Приєднався 24 тра 2023
This channel was created to give viewers insight into the day-to-day challenges a fire sprinkler service technician faces. It's also a place for other sprinkler fitters to share ideas on products and techniques. I hope this channel inspires someone to consider the fire sprinkler trade. Fire sprinkler systems are life-safety devices and shall only be serviced by a licensed sprinkler contractor. Please do not use any of this content as information on how to service sprinkler systems.
I started in this trade in 1999 working in a shop fabricating pipe and making deliveries for a sprinkler contractor. After 8 months I began a five year apprenticeship with Local 669. Around 2004, I got out of the sprinkler trade for three years and was reinitiated back in to the trade in 2007 and finished my apprenticeship in 2008. In 2018 I passed the Fire Sprinkler Mastery certification. What I have learned the most is how much I still have to learn.

Replacing Sprinkler Heads
Replacing a few standard response sprinkler heads that are over 50 years old. It's cheaper to replace than test. NFPA 25 requires standard response heads to be sample tested or replaced after 50 years.

Sometimes the entire drop will come out when you are replacing a head. This one was easy but sometimes the drop is long and the system is trapped with water making a big mess.

This attic is not an easy one to climb around in. This system is 17 years old and has just started developing leaks. The cheapest route in the long run is to replace the sch.10 pipe with sch. 40. If the customer choses not to replace it, they will pay far more for repairs spread over time.

Replacing a Clapper Gasket on a Reliable D Dry Valve
Переглядів 4834 місяці тому
In my opinion the Reliable Model D dry valve was the best dry valve ever made. They are typically easy to work on and have a simple design. Unfortunately on the earlier models, the clapper pin could be difficult to remove. Later they added a hole on the back with a plug so you could drive the pin out.

I thought your supposed to flip the check valve and test against the check valve
@@sammydavis3796 You can, but it’s not required.
Obviously your unit is about wore out hi amps n capacitor all old the generator people should of put that on there when installed

Absolutely love your content...keep up the good work, learning a bunch..
Good install. I've had one for a couple years that I installed on a 4-ton Goodman. Installation instructions were very straightforward. Tested with my Duromax 13000 EH (10,500) portable generator and it works very well. Using a portable for whole-house is another topic. Micro-Aire does have excellent customer support through Hutch Mountain if you have any questions regarding install for your particular unit, and although the app seems limited (connection and live data only accessible during call for cooling), if you send diagnostic data they are right on it. I also enjoyed the screw drop response; happens to the best of us. You did everything right (for a fire sprinkler tech haha. Don't be so hard on yourself). Good call with the cap discharge and terminal cleaning. For everyone reading, you need to purchase a replacement capacitor. I have replaced mine (and a backup) and it is very easy, cheap, and they DO fail (probably the first component to fail). If you are doing this install, just go ahead and replace your Start/Run cap at the same time. I noticed that you have an outdoor home surface that prevents this, but as a side note if some of you have siding/framework to attach the EasyStart to on the house, this might be better for at least three reasons: 1. vibration from the condenser unit 2. if you need to replace your condenser, this EasyStart is not attached to it (OOPS! forgot about that soft-start). Just need to run some seal-tite and possibly extra conductors from the condenser panel to the wall where the unit is attached. For me, the included cord was run through seal-tite and the conductors were plenty long enough. 3. you can view the indicator lights on the unit in case of fault through the clear plastic cover that is attached to the wall, rather than hidden. This may be helpful for some in case there is an issue. This case is waterproof (do not open), and it really will not be better protected whilst trying to fit it into the electrical enclosure for your condenser. And that can be a pain in the butt all by itself. Not necessary to fit this large unit on the condenser itself, as long as you ensure waterproof conductor installation. Another side note for those with older condenser compressors with suspect terminals at the pecker (S, R, C), I used a kit that works very well for this purpose, and I recommend it. Also requires good cleaning of what's left of your terminals if they are degraded. Hope this helps some: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TFK4587/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Also, always clean your condenser coils by shield disassembly and regular hose pressure from inside out once a year!
Likely the highest area for a potential fire so you don't flood the whole building in the event of a more likely fire.
isn't that a redundant system? If the other sprinklers fail this will still work?
Nows time to run a hose off that, overhead gerbal feeder water tube
Wires touching the metal pipe wouldn't pass in my area.
Mine either
Probably has to do with whats directly under it and them initially not wanting it wet unless the building is hit by a plane
They were under strict instructions not to bring back extra material.
Past Chemical shower area?
Yeah in a post office you know when they have to handle those nasty boxes😂😂
Thank you for making this 💯
Hi I got a question maybe you can answer as you know anti freeze is frowned upon in newi stallion and instead the advice given is dry pipe my question to you is I. Know a hose can be attached to a sprinkler system I was wondering do you know if it's ever been done to connect a fire hose to a dry pipe sprinkler or pre action riser?
Yes, some standpipes are supplied by a dry pipe valve.
@@FireSprinklerTechthank you my new question is could it some how be connected to to a pre-action system ?
@@Fredengle Sorry, can’t help you there. I am a sprinkler fitter and we don’t do alarm work.
Sound like they maybe had some issues with potentially breaking that head in the past. No flow switch or drain lol. Not considered a system. If you had to shut one head off you’re getting very wet.
Thanks ! Helped a lot !
Or the sprinkler main pipe to building is completely filled with sediment. Can cause water to slowly fill the system but it won't fill quickly. Seen once.
very very detailed, practical and helpful video.
As a civil engineer, I love these videos with detailed explanations and real-world examples of how this stuff comes together. Too many of us are stuck looking at drawings and specifications, but everything makes much more sense when you can see it actually come together.
This looks familiar :)
with 2 men how long would you say it takes to complete one?
It all depends on the situation. If you have a good operator doing the excavating and you’re not too deep, don’t have anything in your way, you can do it in about 4 hours. However, I would never plan on that. You could get in a situation where you have to pour a thrust block back. Now you’re talking all day and a return trip after the concrete sets. I would figure all day and exclude pouring a thrust block if you are giving them a price.
@@FireSprinklerTech what would you quote one at?
@@TheCLOGDAWGPlumbing I don’t do the quotes, don’t really know the cost.
How would you pump against a storz cap? Or pump into a storz cap. I have to hydro test an FDC that has a storz. I wanted to disconnect the pipe from the FDC check valve WITHOUT draining the system. Then put a drain cap on the pipe and pump against the storz cap. Will the storz cap hold pressure or does it leak?
Reason for not wanting to drain the system. It’s at a mall with anti freeze loops everywhere and there is a total of 15 FDC’s to test.
I have tested against the cap. Some don’t seal. I have a storz x 2.5” hose connection I use.
Great video. Nice simple explanation on how the valve works. A question if I may? I'm trying to troubleshoot a false "system charged" water flow alarm that occured on a 769 NXT valve. What could be the possible reasons that the water flow alarm would trip when the system itself has not tripped? Air pressure in the system is above 20 psi, all valves are in the correct positions etc. I did notice a tiny water leak on the low pressure actuator via the vent valve, but unsure if this could be the cause. I've charged the system with the test valve, and then discharged again afterwards via the PRV under the alarm pressure switch, but can't get the alarm to clear. Driving me nuts. I've visibly aged in the last 24 hours.
Is this a pre-action system? I ask because the I think the 769 is designed for pre-action or deluge. Just want to make sure you didn't mean 768 NXT
When you say discharged via the PRV, are you referring to the manual ball drip also called a velocity check? If you don't have any water pressure on the velocity check and it is still in alarm, I would slowly remove the velocity check to confirm it isn't stuck or plugged. If the trim is clear and you are still in alarm then open the pressure switch and check the state of the switch. If the switch is active indicating a water flow then you might have a bad switch. If the switch is not active then it's an alarm system issue.
Its call obstruction investigation my friend.
When the pump on zero flow shut down the primary source of the power does not activate the secondary power source / generator? why did you need to get inside the settings of the transfer switch?
are there any downsides to using this micro air soft start?
Nice video.. with doing the five (5) year there could be many different scenarios as to accessibility to get at the check. Also what type of check valve. Learned in this business you have to CYA and also take pictures. In the fire protection industry many people don't want to spend money on something that they can't see. Then you also have contractors out there that are pipe bangers or do their inspections in the car yet there are still some honest people out there. From experience its always advisable to keep extra new couplings, a spare check, 2.5" rubber gaskets for the ones that are rotted out on the FDC.
Best thing I ever installed. I installed right before hurricane Ian in 2022 and was able to run whole house 3 ton unit. My advice would be to change capacitor and contactor while you are in there and you will be good for many years. This saves your unit from pre mature failures and the A/C companies hate it. Nice video!
This is exactly what I did this past weekend. The HVAC system is about 12 years old and I also have a backup generator. Having tested the A/C on generator last year, the current draw is w/in limits of the gen set, but you can hear the RPM is pulled down on startup. Ordered the soft-start and also updated the contactor (per AS/Trane). Replaced the capacitor with the appropriate size one from AmRad (through an Amazon market place dealer). Installed the replacement parts first to make sure it's all running then installed the soft start kit. In-rush current dropped (after initialization process) from ~81A to ~24A. Runs very quiet too. Also while I had it opened up, washed down the coils. It's expensive, but I think it will really pay off in the long-run with the life of the compressor and when on backup power.
Learned a lot, thank you very much Sir.
U need a helper
Thanks from Boston. I need this in my arsenal.
One thing I’m not understanding is I know a main control valve shuts water to either sections or the entire standpipe system. What I’m not understanding is sometimes I will go past normal control valves that have a tamper and a flow switch and a inspectors test, but sometimes they will have “main control” by the tamper. I don’t get how a tamper could be a main control to shit off water to standpipe? Is there something in missing? (This is for a dry system by the way)
What tool can I buy to remove it and what’s the best brand to replace white in color ?
You need to contact a fire sprinkler contractor. Sprinkler heads come in different sizes, temperatures, spray patterns, orientations, K-factors, etc… This channel is not intended to be a DIY channel. It is to help other sprinkler fitters. It’s not uncommon for us to come in and find critical problems because someone tried to work on their fire sprinkler system. Often times costing them a lot to repair.
How frequently should the compressor be going off? We have a compressor on our system that has started to run every 30 minutes for about 30-60 seconds in one building.
More than likely you have a small leak starting to develop. They can be very difficult to find when they are small like that.
What’s the average price you would charge for a new hydrant installation? And I’m in Illinois basically Chicago. We also put auxiliary valves with every hydrant.
I remember when them torque safe reducers were brand new. We did a brand new 14 story building using those. The painters, finishers and carpenters damaged about 900 pendants and sidewalls by either painting the head, covered the head in mud or damaged the head with the drywall. We went back to change them I’d say about 10% of the heads wouldn’t come out. They just kept spinning inside that brass piece in the fitting. We had to cut holes in the walls and ceilings to be able to hold back to get the head out.
That's interesting, I haven't ran into that. They make a wrench to use as a hold back. Extremely overpriced, but it would save you from cutting out the ceiling. parts.spearsmfg.com/sourcebook/FLAMEGUARD_FG-1_SHRK.pdf

Are the all-thread rodes stainless steel composition? Otherwise would rust out over time creating a stress point up against the TEE joint
Zink coated ATR and we spray them with a protective coating.
@@FireSprinklerTech 👍👍 Looks like back in the day on those old hydrants certainly wasn't the case!
Weep hole looks to be only 1/8"to 1/4"... Why isn't it larger to allow water to escape from the barrel faster???
That's a pretty standard size. I believe NFPA requires it to drain within 60 minutes.
