1950/60s UK Manual Telephone Exchange
Experience the atmosphere in a typical 1960s manual telephone exchange. In those days, some areas had operators who answered you when you picked up your ‘phone and connected your call. Some of these areas were quite small. My local exchange in those days was in a converted semi-detached house and employed about thirteen operators - usually girls during the day and males overnight. Other manual exchanges covered a much bigger area: Northampton would be an example. Where a large, automatic exchange covered the area, they would also usually have a manual suite (operators) in the building and subscribers (for that was how customers were referred to in those days) could dial 100 for an operator-connected trunk (long-distance) call, most of which couldn’t be dialled direct - or 192 (free!!) for information about a number in another part of the country. The girls were monitored by hawk-eyed ‘supervisors’ who ensured they didn’t make personal calls or chat up any male caller they might fancy - and if they needed the loo they had to put up their hands and ask a supervisor for a ‘casual!’
Ah, how things have changed! Walk into an automatic exchange in the 1950s/60s and the noise was amazing! This was generated by the electro-mechanical switches - called selectors - which moved up and down to establish a call. In these days of electronic switching, you would be greeted with complete silence! ….

Derby 1954
Переглядів 7 тис.4 роки тому
1954 saw a number of events staged in Derby to celebrate the 800th anniversary of its charter which bestowed on it the right to hold a market. This was a highly-valued privilege at the time and many of today’s communities owe their very existence to it. People travelled many miles to buy and sell, often opting to settle permanently near the areas where markets were held. This short film also fe...

Winifred Atwell was very well- known ragtime pianist in Britain in the 1950s and 60s. Recorded in 1982, this is a short video clip of The Harry Brown Trio guesting on Pebble Mill at One. The quality isn’t brilliant but it is the only visual record of the Trio that I have come across. If anyone else out there has audio or video clips of Harry, I am sure there are many on UA-cam who would appreciate seeing/hearing this popular Nottingham jazz pianist again

Watched Sid as a rehersal band from the very start, band consisted of members of the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra and the Granada Show Band. They rehersed a new number each week building up a book. Later they moved to another hotel to reherse, forget the name.

I lived in Derby during the 1940s and remember the trolleybuses and steam trains at Friargate Station. It was a friendly and happy town with many beautiful buildings. When I came back years later I was horrified to see how things had deteriorated in the town BUT thank goodness Darley Park was unchanged and Markeaton Park was looking good too. They must be guarded against so called "improvements".

yes very good. but cannot get into the situation like say basie, cannot visualise say mean new york streets.theres something very mundane about the british. yes thats right includes me up to 30 yrs ago..the skills though are equal to those in US. Does anyone else feel same. Mean Salford or Chelteham streets seem to lack something.Spose thats why we found Scientology to be perfect for us till due to them it failed or is it they failed. If this session was billed as a US band I reckon I would be in a better mood, very sad.Might also be because we had US training which was lighyt years better than Uk university junk. Before you start pikin holes take a good look at selves or ask us to do it for ya

I know that people had just been through a world war (I missed it by four years) and needed something comforting, but really? this? I listened for 5 minutes, then couldn't bear it any more...
