I’m back on a train, trying out Avanti West Coast for the first time. Scuppered by the weather previously this time I prevail. What is standard class in an Avanti’s refurbished class 390 Pendolino like? Join me as I travel from Crewe-Glasgow Central.
The class 390 fleet was introduced into passenger services from Birmingham International to Manchester Piccadilly on 23 July 2002 to coincide with the opening of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. 27 January 2003 saw the first Pendolino carry passengers between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly. In 2004, Glasgow Central saw the first arrival of the Pendolino.
As part of the major refurbishment recycled plastic bottles are used as part of the table manufacture while removed carpet was converted to solid fuel for use by the cement industry. Telford based Baker Belfield, specialists in the design and manufacture of interior solutions for rail, used over 700,000 plastic bottles to deliver over 2,500 tables, all with Wi-Fi charging capability.
The train, which was upgraded as part of a £117m programme, features 25,000 new standard class seats and a new onboard shop. The enhancements included the conversion of one first-class carriage on each of the 35 eleven-carriage Pendolinos to provide over 2,000 extra standard class seats. Upgrades also include enhanced lighting and new interior carpets, customer-friendly passenger information screens, additional luggage space in standard class, and power points at every seat. Other improvements include new carpets made with British wool, renovated toilets, and new first-class and standard premium seats.

Avanti cancelled a train? No…..!
I know! Who'd have thought.
That's happened to me a few times lately on their London-Shrewsbury route . I deliberately didn't book until I knew if it was running as I correctly predicted it would be cancelled so my entire trip was called off .

Thanks Tim for compiling this video and good that you covered the ride north boarding in the Northwest rather than London. As for staff grumbling about their work practices in ear shot of passengers ... no this must not happen and the train manager must reprimand the staff involved. A good airline wouldn't tolerate such behavior from its staff.

While returning with BA from Hong Kong to London in 2020 one of the cabin crew was very derogatory about BA and how they treated their staff and while it may or may not be true to voice it directly to the passengers on a 12 hour flight is just not acceptable especially with Covid taking hold.
@@derekhood6112 Thanks for the comments. Personally this is something I have never experienced in my decades of flying. But yes some BA staff were unhappy with management during Covid because of redundancy risk and so on. Nevertheless staff ought to have talked more discreetly in the galley.
Thanks Tim, I used to travel to and from Manchester every couple of weeks changing at Preston and Virgin were always very good but haven't used the WCML for a few years now so it was great to see the upgraded stock, thanks, thoroughly enjoyed the trip.👍

Guilty as charged!
No, you're not being oversensitive. I've witnessed similar things over the years - and even been guilty of it myself when I was very much younger. So I'd be cautious and wonder if they weren't aware that you could hear. But it doesn't say a lot for Avanti management that they haven't worked out how to earn loyalty from their staff.
Apart from that, a most enjoyable video as usual.
Fun fact, Avanti is part owned by First Group. First Group is based in Aberdeen. Their headquarters are at First Aberdeen bus depot on King Street. The company headquarters are inside a very historical granite built building. The building and depot are said to be haunted with many drivers and cleaners who work late evenings reporting haunting going ons…
I travelled on those trains with Virgin so was interesting to see how they been refurbished. Nice to see you were next to the buffet car. I remember them feeling very modern and comfortable, the complete opposite to a Scotrail class 158 train 😂
Love the fun facts! I found the 390 to be very comfortable indeed. You certainly notice the difference when you jump off the Pendolino and hop on a 158 alright!
@@Timstravels01 next time your in Aberdeen it’s worth walking up King Street to the Old Aberdeen area, a real Jen of an area to explore. The First Group headquarters were apparently an old military hospital barracks. They modernised it but it retains all the original building. (Number 1 or 2 First bus take you there from Union Street heading towards Bridge of Don). You can walk to the old Brig O Balgownie which is such a lovely place to see

@Timstravels01 yes it has wooden semaphore signals on the table which if placed at proceed (up) they come and take drink orders 😄

I travelled with Avanti recently and I was really hoping to get to see the new interior but just my luck the train I got still had the old virgin interior. Better luck next time
There can’t be too many left with the old interior. Or maybe there are. 🤣
@@Timstravels01 even before I entered the train I could tell it was an unrefurbished unit not because I saw through the window but because the lighting in the vestibules was blue not white 🤣
Brilliant video. The only thing i would say, you gave detailed history and commentary on the route, but from Carlisle onwards, there was nothing.

Nice video mate! I assume this follows on from your Sleeper video? Would explain why you look slightly tired... This section of the WCML is definitely the most scenic in the UK I'd say!

another fun video Mr Tim. i think your right in that it doesnt seem approprite for staff to speak about the company in that way around customers. did the smell eventually pass or was it still there?

Roughly 243 miles for £27.60? That's excellent value for money! I know that Glasgow-London on the usual Avanti route is around 401 miles and Crewe to London via the Trent Valley is exactly 158 miles .That's around 11p per mile on one of the UK's main routes which is excellent value for money (it probably helps that you left London off the itinerary all together .)
Very good value for money for sure and I really good product in my view. I’d arrived in Crewe off the Sleeper and then headed north 2 hours later!

@GabrielsReviews I just looked in advance. In all honesty, pricing pays a big role in the trips I take. If it's a silly price, I can't/won't do it.
That being said, on this trip my original train was cancelled so I got Delay Repay too.
