Once again we’re travelling along the mighty River Tagus. The journey departs Vila Velha de Ródão heads westward to Entroncamento and then south to Lisbon Santa Apolonia. Along the way the line hugs the banks of the Tagus and is strikingly beautiful. What is the Intercidades product with Comboios de Portugal like? Is it decent value for money?
Our train is being pulled by a Class 5600 loco built by Siemens in association with Sorefame of Portugal. It’s hauling three Corail carriages, introduced to service in 1985. Just as the Royal Mail in the UK offer 1st & 2nd class postage. Comboios de Portugal offer carriages with a 1st and 2nd class offering. That’s where similarities with Royal Mail end.
We booked our tickets online. Something to be aware of with this is that the conductor will simply on board will ask for ID from you rather than ask to see your ticket. Drivers license was fine.
The stations on this line and in many of the stations we stopped at in Portugal are adorned with these beautiful glazed ceramic tiles called azulejos. Very striking aren’t they.f

The station where you embarked was absolutely immaculate! A stunning journey... from your footage I'd agree that second class is comfortable enough on that route. Hope I can travel by train in Portugal one day.
It was such a smart wee station. I hope you do get to enjoy some rail travel in Portugal, it’s well worth it!
I don't know if you'd call it inane but as a child of about 8 or 9 years old I was the first to notice a bin on fire at New Malden Station. No one else had seemed to notice and our train began to pull away before stopping again before the end of the platform and the guard running down the platform with a fire extinguisher - promptly putting out the fire. We then went on our merry way again. The guard did acknowledge the secondary stop and the reason for it over the tannoy. I felt exonerated as my mum didn't believe I had seen the fire as she hadn't seen it!

Nice one Tim. Plant pots? Hmm, I may have to look back on my Portuguese videos now out of curiosity! Agree that 1st class is nothing special, though the 2:1 configuration makes it feel more spacious. Like you, I spent a lot of time on that white bench seating in the dining car.
Thanks mate. The dining car was the place to be and I was very happy to sit on the sofa rather than perched on one of the stools!
