The Moshi IVR Failed At Being The World's Greatest Alarm Clock...

  • The Moshi IVR was supposed to be a smart alarm clock you could have a natural conversation with (well a very limited conversation). Unfortunately it fell short at every turn, it wasn't great at listening for it's wake word, it wasn't good as recognizing speech, and the RGB nightlight makes more sense for a child than an adult. There's no doubt I was excited about it 15 years ago, so I bought it the moment it came out. The Moshi alarm clock was a cool concept, but one that was replace shortly after by our digital helpers like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant.

I remember they also had a similar clock called Ivee. These were cool, but nothing compared to today's smart alarm clocks with built-in Wi-Fi, a virtual assistant, a music player, and pretty much anything you need it to do.

I had one of these in high school back in 09 or so. I remember I had actually liked it because since the voice commands were so clunky and bad, it actually worked well to wake me up. I had to wake up enough to be able to clearly and loudly annunciate "moshi, turn off the alarm!"

This thing would would drive me nuts getting things wrong, and so would that night light.
I'm so thankful for my Google home speakers, and Nest Home Hub, and my first smart clocks that I still use in my bedrooms are Best Buy branded Insignia Voicesmart speakers w/Google assistant that also show the time/temp with a simple bluish/white display, and even include a USB A port for charging a phone, and they still work great, but just in case the Google servers, the internet, and/or power goes down, I always have my phone alarm set to go off 10 minutes later, so I'm not up too late.

One thing I did like about Moshi is sleep sounds. Other than that it was useless the day it came out. Whoever designed it I would love some of whatever they were smoking when they did.

I've got an Echo in the office I never really use, I mean I got my big PC in there. But this got me thing in it might be a good alarm clock so I started googling. Thanks! Turns out it might actually better than my phone for that purpose.

I still use an old school alarm clock, I've had it about 10 years, hopefully if I ever need a new one I can find one somewhere :)

Just don't make the same mistake I did and buy one with white digits. Still miss my old one where you could pick weekdays and/or weekends for both alarms. And it had big enough digits I could still kinda see with my glasses off.

I could never go back to an old school alarm clock after having Google clocks, speakers, and a nest hub for years being so easy to set, using them to control the smart outlets for the lamps throughout my home/carport light, play music, etc.., but just in case the power, internet, or google servers go down, I have my phone set to go off 10 minutes later than my Google smart clock in my bedroom.

Like with my iHome, I would probably just use this as a standalone clock if I had one

Would the physical AL switch be Active Listening On/Off? What a cool device!

My Sonic boom alarm comes in clutch with the bed shaker and a high pitch scream. But I rarely use it these days.

Amazing how quickly technology evolves and improves....though whether that's a good thing is a very debatable topic.

"its not even internet connected" -- good. The Internet of Things doesn't need to be everywhere - and this isn't for tech freaks. I got this for my dad in 2010, who would have to crouch down to his nightstand and squint at his clock just to set it every night, and he wasnt even visually impaired. It just died today, 14 years later. I will be getting a replacement Moshi for him - he doesnt need a google home or alexa for a simple alarm clock, it would require an email my dad doesnt have, and any music would require a streaming sub my dad also doesnt have, and his wifi doesn't reach his bedroom. scary that "they all already know everything about us and are always listening" IoT convenience is somehow preferable to some basic set commands for a simple product that works

JR, have you ever heard of Ambient Devices? They had a bunch of cool stuff like Stock Market Orbs, analog dashboards and weather devices. Cool stuff.

"server side magic" is one reason I dislike so many "smart" devices. They are all stupid and dependent on the vendor not going under or dropping support. That is why IOT is so stupid.

You should do a review of the first generation talking wristwatch. It has a rooster crowing sound.
