I Had To Buy This Ill-Fated MP3 Player From Ukraine: iRiver T9

  • Reviewers did not have good things to say about the iRiver T9, and so few were sold that I have one of the only examples left. The iRiver T9 was a USB flash drive turned MP3 player, inside it's a T8 that's refined and wrapped in an anodized aluminum case. It's actually a great MP3 player with excellent 24 hour battery life, but all that was overshadowed by it's gimmicks and space constrained 2GB and 4GB memory.

    I loved my iriver ifp790!
Very ahead of its time! It had two 3.5mm jacks one input and one output. It could encode anything from the aux in into mp3 upto 320mbs, It could also record radio, all without a pc! It ran of a single AA battery and had a whopping 512mb of storage. This was about 2004.
    All the very best!

You should check out those mid 00s Sony MP3 players shaped like little beans they look and operate amazingly. The workaround for avoiding proprietary ancient Sony software isn't fun but they do work well still. My first player was an Iriver IFP something I got it at Circuit City...

I had the iRiver iFP-180T back in early 2000. Very solid player with decent sound quality but 128 Mbyte only. Used it with Sennheiser in-ear headphones if I remember correctly.

Now thats a setup, iRiver and Sennheiser for the win!

These types of generic handheld mp3 players were really common here and I have several that are now non-functional due to the ravages of time, but I always make a point to have at least one working and loaded with music just in case. First off, for language learning when you need to keep rewinding 15 seconds physical buttons are a must and touchscreens are useless for this. Also, I used to have a Spotify(tm) subscription but now just play pre-downloaded music since at some points of the war 4g was "there but not really there", where it'd give a false signal which would really confuse Spotify(tm) and tell you that it won't work without connecting to the internet. And yes, the biggest reason is that "paying for subscriptions" is not really part of the culture here, and just as I was getting "on board" the power cuts told me how wrong I was. Even now that power is no longer an issue I'm not going back.

I still use my Iriver T10 1gb when I travel! It's got a slick design, runs on a AA battery that lasts forever, very good sound quality, better than my smartphone. I regret not getting the 2gb version back in the day :(

Man that's a name I haven't heard, in a long time. Back in 2005 I had a 20GB H10 in "Remix Blue"... a couple years later an 80GB Zune. Just a greatest hits of MP3 player misfires.

This makes my old iPod Nano look huge. The Nano had a much bigger and nicer color screen but terrible play time on a full charge. The same 4 gig storage.

I used to have an iRiver e-reader back in the day. The technology wasn't all that amazing, but the design and the UI were great.

APE is Monkey's Audio, a precursor to FLAC

I had an iRiver in high school I bought with my own money because my parents wouldn’t get me an iPod for Christmas. I was told everyone got gift cards for Christmas, but my step dad fully paid for my brother’s college and I was given $50. Yay 2005…

AIFF - audio interchange file format. Generically, it’s the Apple equivalent of Windows WAV (PCM audio) but was designed from the beginning to support metadata like the key the file is in and loop information.
AIFC generally denoted compressed audio, usually in the ADPCM format.
If you ever use GarageBand or Logic, the sampled loop files are in AIFF.

iPod didn't really take that much of a hold here in EU; sure many people had them but also many chose something else. Thomson, Philips, iRiver, Creative, Sansa, as well as generic S1 which usually went for less than $20. Apple players were bulky and seemed fragile, and iTunes didn't support Windows until 2004ish, by that time most people already had something else they were happy with and they were likely to stay within the brand or choose something similar, something where you just drop off files onto it in mass storage mode and off you go.
The T9 wasn't sold here because time came a little too late for it, the market kind of collapsed after smartphones came about. But earlier and more expensive models sure were.
APE file format support is weird since it was spectacularly uncommon on hardware. It's a purely lossless CODEC which is higher efficiency than FLAC, so early adopters of lossless compression would be very happy, but it's pretty slow and can't use the usual DSP blocks; and additionally it's not an open standard.
It's interesting that the looping mode is "STUDY" mode. It makes sense. Not something you would know since you probably never studied a foreign language by yourself. I studied from cassete tape and i was happy that i had the tape counter feature, i could reset it to where i needed to go back to and listen again several times.
My fave MP3 players for sure have to be SansaAMS devices. The audio quality is incredible.
