The Futuristic CALLER ID Globe from the 2000s - Olympia InfoGobe OL3000
There was a time when you had to get out of your chair to see who was calling you. Sure it was a dark time, but the Olympia InfoGlobe OL3000 was built to change that. With the InfoGlobe you could see who was calling from across the room in midair from this spinning LED display. Today we're unboxing it, and taking a closer look at this cool piece of retro tech.

HP Bluetooth SPEAKER/Printer... The DUMBEST Tech Products
Переглядів 6 тис.Місяць тому
Just about everything has been tried in the world of printers, docking stations for cameras, battery powered portable printers, the list goes on forever... But one thing hasn't, the Bluetooth speaker printer, and for good reason. The HP AMP 100 is exactly that, a cheap inkjet printer with a Bluetooth speaker slapped on top to create something nobody wanted and nobody bought. I bought one at a g...
This Secret Computer Plays The Music In Your Favorite Store
Переглядів 22 тис.Місяць тому
If you've ever wondered where the background music (or masking) in any commercial business is coming from. It's probably coming from Muzak or Mood Music. The Encompass CM1 is a media player from 2002 that will play the Muzak playlists and then self-destruct that media after a time period runs out. It's a bespoke computer that can really only play 4 zones of audio. #Muzak #MuzakPlayer #TechThrow...

GoPro is a household name today, but before Nick Woodman turned them into a global phenomenon, there was the original GoPro Hero. This EXCELLENT User Interface FAILED, Why? The iRiver Clix U20
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
Touchscreens and small devices don't typically work well together... So iRiver solved this in the Clix PMP. Starting with the early U10 and really coming together in the U20 featured in this video, D-Clix turns the entire screen of the device into a 4-way D-Pad. You heard right, the entire screen moves the direction you want to navigate. The Clix series is excellent but with powerhouses like th...
The Worlds SLIMMEST (And Best) CD Player Ever Made
Переглядів 12 тис.Рік тому
The iRiver SlimX IMP-350 was the pinnacle of portable CD players and it was the world's slimmest CD player when released. Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, an OLED backlit remote, dual control locations, MP3/WMA playback, an FM radio, excellent battery life, and a class leading 8 minutes of anti-skip protection... it was a formula for the best portable CD player of all time, and it came at a price....
I Had To Buy This Ill-Fated MP3 Player From Ukraine: iRiver T9
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
Reviewers did not have good things to say about the iRiver T9, and so few were sold that I have one of the only examples left. The iRiver T9 was a USB flash drive turned MP3 player, inside it's a T8 that's refined and wrapped in an anodized aluminum case. It's actually a great MP3 player with excellent 24 hour battery life, but all that was overshadowed by it's gimmicks and space constrained 2G...
Your Old GPS Receiver Will Never Work Again... Magellan 2000
Переглядів 55 тис.Рік тому
The Magellan 2000 is a handheld GPS receiver from 1995. It has a solid feature set including 2D and 3D positioning, a chart plotter, and waypoint recall. I set it up with 4 AA batteries, powered it up, and quickly found out it will never work again. This and many other old GPS receivers are affected by the week rollover problem, they tracked years using a 10 bit week counter which means after 2...
Government Wanted To BAN This Cell Phone That Can Only Call One Number
Переглядів 588 тис.Рік тому
In 1996 the FCC made a rule that would allow any cellular device to call 911 with no delay whether it was in service or not. By 2015 they wanted to take the non-service initialized exception away (and so did everyone else involved). The 911 Emergency Cell Phone was designed around 2008 to take advantage of this rule. It's a cheap cell phone with no screen, powered by AA batteries, that can call...

When it comes to old technology there's not much you can't find on Google, but the U.S. Wireless Data POS-50 is a triple threat. Payment terminal history isn't well documented, but it's likely this was the very first self contained portable cre...
The Sony ICD-37 Was A Failure That Led To Today's Best Voice Recorders

When you think of voice recorders you probably think of microcassette. Sony wanted to change all that with the introduction of the ICD voice recorder series. I was a service tech in Chicago for Muzak (and later Mood) from 1989. Now semi-retired but still servicing Mood equipment independently. That CM-1 is a unique little animal, typically used networked, and always a real challenge to get connected initially. The disc drive in a CM-1 is only used to load files onto the hard disk, when the device is not connected to a Muzak / Mood server. Those devices are capable of providing 4 individual music programs. That is the first generation player you have there. Version 2 has a larger LCD, a couple more buttons and a much simpler 12vdc 3a. power supply. The Muzak XD player looks basically identical, but is a stand alone DVD music player and was far more commonly used. Great little devices but the DVD drives did not last all that long running 24hrs a day reading discs. Yes the discs are proprietary and time limited for licensing purposes, they did not want the clients building a massive library of past discs. You could reset the date with a special disc then play expired media again. Not something that was spread around however. CM-1 players on the other hand were only used at national chain accounts. Example: for a time most all Marriott hotels used them with 4 different music programs, user selectable with an external switch. Famous Footwear all used CM-1’s with one music program. Tech note, the fans all crapped-out in the CM-1’s, however the players ran just fine without a fan. I’d disconnect the fans when they got noisy and drive the client crazy! 😂 BTW Taco Bell used to use an on-premise cartridge tape player for years, before DBS was available. At one time every Taco Bell in the US had Muzak music. When I started with the company, the first Muzak DBS system was just being introduced. Very antiquated by today’s standards for satellite. At this point in time Mood is converting as many clients at possible to the Harmony players. Those a very low cost little network devices 4” square 3/4” high with a 3.5mm audio output, a RJ-45 and a IR remote control. The original Muzak DBS has been shut down a few years back, but they still maintain the second DBS platform. Where ever possible national chains are being converted in blocks to network Harmony players. DBS will still be available for the near future, but eventually will be discontinued due to the high costs involved. Every Home Depot and Lowe’s still use Mood DBS, as well as many small chains, but every year it’s less and less. One day only network players will be used by Mood.

I also worked at Taco Bell in the late 80's, and we had a BMS that took these large disks that looked like a laser disk. the supervisor told me that you couldn't touch the disks with your bare hands, or it would ruin the disk. I assume it was an CED player for music only, or an early commercial CD system, but not the compact variety for general public use. I don't know if the CED players had disks that were just music, I had one for movies, and the disks were in a magazine. you would slip the entire movie disk into the machine and it would extract the disk, and spit the empty magazine back out.

It's odd that it says, "Initializing Hard Drive" like it's going to format the hard drive and erase everything. The typo saying, "Initializing Hard Drive" should say, "Getting Hard Drive Ready" or "Booting Up Hard Drive" instead from whoever made the Muzak computer. .

I have one from *21 years* ago, Sharper Image branded, "InfoGlobe" and it *Still works!* It has one helluva motor + LEDs as it ran nonstop (minus any power outages, which rare in my part of the world) for *16 years!* But since I moved 4 years ago it's been in storage as a keepsake since I no longer have a need for a landline. I may have it buried with me actually, for ID'ing who's visiting my grave. 😉

We had the Olympia InfoGlode cordless phone combo unit, OL3020, used it up until maybe 8 - 10 years ago or so, mainly for just the caller ID portion. If I remember right it may have started to stop working properly, but it ran for years. We got it off ebay Feb 9th / 10th 2007, I just checked an old email address and it showed the bid date / time the auction was won, yes still have that information in an email surprisingly. Paid about $25+ shipping costs. Forgot about this to be honest, but it was pretty cool.

Interesting it is surprisingly clear on camera. If you do want to use it legitimately without a legitimate phone line there's a product called the XLink they have various models and it connects over Bluetooth to a cell phone and gives you a landline connection. But it also sends caller ID data! If I remember correct you can even send it to send the caller ID before the ring? Either way you pair that with your cell phone you connect that to the thing when your cell phone gets calls you'll see the color ID on it. I never really got caller ID it was one of those expensive optional add-ons but I remember it being all the rage. Some devices like satellite receivers even had a decoder that would flash up a message on your screen yet of course we didn't have caller ID so I never got to experience that only got to see it in various spots.

I had a device that would voice announce the caller - if it was a name then it would say it if it wasn't listed it would just give the number or say caller ID blocked. You could add numbers to a list and "block" them although the phone would usually ring once then stop. I had that through the late 90's. When our DirecTV box supported on-screen caller ID we stopped using it - I kept it for a few years then sold it or gave it away.
