- This weeks review is a new whisky… but in an old sense, from what I could find this original bottling from burns Stewart owners at the time is the ledaig, the ledaig 10yo came to the table around 2006/2007 to replace this bottle, so from my knowledge this may be a 2005 bottling.
Make sure you stay for the price reveal in the video to see how much I paid for this little piece of history.
As always let’s talk whisky
Ah good find ! Makes for an intresting review.
Kevin, this is an amazing bargain, well done! Barcode 5029704700158, this early Stewart Burns is natural colour but is chill filtered. Matured in refill Ex-Bourbon. The mixed reviews for this is, in my opinion due to the poor cork seal which was in many cases, too loose. If you do happen to get a good one, then you are in for a treat.
Like many old bottles, first impressions from the neck pour will show the bottle shock of a whisky having been opened after so many years sleeping. Wait at least a week and try again. The Ledaig will hopefully have got over its shyness and will be ready to give you a fuller experience. Fresh, effervescent sea spray, lemon grass, honey, stewed apples an sultanas. What a pity they chill filtered this. It would have been so much better, but for the price, excellent value.
Good review Kevin . Ledaig very good whisky , i like 10 and 18 yo ) Slainte !
Now there's one I haven't seen before! Nice hunting to find that bargain on a less common bottling. I am wondering if it may be a little like the Tobermory 10 to Tobermory 12 difference I experienced (12y much better) and I hadn't realized there might be a change to Distell that brought about that improvement? Hope it opens up and shines a bit more like Reb suggested 👍. Cheers buddy 🙏
Sounds like it’s an OK whisky nothing special. Thanks
