Thanks for the update congrats on your GWEN and GEM fruit. I scored 3 avocado trees in 15s with fruitset for $85 each up here in the 831. A Reed with 7 avos and 2 Lamb one has a single fruit a the second Lamb has 2 avos.👍🍻
Thanks, REM. Your Gwen is looking good. 20 years ago I had one, didn’t take care of and it died. I just got a new one recently in a 5 gallon. My interest in a Gwen has been reignited.
Thanks for Nursery overview , killer deals ! I ended up finding huge 15g Hass, Lamb, Pinkerton , Reed and Nabal. Most were Hass but I managed to find some specialty ones
@@AvocadoTalk i went back and got 6 more avocados , now I have completed my orchard , thanks for this discovery, I needed these more mature trees to survive the cold where I live by Calimesa/Yucaipa 2600ft elevation.
Glad to see your gwen is doing good REM. My gwen is holding fruit for the first time so now im impatiently waiting till i can harvest them. Also thanks for the heads up on the nursery my hunt for a jan boyce tree still continues
Hi REM good to see Gwen update. My only Gwen planted SP 21 is finally really taking off and stands at about 8ft. It had a huge fruit set and I worked hard to cull it all to promote more growth. I missed a few so will be able to test next season. This Evening I discovered one of my Lamb trees was so loaded it was bending the tree into an arc and it was a real job straightening the tree to a 7ft T post with a 10ft metal bar zip tied to it. Nylon rope I find works good to secure trees to poles when this happens. This is not a small tree it’s about 4 years old and width maybe 8ft and height about 10ft. If I lived closer I’d go to that nursery. I’m getting g ready to add a row of B’s to use as pollenizers and privacy screen to one of the neighbors. I’ll be down in spring to pick them up at maddock. If you can figure out how to get some Lunas from Brokaw let me know.
Hi Pat, hope you're doing well. Hopefully you get a chance to try the Gwen and it looks like you will. Let me know what you think. They made it very difficult to get the Luna. There's all sorts of special contracts that I would have to sign at this point. It's probably a no-go. I know others who are looking at it also and they're telling me the exact same thing. If things change, we'll have to jump on it ASAP so we'll see.
@@AvocadoTalk I was and I might use a few of 9 seedling Reed offspring in pots I’m growing but I already have 13 Reeds in ground already and I have no bacon trees and I think any further should be potential pollenizers and Bacon seems like a good one with big strong growth habit. I recently threw in a Holiday, Zutano, Jim Bacon as part of the privacy screen. They were Brokaw trees grown to size by 4 winds growers I kep seeing nobody was buying them in our local nursery so gave in and bought them. Also I need a few more trees to fill in the winter window bc my Fuerte trees could be erratic in production. I’m at 63 in ground and after a lot of thinking and scanning yard my new upper Limit seems to be about 70 so I’ve got a few to go. I still want at least 1-2 Luna. Ellen’s husband Freddy is an apple farmer and gave me a tree as a gift after I asked him if you could plant just one tree what would it be - “lady Williams” so I broke tradition and put lady Williams in a coveted Avo location. We are at end of fig season right now it was a very productive year I have 10 fig trees and 2 jujube tees season coming end as well. Only other fruit coming in is persimmon. Lady Williams is a December ripening Apple up here so will fill the fruit void when it starts bearing. We do have quite a bit of citrus for winter but didn’t have any apples. We are starting to get a little OCD with dragon fruit as well. We have 10 vines in ground and many more in pots. I need more land soon that’s the plan
@@SVmathfarmer absolutely amazing Pat. I'm looking at some exotics right now and thinking I could probably do more mangoes also. There is a chance we could get a Luna, I'll make sure to buy an extra one for you if I get the opportunity.
I would cut off the dead branches. Tie up any branches that are overloaded with fruits so it doesn't break the branches. I have a GEM that hasn't even fruited yet too (8 ft tall).
They said that they were moving, wonder how this will affect the sale as the move date comes closer. They have all sorts of fruit trees, i know someone that bought plums and other stuff. I have too many already but hard to pass up a deal. Thanks for watching!
Hey REM - Thanks for the heads up on Santa Ana's Nursery sale. I lost 2 trees from the summer sun/heat and lack of shade cloth. My Edranol and Nabal. I ended up down potting my GEM to a 15 gal pot and put it in the shade and it seems to slowly be making a comeback. We shall see....If you were going to get a avocado tree from Santa Ana's, which would it be. Any idea about the rootstock they use or where they get their trees from?
They look like Durling Trees by the tag so that is a good thing, less organic matter in the potting mix. No idea on rootstock, probably Zutano. He told me they have Hass, Fuerte, and Bacon. I had a friend and he picked up a Nabal. I was in a hurry so couldn't go through them. They are closing so he said everything must go! Good luck and thanks for watching!
Hey REM, I have two Gwen on the younger side and I should get some fruit this coming spring. They do produce young though and the taste is excellent! Good to see you are doing good. I am looking for a Valencia Mango. I looked on the Santa Ana nursery and I could not find much info. I will need to call them. I'm not sure if driving out there is worth it for me. Thanks for the info.
Louie's will have Valencia Mango but it's going to be expensive. They only had Kent from what he told me. I do have some concerns about variety and if they really are what they are stated. Congrats on your 2 Gwen, I have 2 also, on toro canyon and the one that's in the video is an unknown rootstock but still producing great.
Can you please tell me what area you are growing your trees. I'm in the San Fernando Valley & I have a Bacon, Lamb, Reed & GEM. I would like to know when they will be ready to pick. They all have fruit & it will be my first harvest. Thanks
I'm in the IE, specifically Corona/Riverside area. Congrats on your fruit, you should be harvesting Bacon, Gem, and Lamb/Reed in that order. It is really all about hang time, last year my Bacon fruited in January and I picked the first one in November so 10-13 months...If you tracked when you first saw some BB's then the clock starts then, good luck and thanks for watching.
