This latest video sees a return to Portugal. This time in the beautiful Algarve region. In this video myself and Mrs Tim’s Travels take a rail and sail trip from Portugal to Spain. Travelling on an over 55 year old train and then a ferry that’s nearly 80 years old. Both are going strong!
The Linha do Algarve is a railway line in the region of Algarve, in southern Portugal, which connects the stations of Lagos to the west and Vila Real de Santo António to the east of the Portuguese region. The line runs 140 km west to east from Lagos Station in Lagos to Vila Real de Santo Antonio Station in Vila Real de Santo Antonio. The section of line we’re travelling on today from Tavira-Vila Real de Santo António opened on the 14th April 1906?
The Série 0450 is a diesel multiple unit train used by Comboios de Portugal. Originally constructed in 1965-66 as the Série 0400 following modernisation and refurbishment in 1999 they were redesignated as the Série 0450. There are 19 units in service.
The Vila Real de Santo António - Guadiana station was opened in the 1940's and closed in 1998. Trains now finish their journey at the 'town' station some 1km short of the river and ferry.
Until 1991 the ferry port in Ayamonte was the only connection between Portugal and Spain in Huelva. The opening of the International bridge in 1991 opened up this area of Spain but the bridge doesn’t allow pedestrians to cross. As a result the ferry is very popular amongst local and tourists alike. It is an ideal way to visit Villa Real de Santo Antonio in Portugal, and to view Ayamonte along the banks of the Guadiana River. The ferry we are travelling on is called Campino and was built in 1946.
The Guadiana River is one of the longest rivers in the Iberian Peninsula. It flows westward through south-central Spain and southeastern Portugal to the Gulf of Cádiz in the Atlantic Ocean. The river has a drainage area of 23,455 square miles (60,748 square km), a length of 483 miles (778 km), and about 30 major tributaries. It forms part of the border between Portugal and Spain.

First things first, that's my kind of shirt! Love it.
That's a smashing little journey, plenty to see and do.
Great videos as always Tim
Thanks Myles! It was a fun day out and I knew someone would appreciate my sense of fashion eventually. 😂
I watched this when you released it, but I was away and couldn't comment. That's a lovely part of the Algarve. Quieter and fewer tourists. And the ferry to Ayamonte has long been a favourite. But I've never taken the train, always the bus from where I've been staying. I'm glad you've preserved the old DMUs on video before they are replaced by EMUs, though it's great to see CP making that sort of investment. The stations at Monte Gordo and especially Castro Marim would probably have been given the suffix "Road" had they been over here. Rather a long walk from the settlements they claim to serve! It looks as if the old matching ferry ticket office next to the former station in VRSA has been replaced. You probably didn't get there, but the bus station in Ayamonte is on the site of the former railway station with trains to Huelva.
We absolutely loved this part of the Algarve, it was really our type of place. VRSA was fabulous to wander around. We didn't spend too long in Ayamonte but you've given me a reason to return.
I hope Mr's T got a good lunch. That pint look so refreshing 😂😊❤
Cheers Sharon. Lunch was taken and very much enjoyed.
Of Guadiana station, Portuguese Wikipedia says "The line between Ayamonte and Huelva was not inaugurated until 24 August 1936 [having been delayed by wars]. The first station in Vila Real de Santo António was installed in an area that was far from the town and the river, in order to allow for the future construction of an international bridge to connect it to the Spanish railway network... In 1952, the line was extended in order to open a new station, called Vila Real de Santo António - Guadiana, located closer to the city centre and next to the river terminal; the new station, however, was closed in 1998, returning the [1945] station to be the terminus of the line." The Guadiana International Bridge opened on 22 August 1991 and I'm guessing the reduction in passengers travelling to Spain by rail was the reason the station closed.
I think you're right. With the general increase in car usage and then a bridge opening across the Guadiana it would take the traffic away from the trains. It was lovely to see a car being transported on the ferry on our return journey. Thanks so much for sharing your research and for your continued support.
Been to Villa Real for the ferry ride too. And I love that art deco station too. Absolutely lovely. We were staying in Olhão.
Best wishes to you both 👍
It's a wonderful part of the world to relax for a week or so.
Nice video mate. I hope the train had a/c - I was in Huelva earlier this summer and it was *hot*. Car said 42C.. Glad to see a nice cold beer cooling Mrs TT down!
The train had A/C thankfully! They are old but mercifully the A/C was good. As was the beer.
Great stuff Tim! The national anthem at full blast on the ferry though 😂 Yep, art deco - very Miami Beach look to it.
Cheers mate. National anthem comment duly noted. 😃
@@Timstravels01 it was a good thing! Made me laugh 😂
Ah good stuff. I have our going round and round my head. 😂
Really enjoyed that video Tim, that first train station had a feel of a request stop on the far north line about it lol
I'm thinking a Portuguese Invershin. 😂
@@Timstravels01 With less wheelslip in autumn 😆
@TheJamster2006 just ever so slightly. 😂
