The Nokia 3220 Is A Nightclub For Your Pocket... With Light-Up Ringtones

  • Everyone personalized their Nokia phone and Nokia leaned into that hard. The Nokia 3220b might have been the height of personalized phones right out of the box. Sure it had the usual Xpress-On covers, but it also had a full library of MIDI ringtones with flashing lights and vibrate to accompany them. The games took advantage of a built-in tilt sensor, it had a VGA camera that could record video, there was an NFC cover for mobile payments. This phone could do almost everything modern phones do, just not very well. If there's one thing it does well, it would be bringing the party where-ever you are.

Back in 2006 when I had it.
Mine was able to play mp3 files. I loved how people were very impressed watching it play the file with the lights synchronized.
I think the firmware version was V5.50. Also, I saw one with V6.xx (I don't remember the full version) with custom icons.

I had this phone (for a short while before I fell in a river with it in my pocket). Thanks for opening Club Pinball, totally forgot about that!
One of my fondest memories was finding out it shot video. We used to mess around, pausing the video and then moving out of the way to make it look like you disappeared.

I had one of these. Super fun, everyone I knew loved it for the lights. I had the Bluetooth adapter for it, too, on top of the message cover. It also came with 5 inserts and the “make your own” insert.
    The browser was garbage.

That was a great phone. The light show was cool, like once, maybe twice. I can imagine how cringeworthy this would have been if I was standing next to a stranger in an elevator with one of these. A nice look at a very brief time when GSM was finally coming into it's own in the US.

You forgot the best part of this phone, there was another backplate that had LEDS in it where you type out messages and wave the phone back and forth in the air to display it.

I had the Nokia 3220 in black which I guess was the European version and I loved it. I was 14 years old when I had this phone, and I remember creating my own designs for the back XpressCover thing. I also remember playing a lot of games on it too such as a 2D version Splinter Cell. Of course, I chose this phone for the lights.

My first used Digital camera I probably picked up in the early 90s was vga resolution maximum and had the memory built in, no memory card. It was so cool back then but such a limited POS now. I later found the next version that included a memory card and 800x600 resolution. I have a Canon T3 DSLR now that still works great now and a bunch of lenses for it and have several Canon film SLR cameras. My phone now has the same resolution my T3 does and can record 4khdr video in stereo.

Woah, I never have seen this phone. My first phone was nokia was a 5110.. I remember having it on the dash of my car with the windows down, took a hard turn, and it went flying out the window. Stopped. Grabbed it off the street and it worked just fine, just a little dinged.

I didn't get to own one of these, but I was able to borrow one from friends, and aside from playing games, I was using it mostly to play sounds and amaze myself with those lights lol

I was an early digital photo adopter also. I had a Ricoh RDC-300 that took those vga 640x480 grainy mosaic pictures. When this stuff hit phones it was a game changer.

Excellent video. I very much enjoyed the in-depth review and how this model surprisingly had a special NFC cover!
I doubt the NFC cover was popular or utilized much other than as a gimmick (NFC payments were not utilized in N.A. yet) but still groundbreaking for 2004.

  • @matthewjbauer1990
    @matthewjbauer1990 Рік тому

The 3220 never supported tap to pay or NFC payment features. Most of them only supported reading of NFC tags. However, there we places that allowed you to use NFC for things like transit passes or badge access. The phone + NFC cover could read the NFC from the transit pass or card and store it for use with a special app. Sadly, in North America, I don't think NFC was used for anything besides simply reading tags back then.

I think some people use those phones to take pics for Marketplace. Thankfully does not take forever anymore to type and send a text. I have been using mobile phones since they were pay by the minute. I am not sure what phone I was using at that time. I still have some of my old Nokias though.
