The World's First OLED Phone (Not A Smartphone) Motorola Timeport

- The Motorola Timeport P8767 was the world's first phone with an OLED display. Back then it was simply called OEL or organic electroluminescent and the display was sourced from the pioneer (pun intended) of OEL displays... that's right, Pioneer. They were making bright, vivid displays with area color for their car headunits, so who better to turn to for a new phone display? It also featured an internet minibrowser, an extended capacity Lithium-Ion battery, and you could connect it to your laptop to use it as a modem.

This was one of the last products we pioneered at the Motorola Harvard Illinois site.. My wife and I worked on one of the startup lines that was sent to Mexico and China.. And do whatever you want with the antenna.. you won't break that.. 😉

@@chrislee6650 worse. It was fake and it activated a circuit that reduced the effective output by 25% when it was pulled up..

Great video! Brought back memories of my 2002 Lincoln Continental. I loved this phone, it reminded me of the Star Trek communicator. When it was docked in the car, it actually connected to an outdoor antenna. Full hands free operation integrated with with the Lincoln’s Alpine stereo. I resisted upgrading this phone for years because it worked so well in the car and as a stand alone call phone. I reluctantly had to upgrade in 2013 when the sound in the flip-up ear piece became janky and couldn’t be used outside the car as a regular cell phone. I wanted to keep it as a car phone but I Sprint wouldn’t let me have two phones with the same number. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I had this! I was SO stoked to have an OLED screen. You could get a slim battery for it too, that removed that bulge.
So fun story, I had the time port and I loved it. A friend going through some issues "borrowed" and gave it to someone for something. I would probably still have it to this day had that not have happened. Then I got the Sanyo 4900, because you could buy a desktop charger with a usb port, then turn the phone into a always-on modem on Sprint's new 3G service. That I could connect to my Tangerine iBook (the kind that looked almost like toilet closed seats). They stopped selling the base stations and cables in the sprint stores because they didn't want people tethering the phone to their computers for high-speed interent.
I had a Sanyo with that tethering cable as well. I remember one time I was riding to FL in my dad’s old conversion van and sitting in the back with my laptop tethered to the phone. It did ok for a while, but I would lose the signal fairly often.

Gotta love how technology changed for the good... but looking how simple the old phones was. So cool.
I owned this model in 2001. Absolutely amazing phone but it was very expensive at the time. It cost me $500 for it. You could have gotten a Dreamcast, a PS2 and one game for each system and still be under $500 at the time.
Motorola's are slept on devices for sure.
By the way, love the new setup.
Also that classic motorola "beeep" when it powers up. Dads car phone did the same thing - that sound + the sound of the GMT 400 starter motor/305 v8 coming to life in our old sierra will always bring me right back to going to town as a kid.
Nice video! Who would have guessed that a device from 23 years ago would come so close to predicting the technology that we now take for granted.
This was a really cool phone for its time, but you should also take a look at the Motorola Moto Fone which has an e-Ink screen, and some crazy battery life.

Thanks for the retro reminder. This was my employee phone at Verizon and still hands down has the best speakerphone of any non Nextel handset. Analog worked great to. The signal strength was amazing.
Having those Pioneer head units was a status at the time. I had them in more than one of my vehicles back in the day.

Not sure why Motorola did the name that way, but it matched their 2 way pager, Timeport P935. I had a few of those 2 way pagers back then as I worked for PageNet. Never got their cell phone of the same name. Nice review...and for many a good flashback. Love the fireplace/studio!!

man i was 10 years old when one of my parents friends upgraded to this and i was blown away by that display. It was the first flip phone i went on the internet with!

I worked at a Verizon dealer when these came out. It came from a time Motorola had so much of the market, they were cocky enough to launch sub-brands to further saturate the market. Timeport was supposed to be the "high tech" brand with the newest stuff, hence the OLED. The low end timeports were also usually equipped with such high tech innovations as a phone book that actually could store a name alongside the number.
These were also used as the OEM phone in many Mercedes, BMWs and Jaguars. But of course, you couldn't just use a non OEM flashed handset in your luxury car, they were firmware locked to the specific brand, and being pre internet it wasn't easy to get firmware files.
Motorola was absolutely killing it back then 💯

Loving the setup! And I still have that Premier DEH-P860MP with the OLED display in my Firebird. Had to replace the faceplate once as it started to show dead lines on it. Love the look of these old displays!

I have said this a dozen times. This was the greatest phone ever made. I currently daily an iphone 14 pro max. I would gladly go back to my timeport.
i used to work at a major cell phone provider and that phone at the time was the hottest! it cost 249 on a two year contract!

I had that Pioneer head unit (actually the Premier version). It was actually very cool at the time but it did start failing fairly quickly.

Great video JR. I hope you continue to do these. Really interesting. Nostalgic content is always fun. Maybe you’ll consider doing some really old GPS units. I always favored TomTom, but a friend I did a lot of moto trips with always had the latest Garmin.
No wonder it was last used in 2004. That's about the time we started switching to camera phones, as they were referred to back then. Even though, in retrospect the Symbian phone I got back in 2004 could easily fit into the smartphone category.

I have a Motorola V70 around the house somewhere. It's been awhile since I saw it or used it. Pretty slick design though. It wasn't a flip phone but it was similar to a flip phone operationally.
The V70 was also a tank! That metal case held up great 💪

I did see a vampire source code for the OKI data. You had to have discriminator from a scanner into it so it could decode esns. It would also goto channel and dtmf decode for pin. Spread fraud among everyone not just one person. Yea motorola esn transfer was sweet you prorgrams a oldbag phone do esn transfer to do the newer startecs. It calculated the checksum to keep the esn from a transferred phone in storage. The clips towards the end where neat. you type esn in on phones keypad then it programs it into nvram. I dont see the reason for fraud after 99. Sprint had unlimited cdma for 99 a month.
