- If there was ever a cordless phone to rule them all, this is it, the vtech LS5145. With features no one asked for, functionality beyond any other, and the promise of freeing you from your cell phone, this was a game changer. Except it wasn't, it sold poorly and eventually color screens vanished from cordless phones, along with the wacky idea that you'd want to use your cordless phone like a Bluetooth headset. At least the polyphonic ringtones and animated menus made the LS5145 a blast to use!

If you plan on doing a lot of stuff with landline phones, I distinctly remember being in a Sears store in the late 1980s or early 1990s, and they had a huge phone selection and some kind of device you could plug a few phones into (up to 4, I think), and call the other phones. If they're available, it might be worth picking up one of those devices so you can get a dial tone and test them out.
I had one cooler than this. 1998? I had a Microsoft 900mhz cordless phone. MP-900? Base station and handset charger were two different pieces. It also connected to your PC and came with software that allowed you to record your own voicemail, play it back, save it email it etc. Contact, Call History, Caller ID and, with a later update, make and receive calls on the PC. I wish I still had it.

I saw it in Fry's Electronics when it came out and thought, cool...saw the price and grabbed the $20 vtech cordless phone....for my then "so cool" Vonage home phone. Still have the Vonage home phone (and the original network adapter)...but soon Vonage will go away. Kept it for all those international calls...which now the work phone is voip too. Haha.

There are still color handsets out lol. We have the Ooma VoIP system here & their HC3 handset is color & works great.

I remember the Uniden and Radio Shack cordless phones back in the day. They had great range and decent options and pretty sure the Radio Shack ones were made by Uniden. Panasonic probably makes the best ones now and has great features. we have a 5 phone set now because almost every room in the house has it's own phone. They still don't really share the phone books to this day as I think you have to do something to get all the numbers shared to every phone even today. I had a phone that had battery backup in the base unit and that is certainly a nice safety feature if the power ever goes down.
I have ours hooked into a UPS so don't have to worry about it dropping offline. The ringtones are still built into the Panasonic and others now what with cell phones having all that now.

Last 2 houses I flipped, I pulled out all the phone wiring and jacks (filled in the holes in drywall). Left the box on the side of the house and that was that. Took out all the coaxial cable cable as well.
Meanwhile, new home builders are still charging $100 each for additional network and coax outlets.
We used to have a Panasonic cordless phone with a colour screen. Very similar to that one. Landlines are now dead, most people have ceased their lines now since everyone has a mobile phone. On the Panasonic phones once you had setup your address book on 1. You could "Send to No.2, or 3" to replicate the address book.

I am using a Motorola Ace for a work phone. Works just fine even though the screen has a lot of cracks in it.
The one feature I find most cordless phones are missing is a blinking light for messages/voicemail. You have to walk right up to them to read the screen saying "new message" which is stupid, instead of seeing the light blink across the room.
Not on Panasonics.

I actually bought this new when it came out. Not going to ever use it again, haven't had a landline in 15 years or so. 🍻
