  • This review we leave Scotland, not officially of course but whisky wise, we head to Japan for this Nikka Pure Malt. A style of whisky or history I don’t know to much about so I hope this comes across well and my first real dealing with Japanese whisky. Will I like it?
Only one way to find out. Stay tuned and as always.
    Let’s talk whisky

If you have trouble with the name of Nikka's second distillery, just think of the Karate Kid's Mr Miyagi with "kyo" on the end...
Masataka Taketsuru studied at Glasgow University, then worked at Longmorn, Bo'ness and Hazelburn Distilleries, before returning to Japan to help Shinjiro Torii found Yamazaki Distillery in 1923 for what is now Suntory, only later starting his own company in the north. His wife was Jessie Roberta Cowan, but was usually known as Rita, and came from Kirkintilloch. Oh, and screw caps are vastly superior to stupid corks!

Loved hearing about this one Kevin. Nikka is a whiskey that continues to impress me but to be fair, is aided by the circumstances surrounding my exposures to this distillery. Have had the Yiochi at Roy's Blind Challenge in Glascow, the Coffee Grain with you in Edinburgh, and received the Coffee Malt from my friend Tom O. here in Tucson. Each has been so enjoyable in their own way and feel very fortunate to have tried them. Cheers and glad to hear you are feeling better buddy 🙏

Mee - ya - geek - ee -oh , once bought a bottle at a festival, the same screw cap bottle as yourself, got it home it was awful! Many many containers of Scotch and Canadian whisky and or new make still heading to Japan every month, which tells us something.

Hi Kev what you have there is an older bottling of the Nikka blend. The newer bottlings have a cream yellow label. Plus I’ve heard from other reviewers it could have liquid that is older than 3 years. Not confirmed though, I have 2 of those bottles and one of the newer ones. I too like them for what they are.

Awesome!! Thank you so much for the information, I did see the two labels but I couldn’t really find much out about the liquid. That’s pretty cool it’s one of the older ones and I feel I’ve done well with the price now for purchasing this bottle. I’ll maybe re visit it tonight and have a dram and see if there’s been any changes. Slainte buddy
