. Oxidisation is a real thing, bit you don’t really have to worry about it with young and powerful whiskies like this. I learned my lesson with a 37 year old Glenmorangie which went bitter after a couple of drams. That hurt.
@@richardjohannesT Two problems: it is NOT oxidisation in a scientific sense - if anything happens it is off-gassing of volatile components - and I have had subtle Speysiders down at an inch of fill level for years without spoiling. But then I might as well try to convince someone in a MAGA hat that Trump is a criminal...
Love the ASMR swirling at the end!
Loving the new intro jingle Kevin!
Great review buddy and really glad it opened up to be a great whisky.Hope you enjoy the rest of the bottle's journey. 🥃
Again another interesting top review especially with the cork and cloudiness of the whisky.
Wow look at the colour of that! Interesting review Kevin. Cheers.
Thanks for reviewing Kevin Have tasted only a few Miltonduffs myself, all of them decent drams. And I've only occasional seen a whisky as cloudy as this one... good sign. Slàinte mhath
Wow! Never seen a whisky that cloudy before - I guess that is one way to increase the fiber intake of your diet Kev 😋. Cheers 🙂
Great list Kevin! I would nominate the Kilchoman Sanaig……I think that’s under 50.
Good summary, Kevin! 😊
Either you are the luckiest guy in the world, or this lottery isn’t being very well run. Always thought Hazelburn was the poor relation to its famous siblings. Looking forward to the Laddie review
Fantastic, Kevin! I'm going to check these guys out, Cheers!
10/10 shirt game. Top review you lucky bugger! Cheers.
The hazelburn can surprise many whisky enthusiasts in a blind tasting where it leans towards a lowland whisky. Can I try the other bottle you’ve won?
Hi Kev what you have there is an older bottling of the Nikka blend. The newer bottlings have a cream yellow label. Plus I’ve heard from other reviewers it could have liquid that is older than 3 years. Not confirmed though, I have 2 of those bottles and one of the newer ones. I too like them for what they are.
Awesome!! Thank you so much for the information, I did see the two labels but I couldn’t really find much out about the liquid. That’s pretty cool it’s one of the older ones and I feel I’ve done well with the price now for purchasing this bottle. I’ll maybe re visit it tonight and have a dram and see if there’s been any changes. Slainte buddy
Congrats on the ballot wins! Thanks for sharing too!
I love this Hazelburn 10 yo! Delicious! Lovely video! Cheers! 🙂
Good watch again Kev. Love the crazy shirt ha ha
Glad to hear of your success in winning those bottles Kev! Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy 🙂. If they have the Lottery over in the UK, perhaps you should give that a go as well? Cheers!
Hazelburn is very much underrated
Many thanks Kevin for your honest, straightforward opinion. Much appreciated. Kind regards, Sandro
