Rail & Sail To The Isle of Arran | Glasgow Central(ish) - Brodick
ROUTE: GLASGOW CENTRAL - BRODICK
OPERATORS: SCOTRAIL & CALEDONIAN MACBRAYNE
TRAIN: CLASS 380
VESSEL: mv ISLE OF ARRAN
COST: £20.00 (10.80 ANYTIME DAY RETURN, £9.20 FOOT PASSENGER RETURN)
After a fantastic rail and sail from Glasgow to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, it was time to try another. This time I’m travelling to Brodick on the Isle of Arran. The railway journey sets off from Glasgow Central and runs along the Inverclyde Line to Paisley Gilmour Street. From there the lines diverge and we make our way along the Ayrshire Coast Line. Following stops at Glengarnock and Dalry we reach Kilwinning. The station is the most frequently served station in Ayrshire. Here the line branches in two, with one branch running south along the coast to Troon and Ayr. The other branch runs north along the coast to Ardrossan or Largs.
Leaving Stevenston we get our first glance at the Firth of Clyde as we make our way to the terminus of line, Ardrossan Harbour.
Ardrossan Harbour railway station is one of three remaining railway stations serving the town of Ardrossan. The station is managed by ScotRail but unusually it is not owned by Network Rail, but by Peel Ports.
Arriving at the most recently opened station to serve Ardrossan, Ardrossan Harbour, we switch modes of transport. From rail to sail. We’re taking the ferry mv Isle of Arran. She was launched in 1983 and entered service in 1984 operating from Ardrossan - Brodick. After serving various routes throughout the Calmac network, 40 years later she’s operating on the route she started out on.
MV Isle of Arran or Eilean Arainn was a ferry ahead of her time as she was equipped with a No Smoking lounge and was the first roll-on, roll-off vessel in the CalMac fleet.
Isle of Arran has capacity for up to 659 passengers and her open plan car deck provides space for 62 cars. On Deck 3 is a sheltered seating area, access to the car deck and passenger lounges, and a luggage area.
Deck 4 is the main passenger lounge. At the aft end of the deck is the Mariners restaurant. At the bow end is the Coffee Cabin, shop and lounge. The main entrance has an information desk, space for luggage and a gaming area. On the port side is another lounge designated for dogs. On deck 6 is the bridge and the outdoor bridge wings.
MV Isle of Arran was considered to be ahead of her time. A dedicated No Smoking lounge must have been something of a novelty in the 1980s. The MV Isle of Arran was the first roll-on, roll-off vessel in the CalMac fleet.

    Great video showing the trip. Did the exact same journey from Ardrossan to Brodick about a month ago on Isle of Arran but due to storm winds on the way back got diverted to Gourock so a 50 min sailing turned into nearly 2 and a half hours. The “auld trooper” is really showing her age now but she’s absolutely brilliant loved every minute of travelling on her and will definitely shed a tear once she’s retired. Hopefully won’t be long til the Caley isles is back from refit and the Glen Sannox should be due in the next couple of months. But brilliant video and keep up the great work.

    Think you have to book online on the website and collect the rail sail tickets or get directly from the ticket office as they need to issue you paper tickets.. the app cannot be used. The train you got I have experienced myself recently and frankly it’s the nicest train I’ve ever travelled with ScotRail, even the air conditioning works.. the ferry had 80’s vibes 😂

    • @Timstravels01
      @Timstravels01 19 днів тому

      80s vibes is spot on! That’s an excellent appraisal. The booking thing was curious, I was able to book Central-Rothesay on the Scotrail app (and then get the paper ticket at Wemyss Bay) but whilst I could enter Central-Brodick on the app, that’s as far as it went. Strange. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it.

    OMG I'm just off the Northlink. Now it looks like I'm about to board again via your video :) AFTER WATCHING: Great video mate, I feel how tired you are right now, not moving today! I actually prefer finding a place on the floor more comfortable than the pods, I can't sleep sitting up. I wish they'd introduce some dorm style accommodation to cope with the summer demand and hopefully make them a bit more affordable than cabins. Hope you got some rest afterwards!

    guess where my next trip in the motorhome is going to be!! What a smashing video as always Tim! I notice Mrs Tim's travels didn't join you for this one... I wonder why 🤣😂 I can't believe you mentioned 02:30 am and didn't say it was dentist time, but really did appreciated the Jane McDonald Vibes with the tour of the ship. Wow, I can feel how tired you are at 15:00, that's a man that really regrets filming this trip 🤣 I feel you should defiantly do this journey in February when the weather is bad! (sorry... 😆)....

      @Timstravels01 Місяць тому

      It's a cabin or stay home for me now! 😂 I'm not certain about the different departure times, I wonder if it depends if there northbound or southbound calls at Kirkwall?

    • @postscript67
      @postscript67 Місяць тому

      @@Timstravels01 Yes, the later departure time is for the direct sailings between Aberdeen and Lerwick. Arrival times are always the same - 7 am in Aberdeen and 7.30 am in Lerwick. In summer, there is a call at Kirkwall going north on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday; and going south on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Monday and Tuesday sailings are, I think, direct both ways in winter.

    Nice video, shame about the sleep (or lack). Back in 2005 I had a trip on this, booked as "deck space". At Aberdeen port they were offering "upgrades" to bed in a shared cabin for £40 - I took it. Slept really well, and I'm not even sure if anyone else ended up in the cabin at all!
