The Sony ICD-37 Was A Failure That Led To Today's Best Voice Recorders

  • When you think of voice recorders you probably think of microcassette. Sony wanted to change all that with the introduction of the ICD voice recorder series. The Sony ICD-37 was a slim pocket sized recorder that seemed like a great idea but had more drawbacks than the cassettes it was designed to replace. The only application I can outperforming other options is spying, it's tiny, silent, runs forever on a single AAA battery, and it can record in a continuous loop.. so it's perfect for those covert jobs.
Sony still makes the ICD recorders today, but now they can record for months on end, and they have USB or SD to archive your recordings: amzn.to/426dygO

Any idea of how much voice storage that would be? (Ballpark). I expect it would be more than the battery would support without a charge up, but would be interesting to know.

I have a Sony M-730V MicroCassette-Corder. It uses the same microcassettes, that fit the Sony Answering Machine TAM-30.
The one feature that I liked about the M-730V, was that it can record when it hears a noise, while being completely off.

I think these basically had a couple of specific usages and it wasn't for general public, it was used by journalist or interviews or used by secretaries to keep 'minutes' of a meeting or something. I'm sure it had some other niche uses like doctors offices and things like that. It was a supposed 'upgrade' from having to have hundreds of mini cassettes.

The biggest single issue i see that would destroy sales for this is it isnt even big enough to hold an hour lecture. HEAPS of these things go to students, you need about 4 hours to hold the 2 -3 lectures you commonly have in a day

John mate, im dead sure you know this but the irony of doing a video on a voice recorder with all those room reflections is kinda high XD That room really needs a bunch of soft furnishings if you arent gonna close mic lol.

Love the videos, one suggestion I have is perhaps take a different approach to your thumbnails if you're doing niche tech! Look at the 8-bit guy, for example. I think the audience for niche tech is less compelled by click-baity thumbnails. Of course this is only a suggestion. Keep up the videos!

When these were new, they were invaluable in the legal field. Tapes could be erased accidentally or physically damaged. These were smaller and more durable and way easier to store data.

Plus these are easily hidden in a breast pocket which was crucial for discretion.

@@TechThrowbackI'd imagine these stored in the evidence locker next to the casettes, if the recordings are on flash, not ram

Think of how long a Casio watch screen can stay on from a button cell. This recorder has a much beefier AAA. The always on screen does t surprise me, but just my $0.02.

Lmao. And to think I just got my mother a digital micro device to replace her cassette stuff to avoid the pain of analog to digital recording and file management after the fact… This thing is even more smooth than modern units!

I just came her to pause teh video at teh start and let you know you have an erroneous apostrophe in the thumbnail. "It's" is a contraction of "it is". People get confused about ownership, but the ownership case only applied to the person or thing in question, i.e. "the player's ancestors" (nothing belongs to the word "it", the ownership pertains to the player).
