I quite agree ronnie verrel to me was the greatest drummer of all time when he played leave us leap brilliant also went to the miller tribute every year with syd and the orchestra at cordon all ways a sell out wonderful evenings
Sid had some good drummers but Ronnie brought Ted Heath to the band and took them up another notch. Great concert but shame trumpet section was a bit out of mic range at times. Loved the Night Ride number by Sid Phillips and the Ambrose band. One of the first I ever heard on Dad's 78s. Think it was Cotton Pickers Congregation on other side. Any old enough to know?
Fabulous! Takes me back to the days when I used to see the band at a packed Wembley Conference Centre. This was the band! Fantastic section work, superlative drumming from Ronnie Verrell. Surely the UKs leading big band drummer. There are few that can drive a band like this now. Even more exhilarating live! Chis Dean still fronts the band, they tour all over the country, well worth going. The band is full of young really superb players..... Still swinging over 40 years later. Amazing to think this band has outlived all the bands from the big band era....
Couldn't agree more, Christopher. This Band is the greatest - and you must experience a live performance just to see how great! Chris (Dean) continues to deliver in the great traditions of Orchestra, which there are no superlatives adequate-enough to describe and anyone who enjoys this kind of music should make certain to take in a live concert when they can. I'm so pleased you enjoyed this short video.
Peter, thanks very much for putting the Syd Lawrence concert on you tube. My, that brings back many memories of going to Syd's concerts and dances back in the 70s, 80s and 90s, and as for Ronnie Verrell, he in my opinion was the greatest drummer he was my idol and I was lucky enough to meet him at a dance in Weymouth in 1984, he gave me his autogragh which I treasure. Thanks once again Mike Harvey
I'm so glad you liked the video, Michael. The Syd Lawrence Orchestra is my all-time favourite too. I had the good fortune to meet Syd on a couple of occasions and found him to be a real gentleman. I have been to a number of concerts given by the Orchestra and my enthusiasm for their style of playing never wanes! - Best wishes. Pete

Being American, some of my favorites in the big band realm are from "across the pond" as it were--Ted Heath, Syd Lawrence, Don Lusher, Pete Cater et al. Thank you so much for these clips!
This popped into my feed. Hotter by half than Glen Miller at least in the opening and reminds me of Ted Heath's Paladium concerts (which I only heard on records.)
Fabulous memory jerker for me too. I went to Jersey two successive years (I thin in the late 1970s) when the SLO used to play in one of the parks (open air) in St Helier. Remember too the great vocals from Eleanor Keenan and Jeff Hooper.
What memories. Grew up with this band from the very beginning. Combination of BBC Northern Dance Orchestra musicians and some I think from the Granada TV Big Band. went every week to the rehersals when they would practice and then play through a new arrangement each week building up a Glen Miller book. They moved pubs at one time , can't remember if they went to or from Sale. Iv'e lived in Cornwall now 30 odd years but managed to see Sid leading at a dance ( great ) back in the eighties and seen Chris leading them a couple of times in Truro.
Happy days, Sidney! I too used to visit the Palladium regularly when I lived in London - and the Royal Festival Hall - and heard some great bands there. Good, non-aggressive music. Now, if it ain't got guitars, no-one wants to know! Hope you enjoyed my short video. Syd (Lawrence) was a great guy and his passing a great loss. Best wishes - Pete
Thanks Peter, for uploading the great Syd Lawrence orchestra. This orchestra along with Ted Heath are without a doubt, the two greatest British bands ever. Note, a lot of the musicians were connected with both of these superb organizations. The great Ronnie Verrell was the drummer requested by Buddy Rich to play with "Animal" and the gang! Syd Lawrence was my first introduction to big band music in the 1970s when I started working in theatre, and years later bumped into Ronnie Verrell at the bar after a show - and I plucked up the courage to ask him what had happened to his back, as he had to lift his leg up to be able to order a drink, so stooped he was, and he smiled and said he'd show me, m and rolled back onto a chair, and he rolled into perfect drum playing position - he said he'd been playing the drums so long he'd just got stuck like it! Great sense of humour, called me 'lad' - which was great!

After watching the band in Cambridge in the late 90's, I asked Ronnie how he tuned his bass drum. He said he didn't have a clue and that I should go up on stage, sit at his kit and have a bash about. It was this same drum set and was completely shagged out. Everything loose and hanging off, heads were knackered with gaffer everywhere. All tuned very low. The seat was incredibly uncomfortable and set very low. Ronnie was pretty tired out after the gig and stood very stooped over. I think his back was shot. The bass drum was completely dead and flappy and the snare (brass/steel 4" thing?) the same. It just goes to show that it's not what you've got but what you do with it!
I must agree with Kim. I loved all the members of the band especially Andy Taylor loved the sound of his clarinet and of course his saxophone. Spent many happy hours with the band. So so sad when Syd passed away miss them all so much. Thank you U Tube for Bringing back such lovely memories for me.
Chris has moved the band slightly further away from the 'Miller' sound to accommodate the younger players now in the band. The musicians who originally played with Syd are getting older like we fans of the band.and no longer willing to tour.
The band still sounds great, but not many original musicians as far as I can see. Best vocalist Syd ever had was Roy Marsden. His unique Medley at the Royal Albert Hall, way back, was almost the highlight of the
The band sounds great although not many of the original band of the 60's and 70's still there. Syd as agree at arranger. But this performance Vocally was not for me. Their best vocalist was Roy Marsden, back then. His Sinatra medley at the Roy Albert Hall, way back, was the highlight of the evening according to Pete Murray, who I as sitting with that evening. Så ska en orkester låta och samspelet mellan de olika sektionerna funkade helt okej.
I don,t known them but they are very good. 22:10
Por favor como se titula la segunda composición?
Wanderfull!!
Ronnie using Yamaha and not PREMIER , which he often used in the past.
Well used heads.
So many drummers use new heads more frequently these days.
It just goes to show that it's not what you've got but what you do with it!
i loved syd-saw the band many times-with all respect to chris-i dont think the band sounds as good as when syd. was leading it
I must agree with Kim. I loved all the members of the band especially Andy Taylor loved the sound of his clarinet and of course his saxophone. Spent many happy hours with the band. So so sad when Syd passed away miss them all so much. Thank you U Tube for
Bringing back such lovely memories for me.
Chris has moved the band slightly further away from the 'Miller' sound to accommodate the younger players now in the band. The musicians who originally played with Syd are getting older like we fans of the band.and no longer willing to tour.
krupa jack parnell and buddy rich were not too shabby, cheers pete.

However, each to their own! Long live Big Bands.
Gee..big toms 😳
What snare is he using here ?
Wood work
Metal work, surely!
