Thank You for the updates. My Gem, Carmen, Gwen & Don Gillogly is precocious still hanging on to the fruits. Look like I will have Reed this year, too early to count. Lamb, bacon is producing lot more this year. All of my Queen, Jan Boyce, Nabal dropped. Still have some fruit on Hellen, Sir Prize, Choquette, Pinkerton, Oro Negro & Edranol. Will know more by end of August. Zone 8b West Paso Robles Ca. elevation 2000.
Hello, what is your email? I'm interested in a maluma
What can I do to reduce fruit drop ? I'm n Cali zone 9
@@lion5452 the key is building a strong root system than reducing stress. Mulch, water during heat waves, shade if possible. Once they are mature it get easier
I think it’s too hot for them. They drop them from stress I’m assuming. I put canopies over my trees anytime it’s over 101 degrees.
@@raulcasas4548 stress will definitely affect how much if any fruit are held. I have a mixed bag, some of my trees are holding the most fruit it has ever generated while others drop all of them. We'll see, we have fruit so that's good. Thanks for watching!
What do you do with the seeds? Will you plant and see what comes up? Anyway, great video, thanks for sharing. Adding this to my avocado bucket list.
@@vegardno I think I lost track of this seed. If this is productive locally then it would definitely be something everyone should consider.
Wonderful to see all those NorCal varieties! Thanks for the update. We will get more Lamorinda to you in the future.
The Oaklando looks excellent!
Fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞
Thanks for sharing your trees and input on rootstock. Yeah, if I get a tree that isn't doing well I usually replace them because with seedling rootstock you just never know and up here clonals aren't available.
Any update on the Lunas? thank you
Just bad news because they're still going to try to charge the full fee for us back yard gardeners. I'm not willing to spend the full 500$+ to get just 1 tree, crazy. I'll keep the community updated once I hear more.
@@AvocadoTalk I see, yeah, was curious. I'm a commercial grower and I like the idea of a small B type tree to use as a pollinator for Hass and Gem trees but I think the fee structure is a no-go. Also, what if you wanted to sell your farm, that liability I suppose would have to be paid off. Anyway I don't think it will take off with Calif growers.
@@gypsy317 A lot of hype, until I see and hear more proof that it is what it is then I'm slow to jump in. On the flip side, I am just an enthusiast so I wouldn't mind playing around to see if it is any good. SC Gold might be a better bet.
I'm looking for a B avocado your mentioning trees but Lil confused on wht names are b trees. I have a Hass A tree needing a good tasting B not to big of fruit though and im in N florida a few Recommendations would be nice much appreciated
Not sure what you can get where you are at but there are some "B" Type. All very good to excellent tasting. Kona, Kahalu'u and Edranol maybe best tasting : Bacon Edranol Ettinger Fuerte Hellen Jim Bacon Kahalu'u Kona Sharwil Nabal Oro Negro Queen Sir Prize Nimlioh Zutano
@@AvocadoTalk wow nice list tannage is local I've see it. Much appreciated sir.
@@mototechsam3051 I've heard of people begging able to get Oro Negro out there and it being productive. Good luck!
Looking good! Keep up the grafting!
Keeps me busy! Thanks for watching, hope your FL varieties are doing well this year!
@@AvocadoTalk they are doing well. Getting lots of fruit. Keep us updated on the size of the fruit and everything!
Great video REM, thanks for sharing! Hope you survived the heat.
extra water for now
It really does seems to be lottery with seedlings. My small sharwil tree structure looks nothing like yours buts its holding on to its fruit pretty well. Still debating if I should cut them off. I was wondering if you noticed the clonal rootstock do better dealing with the heat?
Yes my clonal are handling the heat much better. Gem on Zerala gets less water and holding fruit whereas my unknown rootstock from la verne Gem isn't doing anything. I think I have time but is it worth it to water in the hopes of it finally making it. I might just get Clonal and replace them sooner than later. If yours are holding the fruit than you might be ok.
Background music sounds like a cross of Top Gun and Scarface sound track.
I thought it sounded cool when I first heard it, it is not for everybody but it is all good. Thanks for watching!
@AvocadoTalk love the videos . Good work
Practice makes perfect. Your grafting skills are coming along nicely. When I use Surround WP, I have a 2 gal pump spray that I use mostly on my many fig trees when they are young, but most are more mature now and can handle the sun exposure and heat. Today I tossed 30 caprifig trees that were in 5 gal pots that I had rooted from scion wood. Most were 2-3 years old, but without the fig wasp in my area, I just couldn't justify the use of water and also the extra time it takes to water them. I still have about 60 potted fig trees in 15 and 25 gal pots, some of which I will put in-ground once our house remodel is completed (sometime in 2025). That's when I will also plant my potted avocado trees. Thanks for the update! Stay hydrated.
Nice job on the Oaklando! Mine died 😢
@@eligomez7667 Don't give up. Do it again
It's odd how few fruit that Ettinger could hold after flowering so vigorously. It goes to show that you can't predict the final fruitset based on flowering. But fortunately you have plenty of other trees covered with fruit to compensate.
I think it's because we had a weird year this variety didn't like it. My Edranol lost everything. Plus I didn't fertilize at all this year, maybe that had an effect but the other trees did ok so who knows. I'm still experimenting
Nice update. Have you considered digging a small trench to cut the Eucalyptus roots?
@@bruinbiochem06 yeah, I even considered using a copper sheet as a root barrier.
REM, thanks for your updates. I think everybody leans off everybody to try to figure out what’s best for our own homes and properties. I enjoy your feedback and Johnny’s, at Johnny’s World - avocados, as well. There’s still a lot of varieties I haven’t tasted yet, and I’m dying to. Enjoy your summer.
Always a work in process, I just fixed another water leak just now. With this heat coming on, make sure your trees stay hydrated. You've been around since the beginning so I appreciate it and do learn from your comments!
Love your enthusiasm and yard. But, you should not have any weed growth in or near your trees. Also, I always have 6 to 8 inches of mulch under my trees and extending out past the drip line. My yard is heavy clay so my trees are on 18 inch mounds of sandy loam carted into the planting area. Avocados require this imo.
I totally agree but it's hard work. The top section where I have some of my trees, I just can't keep up. The crab grass is just crazy and the kurapia is strong. I did a better job when I had less trees. I had a lot of mulch and it kept the weeds down but then it over took the mulch. The bottom section, I have a good amount of avocado leaves and it's helping. The section where I like have a little green really for the kiddos and their volleyball but it spreads. Fun times.
Good to see that your trees are trees are doing great and that you will be having a lot of fruit from the different varieties. Have you ever tried fruit tree netting on your trees to keep the squirrels from eating the fruit? I'm thinking of using one on the Maluma and Gem. Hopefully that will save a lot of the fruit. If any of your followers have used them, I welcome their input.
Gabe: This was a 6-20-24 presentation to our club as to dealing with things like squirrels, rats, possums, birds. ua-cam.com/video/NRiYtcCStqQ/v-deo.htmlsi=V6XnONx5GQQ7rKhh
Great video REM, wow you are having a great year! You did a great job arranging your avocado trees, I really should have thought about mine before I planted. Great that you have a nice Jujube Tree. Great video, your avocado trees are looking great, thanks for sharing!
I can't catch up to all your jujubes and dragon fruit but I'm working on it. Fun nonetheless.
@@AvocadoTalk Very cool that you are growing both jujube and dragon fruit too! I am really impressed with all your avocado trees and fruit production, very impressive my friend!
I enjoy all of your videos. ..Btw what is the name of the music in the background?
@@marcus-ds8yj Jeremy Blake - Heaven and Hell . Just sounds cool, maybe not avocado appropriate.
Nice collection you have, try some of the newer Brokaw rootstock some good ones coming out to handle rootrot.
@@RareAvoTreesI actually ordered a bunch on my last batch from Brokaw. I ended up selling a lot of them to people who wanted them and didn't order originally with my first order. One of the newer ones I got is Zerala, ordered Leola, Tami (VC801), Ben-Ya’acov1 (VC66) and Miriam (VC218). Should have kept them and planted instead of the GEM from la verne .
@@AvocadoTalk nice I bet they were happy I'm getting about 30 in a few weeks from Brokaw on about 6 different rootstocks, no dusa or Duke 7 on the list.i may sell a few of my extra also.
Awesome, what did you get? Variety and Rootstock? I'm just curious...
@@AvocadoTalk,,,, the ones I got where Maluma, gem and Hass for the Hass I will likely turn in into a 2 or 3 way tree but some rootstock I wanted was only on Hass,i would have got lamb but not avail till 2026.
@@AvocadoTalk I will also graft Cannonball avo to some of the new rootstock, Cannonball runs to 3 pounds but perhaps on clonal rootstock I can get 3.5 or 4 pounds if the right match up is found.
REM....stay hydrated sir. It's going to be super hot the next 13 days up here in El Dorado Hills. Looks like 100+ for the whole duration with 5 days over 105....got to be very vigilant on the watering regime during this stretch. Chris
@@chrisinsley5880 I remember when it got to 110+ here and it killed a lot of the avocados, make sure you keep them hydrated. Another thing, spray them down in the middle of the day multiple times if possible. Once you get past the heat wave it gets easier. Good luck to us all!
love your videos and the info your providing, been a follower for a while. i feel the background music is a little much maybe out of context or too loud or something, hard to focus on the point of the vid.
I get it, I go back and forth with music and no music. Extra low volume next time and I do change things up here and there. It is all about the avocados and the journey, thanks for watching and being a sub!
how old are your hass trees and jan boyce?
Hass planted in '21, 15 Gallon. Other 2 Hass and Jan Boyce 2 months earlier, 5Gallon and it look like it will take over the 15Gallon.
REM, Nice plants! I’m a new b to avocado growing. This is my first year of trying to grow avocados. I have seven grafted varieties that I’m growing and wanted to know what type of fertilizer do you use, cycle or how often you use and window the flowers start to bloom? I’m located in Hawaii. Appreciate it! Thanks
Excellent! Fun journey. Lately I have been using a organic fertilizer made by a company called TRUE.ag. I buy a bag of cow or chicken manure, mix in the TRUE and throw it out. When you first start, they say you can do a light fertilizing monthly then second year bi-monthly, than 4 times a year. I think just 3 times a year is OK. Sorry early spring, than summer and fall. This year I didn't fertilize at all and things are OK, it would probably do better if I used some. With that said, you don't have to use organic, my local big box store carries a citrus and avocado fertilizer that has worked just fine for me. Good luck, I'll headed to Maui soon!
Hey REM - Lots of successes to celebrate. I like the "mortality rate" comment. We all have lost trees for sure. You have sooo many varieties!!
You can not win them all but it is fun to try. Stay cool with this heat we got coming!
Quick Question - When did you stop using shade cloth for your younger trees?
@@neurocognitive at this point most of my trees are big enough now that I don't need to use the shade cloth. I also noticed that if I water more I don't really need shade cloth. On the really young trees and especially the new growth that is really tender I use surround WP. This seems to be easier than managing it with shade cloth. The key for me has really been about getting the root ball established. I have a couple of trees that are super small that I will still put shade cloth over if I do put them into the ground right now. So really kind of a balancing act more shade less water Les shade more water.
@@AvocadoTalk Thanks for the detailed response. I have sprayed my trees with Surround WP, and they still burned. I then added the shade cloth, and that seemed to do the trick. I also kept them watered, and also did foliar spraying with water on especially hot days - multiple times per day. This is with the young potted trees, but with the 105 temps and direct intense sun conditions, I still lost 3 trees last summer. The ones I lost did not get the shade cloth until later, which was too late. Thanks again!!
8:30 wait, what? How do you grow that much tree in such a small pot?
If you got luck and have a around rootstock then it's possible to grow a decent sized avocado in a pot, I recommend the larger pot the better. These trees I show are clonal rootstock which is a double grafting process but you are guaranteed a rootstock of your selection.
Sorry mean to say strong rootstock
I saw you said the bacon is 3. How big was it when you planted it. Im in 92399 and we get fairly cold at 3000’ elevation. But my neighbor has a nice 6’ full bush avocado on exposed south hillside doing well. I haven’t got a chance to see what variety it is yet.
My bacon started at just 2 feet tall and has been really productive. Also the seeds have made great rootstock. It's actually one of the tougher varieties that I have and produces my first set of fruit for the year. Some say get a mexicola but I would rather have the bacon. Just protect them when they are young, once the roots get established, it get easier.
I tried the 1/3 honey to 2/3 water trick that Gary Recommended and this year. Highest number of set fruit on my 9 year avocado. Lucky our weather isn't too bad this year in SGV. No drop has happened since about May, keeping the tree watered lighty and did not fertilize. Left the leave drop under the tree when it was flowering. Love seeing ur beautiful trees 😊
This year the fruit set was epic, I'm having trouble keeping the fruit. The honey and water probably helped yours even more, congrats!
between Carmen and lamb hass which one would you keep in a container? and which of the two in your experience had made lots of fruit in one season? thanks
Congrats you got both, the lamb might be easier to manage in the pot. You are better off putting them both in the ground if you can. A Gwen in a pot world probably do ok and it has excellent fruit and productive. Good luck!
@@AvocadoTalk yeah I have a gem in ground and Gwen in a pot for my summer cados. For fall I have : lamb and reed , not sure which one I would want In ground and pot… since my back yard space is so limited
@@jlakindd all excellent varieties
I have a Zutano that is about six years old. Last year at produced fruit, but it would only get to the size of a marble, turn black, and fall off. This year I have about 30 little avocados five which are about the size of my thumb and seem to be developing well. But some of the little marble size ones are starting to turn black and fall off as they did last year. I live up by Merced California, which is in the central valley. Any ideas what could be causing them to turn black and fall off?
How hot is it there. Maybe a bit more water and some shade cloth. When the trees get big they can tolerate much more than the younger ones.
For me I added more water and used micro spray to moisten a larger area. When it's hot I've added extra water for my trees. Good luck!
@@SpYucaipaSoCalit has been between 94-106 degrees. I will try a more deep water and get a shade cloth! Thanks so much😊
@@AvocadoTalkThanks!👍
Hey REM - All of my trees flowered, but no fruit. They are just too young at this stage, but looking healthy. At this point my goal is to protect them from the direct sunlight and keep them watered - especially when the temps get high. The SC Gold finally perked up and looks like it will make it. Also, the JB I got from Ellen survived and is starting to thrive. I noticed that the trees with darker leaves seem to handle the sun/heat better than the trees with lighter colored leaves. Thanks for the update.
I find that epicenter trees take a little more time but they typically do give, patience. Since they perked up, you should be good to go
@@AvocadoTalk I agree
Welcome back from vacation! Wow, bummer on the irrigation leak. Great video REM, everything is looking great, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Johnny!

Perhaps the amount of rain and wind during flowering period contributed to poor pollenization , I live here in Vista which is considered the avocado belt of the US and did not see many bees during this period of flowering. Had lots of flowers and small pebble sized fruitlets which 90% dropped. Also the marine layer and wet mornings for over two months was not so favorable we did not get a real spring as such. Plumerias also are just barely starting to develop inflows and leaves in the last two weeks. Interesting!
Yes it was really just a weird year, I also had weeks where we had cool marine layer haze that didn't burn off till later. I was nice to be able to work in the back yard in the AM. There are a lot of variables but I really starting to think that rootstock has more of an effect on fruit set and holding characteristics that previously thought. Example, GEM from Brokaw which is younger and smaller has more fruit than my older GEM from the old La Verne. Just odd. Vista is such a cool area, I actually had a guy get a couple of avocados from me that lived in Vista.
Apply gibberellic acid to reduce small fruit shedding or foliar application of fertilizer containing silicon in the form of orthosilicic acid. They both have different working mechanisms, but in general terms they are about managing stress, especially heat stress.
I've looked into this in the past but never tried it. Have you tried it and have you seen a difference?
@@AvocadoTalk The cause of these drops is actually more than one. Competition between young fruit and vegetative growth, sensitivity to temperature extremes; and water deficit stress.I used silicon in avocado in a greenhouse environment and I found it very successful and the dropping was almost non-existent, despite the extremely hot and very variable air temperature and humidity of the greenhouse. Gibberellic acid, on the other hand, I used it in fruit dropping in cherries and it does such a good job that it is difficult when you try to tear the fruit stems with your hand.
Seems like my fruit set is increasing on my 3 year old trees. I’m really impressed with the GEM on G6 from Maddock. Over 8 feet tall with a 7 foot spread. Just under 3 dozen from last season. Picking the last one this weekend. Carmen had 2 flushes of flowers and fruit set. Reed is doing excellent with fruits set. The heat is coming. We’ll see what happens. Thanks for your update.
The heat is coming. Stay hydrated!
Wow nice 😊😊
Thanks!
Just like yours, lots of flowers, and lots of drop...
Just a weird year so far. We are going to get a lot of heat, not sure if you guys are down south, stay hydrated!
For me about 90% of all fruit set ends up dropping. Just part of avocado life.
Yeah definitely part of avocados... I expect some fruit drop but some of my trees dropped all of its fruit.
@@AvocadoTalk yes I understand now. My Pinkerton did that for a number of years and it was frustrating. My Bacon and hass were setting small amount but Pinkerton zero.
😮
damn how did u get so much growth with the SC in one year? aint no way that little 12-18inch twig grew a thick trunk in 12 months. need to knowwhat you did to it lol
It's a secret. 😂😂 I got a lot of fruit set on it right now too.
@@AvocadoTalk spill the beans bro, i aint a commercial grower. i just don't want my 70$ gem tree to die LOL my GEM vs the GEM she told you not to worry about 💀
Gems on clonal not much fruit drop, 20-30 and 10-20 on other leola, zerala, Just planted this spring from brokaw, gems on zutano massive fruit drop, 15 gallon hass just planted dropped all fruitlets, Jim bacon 1000 fruitset still holding couple 100s, littlecado from 500 to 50-100, gwen has 10+ other Gwen 5+, reed set 400+ fruitlets still holding, lamb hass has 100+ still holding on both trees not much drop, edranol no fruit set just flowers, mexicola was loaded 500+ fruitset down to 100, both ponchos holding 4-10 fruits each, zutano has about 15+ still, both one year pinkerton zutano roots, dropped all fruits, bacon holding 5+ fruits, both reeds holding 50+ and 200+, holiday holding 10-15, ettinger small amount 10-15 on each tree, joey 1_ fruit, still, don gillogly has 4 fruits still,
All of the trees are 5 yrs to 1 yr, in ground a few were from 15 gallon most from sleeves and 5 gallon, except the little cado which is 20+ yrs in ground
Looks like you are going to still have an amazing amount of fruit. I find it interesting that the rootstock does have more of an effect than previously thought.
seedling rootstock is variable, zutano roots and gem seem to be a bad combination when the trees are young maybe it changes as it matures hold more fruit, though it seems the clonal rootstock with gem is awesome combination
From what I see it looks like I may have to sell or give some away, so I'm actually wanting the heavy fruit trees to thin out, im trying to underwater etc the ones I want holiday, gem, gwen, d gillogly im watering but not counting on it yet until I see
REM....weighing back in.....I have had less fortunate experience than you in the last 6 or so weeks. Recapping, I have one nice size Mexicola Grande in the ground and 7 other Avocado small trees in either 24 inch boxes or 15 gallon buckets. The Mexicola had hundreds of fruitlets on it after flowering but now I can only see 3 fruits. Maybe there is a couple more but that is what happened last year similarly. All the smaller container tree's produced a small number of fruits but they mostly dropped the fruits. The best variety for me at this point is the Lamb......it hast 22 nice fruits and it's only a 3.5 foot tree but I think it's a year older than the other container trees. I can't be sure but it looks like a more dwarf tree but also an older tree in a 15 gallon container. I lost lots of fruit as well. The good news is that i did not get any fruit last year except 3 pieces on the Mexicola Grande so I'm moving in the right direction although slowly! Cheers......Chris
Other people are having the same experience this year, it's just weird. Looking at all my trees with fruit so far, it's not a bad year and the fruit set is decent and I can't get too greedy. Hang in there, you will get there. Thanks for watching!
