I Bought 96 Pounds Of Smartphones And Cell Phones... Here's What I Found

  • I saw this tote full of old phones sticking out in a warehouse at a metal recycling company we've been working at. I wasn't sure they'd sell them but I had to go ask. It turns out they were for sale for $5 a lb, I said I'd take them and we carried them to the scale to find out it was 96Lbs worth. $500 dollars later I was out the door with more phones than I can count and 25 more pounds of chargers to go with them. Let's dig in, bring back some memories, and see what my $500 bought me!

    Bit of a crazy update... I've pulled over 20 working iPhones (although some are activation locked) out of the tote! 3G, 3Gs, 4, 5, 6, 6S, 7 just to name a few.

    you can hot wire most of those phones by using a variable power supply and some thin wires that you sandwich between the battery. Just put some thin Kapton tape over the battery leads first to be safe. I love the new channel! I had quite a few of those phones over the years. This really brought me back.

    great episode, a nice stroll down memory lane. When i was in Europe back in 2001, they had a more advance cell phone network or better phones with prepaid. I had a candy bar prepaid phone , Sagen and it was light years better than what was available stateside. The StarTac phones were bullet proof. Awesome haul.

    Palm Treo’s were awesome, place I worked at we had lots of them for corporate phones that I had to support. I worked at HP when we bought Palm, I still have 2 of their Touchpads that they offered to employees, one is still new in the box. I almost got a Palm Pre as my corporate phone but then Leo stepped in and killed Palm, was really sad to see that, I was a big Palm fan. My favorite phone was the Centro.

Might be a cool way to illustrate how Apple dipped their toes into the cell phone market before going all in for the 2007 release of the iPhone.

    That Nokia 822 was one of the mid ranges... I had a Nokia 920 (their first flagship Windows phone) for work when they first came out... built like a tank, like all Nokias should be (dented my hardwood floor when I dropped it from the second floor), battery lasted for days, and the CZ camera was easily 3 years ahead of the rest of the market. App support was pathetic, though, which for a work phone didn't matter anyways (email/text/browser/o365 is all I needed).

    • @HazewinDog
      @HazewinDog 2 роки тому

      also... he mentions that he has a blackberry that has survived for 2 weeks on standby, but the Lumia 920 did that as well! it was one of the reasons these WIndows phones were so great. In airplane mode I believe I got over a month out of it, despite using it as night clock and alarm (this was when it was at least 3 years old and I'd replaced it)
      I've since acquired two more Lumia 920s and made a fully functional and flawless looking one out of them, plus it gave me lots of spare parts. the only problem mine had after the 3.5 years I used it as my only phone was that one of the speaker grills no longer produced sound. I still don't know how that happened, because it only has a single speaker... but either way I fixed it now. after years of laying in my drawer, it also got the screen yellowing issue, hence I needed some extra replacement parts.
      still the best phone I've ever had. truly wonderful thing. would love to try a 1020 and 1520 as well one day.

After that you can buy a storage unit for another channel before eventually buying a haunted ghost town for your last channel. Finally after all this you should grow a beard and start fixing cars again before you get more old electronics.

Which was the first phone with power and volume buttons on the back for ergonomics as that is where your hand touches back of phone. LG claimed the G2 was the 1st phone with double tap to wake. If you want to use those Nokia Lumia windows phones, you only have a few months left. Even though they are 4G they used CDMA for voice and Verizon's killing that by the end of the year.
    I was selling Version when they came out. They were really well built phones, and Windows Phone OS was actually decent. But it was like 2 years too late, and the app store was super weak compared to Android and iOS, and most people didn't care at that point. They only sold because they had crazy subsidies on them and we could give them away for nothing and still make a good margin.
    The Blackberry without the Keyboard was called the Storm. It was VZW's answer to the iPhone, they influenced the design and it was carrier exclusive in the US.
    In reality, it was a colossal turd and opened the door for Android to swoop in and crush RIM. The Screen on that one wasn't broken...that's just how they were. There is a metal dome switch under the middle of the screen that is supposed to replicate the "click" of real keys. I always assumed they originally intended there to be buttons on all four corners but it was cut for cost so the screen just sorta floats there and the feel is terrible.
