    Looking good out there! Just a reminder that Hass is still the king.

      The question is will the king ever get taken down. So far does it seem like there's anything that compares. I think the closest thing is probably GEM, and this year it's going crazy.

    Great video REM, wow, that is a great harvest on your remaining Hass. Your other avocado trees are load with fruit too, very nice! Great job on cutting down the weeds, I had so much weed growing everywhere. Thanks for sharing!

      Sometimes I think it might be better for me to just hire somebody to do it, but on the flip side it's also really good exercise to actually go out and pull weeds. It does make the avocados taste a lot better when you know that you've put a lot of effort into it. Should be a great year for all of us. Keep us updated how your avocados are doing.

      @@AvocadoTalk Actually I do a lot my weed maintenance myself as well since it is good exercise indeed. You really take good care of your avocado trees and thus they are all doing well. Great video REM, have a great week!

    Damn squirrels... nice harvest.

      They are brave, I ran after them just to see what they would do and it seriously carried the avocado up the tree. I thought it would just drop it and run off but it was a heavy fruit and it still wasn't giving up on it.

    Just harvested my last 4 GEM today. 6’ tree planted from 15 gallon two years ago produced 18 fruit. Riverside County near UCR

    Hey REM - Amazing fruit set you've got this year! You're going to be swimming in avocados next harvest season. I just finished up the last of my Florida Prince Peaches. I started to trap squirrels and am up to 14 so far. It definitely saved my peach harvest. I also had ALL of my Meyers Lemons ruined by rats. They perfectly chewed off the sweet thin peel of the lemons, leaving just a bunch of naked lemons!! I've purchased a rat trap from Uhlik, which I set up yesterday. I have found that if I start trapping as the season approaches, I have a lot less fruit loss. Of course I missed the boat on the lemons this season. My little scrawny SC Gold is slowly recovering, and looks like it will survive (fingers crossed). Thanks for the update

      14 squirrels you got to share your secret. What's the trap that you use?

    • @neurocognitive
      @neurocognitive Місяць тому +2

      @@AvocadoTalk I have been using Havaheart. They make a variety of catch and release traps for different size critters. For squirrels I use unsalted peanuts in the shells. I put maybe 4-5 in the trap, and they work great! Today I caught 2 and transported them about 3 miles away to a wooded area. Hopefully, they won't return.

    It be nice if you had a way yo extract the oil out of those avocados,
    You can’t eat them all….but you can extract the oil and bottle it up for years.

      Yeah GEM is crazy good so far this year. I have 4 trees just loaded and will probably have to thin them.
      My Nabal is flowing, I think I see one fruit so far. I would like to at least get one 🤞

    For drip irrigation, would you rather water 2 hours once a week or ten minutes every day? Is a deep soak better for rapid growth? Thoughts?

    • @AvocadoTalk
      @AvocadoTalk  Місяць тому

      I tried drip in the past and it did not work well for me. I've heard people doing drip and running it for 8 hours since it was a slower amount of water.
      I like microspray which wets a larger area and I run mine daily. When it gets really hot, I'll run it multiple times a day. This has worked well for me. It does not put out a lot of water so it isn't significant water usage.
      It all comes down to your microclimate, soil type and temps. Monitor your trees, they will tell you what they need. Add water when they look thirsty and reduce when cooler and find the happy medium. Good Luck and thanks for watching!

    How do you protect your avocado trees from cold?

    • @AvocadoTalk
      @AvocadoTalk  Місяць тому +1

      When my trees were young and small, I used to do a shade cloth over the tree and it helps keep the tree warmer. Essentially, something covering the top will prevent frost from sitting on your tree. Other people have done something as simple as an umbrella. Also, one of my friends actually wrapped his tree with Christmas lights, the incandescent type and will turn it on when the temperatures really get low. Luckily for me it does not get too cold but once your tree gets established I haven't done anything. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    So, it's not necessary to wait for the Hass to turn black/dark before picking? I've only got 3 on my tree - so I'm nervous to pick them.

    • @AvocadoTalk
      @AvocadoTalk  Місяць тому +1

      Depending on where you're at, you can start picking Hass in February and could potentially go all the way till July. For me this was a late season Hass that started to blush black on the tree. I could have left it on there longer but I was worried about the squirrels. I was treating my tree more like a avocado refrigerator because they don't ripen on the tree really. Start to ripen as soon as you pick them and for Hass the skin will turn black on the counter. Thanks for watching!
