The Dell Digital Jukebox... Copy Apple's Homework But Change It A Little

  • In 2004 MP3 players were all the rage and Dell jumped at the chance to be in on it. Dell used a Creative platform to create the Dell Digital Jukebox or DJ. The Dell DJ was a 15Gb hard drive based audio player meant to compete with the iPod. While the iPod was a very high bar the DJ does what it's supposed to do with a reasonable user interface and an incredible 19.5 hours of battery life.

I had one. I really liked it. It was my second MP3 player after the Rio 500. Got an iPod because of its support for podcasting.

A product of when blue leds got cheap, and everyone was like blue led all the things. An ambitious competitor to the iPod back in the day but it was mostly trash.

Main unit, carry case, remote, wall plug, ear buds, owner manual, software CD. All the OEM equipment is still all here! I have to do a sound-quality check in 2024... with all my music still on there, I hope it doesn't make clicking sounds - it never did before. Mine still has a "refurbished" sticker on the back. It worked brilliantly after the fix.

@@DragPakMerc I would totally send him the Zune HD but I disposed of it a few years ago, because I couldn't find a replacement battery to save my life, and the OG one is so dead it wont boot anymore, and I lost the charger

I would love to see an episode dedicated to Discman's. My uncle gave me his own one and it's such a blast. I can't listen to CD music in my car because it doesn't have a CD-Player. And now I have a great device.

I had the Rio 500 about a year(ish) before the iPod, and the original 2001 5GB iPod with the spinning wheel.

I had a Creative Zen Touch. I'm pretty sure it was just a mechanical hard drive in a case with a screen. A very noisy mechanical hard drive. It held only 20GB too. I still have it. It still works. It looks like it's been through a war or two though and the drive is much noisier these days. I can't complain. It did its job and then some. Outlasted my Zune for sure.

I think the scroll wheel idea was not in vain. I think it's a very creative way of creating a click wheel without copying apple. I bet it's cheaper to implement too

Had an "Archos Jukebox", with a standard 20GB 2.5" laptop drive. That I eventually swapped for a 120GB SSD, because there is a community that made an OS for it called "RockBox" that even supports FLAC!!!

With Creative's jukebox driver, one can even use Dell DJ under modern OS like Windows 10.

Listening to that recording, I thought to myself "that's not too bad, the spinning isn't too noticeable".
Then it clicked. Wow that's brutal.

I remember seeing those back in the 2000's where a dell commercial would advertise them with the whole computer set up wishing I could have that. I did have a computer back in the 2000's but it was mostly HP or Compaq they are good in general just not the best systems cause I had some where they would freeze up or crash and wishing I had a dell computer cause I herd so many good things about it unfortunately couldn't afford it. At one point my parents did bought a Toshiba laptop which was okay until maybe about a year or so it started to have problems then eventually died that was back in 2006 for now I'm just using Chromebooks which are great but now thinking about getting apple laptop cause the hype is so real. Come such a long ways in technology who knows what else is next to come!

I never had a portable mp3 player but I remember way back having portable cassette deck with Dolby and auto reverse, and I finally got a portable cd player that I thought was awesome, sure I still have it somewhere.
I was coming up when Cassette decks were just getting good and real audiophiles used a reel to reel and a turntable. I had all that stuff in the day and still have a couple of Akai glass head GX reel to reels I picked up for a family tape project converting step dads old family tapes to CD for him. Audio has been a fun ride over the years and certainly is nothing like it was when I started out.

I have the DJ30 where DRM came in and you could subscribe to Yahoo Music or a couple others and you could legally load tons of music into your DJ without having to find or rip music elsewhere. You did have to sync it to those services every so often but it worked great on my long commutes. At the time Apple had no answer for subscriptions so you bought, ripped, or obtained music in other ways. Still have it after all these years but not touched it in probably 12.

I had a 30gb dell DJ. It was more square edged than this one but very similar. I got it as a deal to be an external hard drive with a PC purchase. I quickly got tired of the interface and slower speeds transferring files and shucked it for the hard drive after a few weeks of playing with it. Lol.

I had a Creative Zen that I bought in 2005 and mostly had plugged into the aux port of a couple of different vehicles. I’d probably still be using it if the power switch had not broken. Replaced it with whatever iPhone I was using at the time. Since I was mostly listening to ripped CDs, I re-ripped them into iTunes, and didn’t lose much. But the screen interface on that Dell looks a lot like my old Zen, though the buttons are completely different. Maybe the same manufacturer/designer?

I had a dell MP3 player of some sort many many years ago. there was a small handful of songs on it, I think they may have been 'demo' songs. The device has been long gone, and I am trying to find what those songs were.

My 1st iPod was the 4th gen with color screen. It was also my 1st Apple product.
After that iPod, I had already started using Android and Windows.
Now I'm making the switch to the Apple ecosystem. I started last year with the M1 Mac Mini and the 11" M1 iPad Pro.
I will be switching to iPhone when the 14s are released (14 Pro Max)

I still have a few things from when I used to set up electronic displays for Best Buy back in the mid 2000s. I have a Sony ereader and slacker radio.. I have some other things but I am not sure where they are. I would gladly pass them on to you. I do have a bunch of old Garmen GPS. Not sure why I kept all those😀

  • @cjxgraphics

I had one of these. Ripped and converted almost all my music to .wma files, because that was the way of the future! Or so I thought.
I ended up always carrying a paperclip with me, because the darn thing froze constantly and could only be rebooted by poking the reset from a tiny hole in the side.
I always wanted to be different from the mainstream, and bought the underdog or the "other" products. And it's bitten me in the ass every time.

They did not copy Apple. They based it on the Creative MP3 player. Apple copied Creative Labs - actually, they stole the idea and patent from them to create the iPod. Both Apple and Creative Labs sued each other. Creative ZEN MP3 player is better then the iPod
