When Can I Pick My Avocados🥑Avocado Talk🥑
In this video I discuss a question that comes up here and there, when can I pick my avocados?🥑Avocado Talk🥑
1. Most avocados will need to hang on the tree for 12 plus months. Know the variety, if you don't know, try to figure out what it is. If you know the variety, count the months from when they flower and set fruit. Mexicola is 7 months while Holiday is possible 18 months.
2. Know your location and microclimate. Orange county vs the IE even though close by will have a little different fruiting season. Northern vs Southern California will be different.
3. Fruit wise, check to see if they start to turn black or darker on the tree, not all varieties will turn black. Reed will not turn black on the tree.
4. Look at the skin, it typically starts out shinny and turns dull when they are about ready to be picked.
5. Shake the fruit, some varieties will have a loose fruit cavity.
6. Look at the stem to see if it starts to turn from Green to Yellow. I also look to see if there is a black mark between the stem and fruit.
7. If some animal has started to nibble on the fruit, that is a good sign that they are starting to become ready.
Also, you don't want to harvest the whole tree, try one first and see if they are ready on the counter.

She just ignores all my advice about waiting until Summer. “ they are big they must be ripe “. Thanks for sharing. You are sharing great info to the public on when to picked the fruits, plus where you are living it makes a big difference on when the avocado fruit will be mature and what to look for. The city/location/climate effect the maturity of the fruits. Southern California, Central Valley, Central Coast/ inland Central Coast/ Bay Area, Northern California. Thanks for this video. I've got my very first Stewart still hanging from the small tree / young tree in a 15 ga pot, in Anaheim. It is 1/2 black and 1/2 green. Should I wait until it is totally black to harvest it? Do the stems of avocados turn yellow - as one sign - as to when they should be picked? Have you heard anything like that? I harmed a couple of my Reeds as well as at least 1 Sharwil due to not staking them up. Consequently, they grew horizontally roughly 8 feet when just 2 feet off the ground. The trunks are just over 1 inch in diameter. I'm going to have to prune most of that horizontal growth off and allow other branches grow back vertically. Such a sad story.

Ive had success with using those plastic containers from the supermarket that they use for strawberries as a cage for my avocados. Might be harder for you since you have so many avocados but it worked against squirrels and possums for me. Raccoons are another story but after getting a pellet rifle they’ve been visiting less and less but they do come thru sometimes to test the defenses. Also do you have any more info on mexicola and persea mites? Sounds like some interesting info to read

Little shits eating your avocados. Same problem in Australia with a type of possum. When they start eating them I wrap the avocado with a brown sandwich bag and secure it with a peg. This works really well. And dog hair in a bag that vents air seems to deter them also.

My bacon has 1 avocado left. Squirrels during the day, possum and raccoons at night. I noticed what I think was a trap near your tree. I have a bigger trap that I am thinking of setting up for the raccoons and possum. I had the possum trapped and felt sorry for it, I let it go. @@1970SBenny so the trick for me and catching squirrels using the trap you see in the video is walnuts and pecans. They can't resist and I've caught 2 in one day. I've tried peanuts, almonds, cashews but pecans are what's worked. I release possums too, they are actually beneficial but squirrels will take my entire tree down.
