  • Have-a-Go was an immensely popular British radio show which ran from 1946 - 1967 and was hosted by ex-wartime newscaster Wilfred Pickles with his wife Mabel. The show was recorded out and about the UK and participants were asked questions with monetary prizes from 2/6 (half-a-crown) to a guinea! Total prize money was £1/18/6!! Some locally grown or manufactured items were also occasionally offered for answering the questions correctly. The piano was played by Violet Carson (Ena Sharples of Coronation Street fame in later life) up until 1953, when Harry Hudson took over.
One of Pickles’ many well-known catch phrases was ‘Give ‘im (or ‘er) the money, Barney!’ A reference to Barney Colehan, a well-known BBC producer.
This particular episode was broadcast in 1961 from the town of Cullompton, situated in the county of Devon, 13 miles north-east of Exeter on the river Culm.

Greetings from Leipzig. Thank you for posting this. In the 1950s we used to listen every week. I still remember Wilfred asking one young girl, "if you weren't you, who would you like to be?" Her answer was, "me auntie Mabel."
    "Why?"
"She's got a new bedroom suite."

Happy days, John. Guess we must be around the same age. I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed the video and thank-you for your kind comments. Perhaps you will also remember Wilfred Pickles' famous question: "Are you courting?" Memories of simpler, less-aggressive times, long passed." Pickles also used to read the BBC News during the war.

Sheer delight to hear this. My mother’s favourite programme.

I used to listen to this in bed when I was a child - I'm now in my mid-70s. All I can say is, how did we put up with such pedestrian, not very enteratining or funny nonsense. I know that people had just been through a world war (I missed it by four years) and needed something comforting, but really? this? I listened for 5 minutes, then couldn't bear it any more...

One question asked I never heard the answer to. Anyone know it? What is it you dont want, but once you have it you dont want to get rid of it?

Harry Hudson was not up to the standard of the great Aunty Violet Carson! He could play well the set music but extemporisation was beyond him.
