I have one from *21 years* ago, Sharper Image branded, "InfoGlobe" and it *Still works!* It has one helluva motor + LEDs as it ran nonstop (minus any power outages, which rare in my part of the world) for *16 years!* But since I moved 4 years ago it's been in storage as a keepsake since I no longer have a need for a landline. I may have it buried with me actually, for ID'ing who's visiting my grave. 😉
We were very early adopters of caller id. I learned quickly to just say "hello" and not say the name of the person calling - people weren't used to it yet. Thanks for the throwback ~ Chuck
I remember when we first got caller ID, no matter where you were in the house we would run to the kitchen (where we had the caller ID setup) and we would look to see who was calling. Great video JR
My dad worked at the phone company so we were amongst the first to get caller ID. Our main phone was an old school rotary wall phone that was hardwired so we couldn't easily connect the caller ID. It was back in my parent's bedroom where we couldn't see it. We eventually upgraded to a more modern touch tone wall phone so we could use the caller ID with it. Seems weird now but caller ID was a big deal when it came out.
i was working at target around 2002 and these popped up on clearance one day for 10 bucks. i had never seen one before but i had to have it. all of my friends wanted one, but i never saw one before or after the one that i got
We had the Olympia InfoGlode cordless phone combo unit, OL3020, used it up until maybe 8 - 10 years ago or so, mainly for just the caller ID portion. If I remember right it may have started to stop working properly, but it ran for years. We got it off ebay Feb 9th / 10th 2007, I just checked an old email address and it showed the bid date / time the auction was won, yes still have that information in an email surprisingly. Paid about $25+ shipping costs. Forgot about this to be honest, but it was pretty cool.
He was very likely the dentist for the person who owned this caller ID device before OP. That also means both the previous owner and their dentist more than likely lived in Indianapolis, Indiana at the time - and perhaps still do.
Sharper image is still around. I feel like I've seen a physical store in the past year or two. But I definitely see sharper image branded products in places like CVS/Walgreens. And their website is still going. Although I can't imagine they're doing to hot right now.
The name is still around but the original company is long gone. Iconix bought their IP after they went bankrupt. Iconix has since sold them. Iconix owns a lot of once popular brands like Joe Boxer, Mossimo, Starter, Umbro, Ocean Pacific, etc...
Very nice. Caught my attention on the home page. Caller ID still going, We got on out cordless and wired phone in UK. Also the system sets the clock. when the clocks change as 9 days ago I just ring the home phone using mobile phone, cell phone. It puts it's self right. A nice gadget this InfoGlobe. Guessing it turns it's self on if the phone rings as well. Had a handheld thing from UK theme park. A spiney handle thing and 3 little buttons, could have been 4, week red LED's. in bright light, not much good, same idea, program a short sentence, Was limited, some words really, pin the thing, display the words. Not very good as it not sure where in the circle it was or constant speed, human powered, overprice tat you buy at theme park, 2003 , 2002. something like that. Notice a spelling mistake in the title.
You review old techs and cool cars, you must be hella interesting to take a beer with!! ❤❤❤ happy to have found different channel with different content but same creator, fantastic! R
Cool video. thanks for making it. I had couple of these InfoGlobes. if left running continuously, they dont last. Various quality issues with the mechanical design.
The Caller ID information was usually transmitted between the first and the second ring. Nowadays it is sent along with the initial ring if the information is available.
Interesting it is surprisingly clear on camera. If you do want to use it legitimately without a legitimate phone line there's a product called the XLink they have various models and it connects over Bluetooth to a cell phone and gives you a landline connection. But it also sends caller ID data! If I remember correct you can even send it to send the caller ID before the ring? Either way you pair that with your cell phone you connect that to the thing when your cell phone gets calls you'll see the color ID on it. I never really got caller ID it was one of those expensive optional add-ons but I remember it being all the rage. Some devices like satellite receivers even had a decoder that would flash up a message on your screen yet of course we didn't have caller ID so I never got to experience that only got to see it in various spots.
That is super cool. Work in the Telecom industry I remember when caller ID was a thing. I actually still deal with CNAM today. Pretty much these days you can kill someones phone and they won't know for days. Shut down the broadband and folks will call in minutes! If you have a butt set you can actually hear it the signal.
I had one just like that in my office at work going 24/7 for years. I never used the caller I.D. feature. I just used it for a clock and calendar. It eventually died.
Ah yes mid 90’s tech where the caller id most likely was a separate device. I remember back in the mid 2000’s getting AT&T uverse and one of the features being the caller id on the tv. Seen a few other companies do the same. Probably had our first caller id back around 97 and that was because the price had dropped to around $25 for a stand alone unit that ran off of a pair of AA batteries. Heck back in the days of aol 9.0 I remember having the caller id pop in when you received call waiting while online.
I had a device that would voice announce the caller - if it was a name then it would say it if it wasn't listed it would just give the number or say caller ID blocked. You could add numbers to a list and "block" them although the phone would usually ring once then stop. I had that through the late 90's. When our DirecTV box supported on-screen caller ID we stopped using it - I kept it for a few years then sold it or gave it away.
I think some providers back then didn't have call ID and you had to pay extra for it, but at some point I think it became standard and you could just plug in your call ID box and know who was calling.
Might be worth the investment in getting a Link2Cell device so you can see if some of these land line devices work and do some demos... I have a cordless phone that has blue tooth to a cell phone but it only works for handsets off of the base it's linked to (i.e. not back out the RJ11) -
I've seen a few of those cordless phones I wonder how well they work. I went the opposite route and got an XLink I can use all my analog phone goodness.
Asterisk, etc. Yeah that's another way of going about it. I was looking at all the ways to do virtual analog phone lines but ATA's weren't around yet and cheap. Was contemplating building my own weird Bluetooth rotary phone based off an instructables. Until I found a product and that just seem to be the easier way to go for me an xlink it Connect over Bluetooth to my cell phone. I finally broke down and bought one after doing a demo and wishing I had something simple to just plug a rotary dial phone in. It does so much in a small package, I have a little bag and battery that I can throw for my shoulder and then I can walk around with my rotary dial (Black or red) desk phone without tripping people with a extremely long cord haha.
@@TechThrowback a line card, like an FXO adapter? Or an FXS one that would talk to extensions and give you dial tone? I've been hanging onto an old Digium Iaxy ATA thinking I'll care about setting up a PBX again someday, and a couple old Linksys PAP2NA Vonage adapters that can (could at least) be unlocked to be used via SIP to a PBX. I'd be surprised if there aren't companies still producing SIP compatible ethernet connected ATAs that would've talked to that CallerID box

For a novelty product that's incredible reliability!! Glad to hear you still have one ☎️

Mike Jones!
Can’t believe no one else has said anything about the phone number yet. 😂
Who??!
I received a 30 day ban on FB once for asking a dude named that, if that was still his number. 💀💀💀

Will have to get one and connect to my landline phone here in Aussie land.
I love how this channel is becoming the Island of Misfit Tech Toys!

Oh hell yeah. I remember walking into the Radio Shack at the local mall to get some XMODS parts and seeing this.
I love this channel John Ross!
I remember when they added caller ID at our house. We had an ATT standalone ID unit.
That was new to me thanks jr

Caller ID was an additional fee with whoever your phone company was. You could not just plug it in and see who was calling. Same with 3 way calling.
