  • I was wrong on this one. However, if you replace enough parts you'll eventually fix it. Lol, hope you learn from my mistakes.

Good troubleshooting ! I always use a spring check valve regardless of orientation .

I find that the most common reason for this type of air compresser to sort cycle is the 1/4" check valve

So what does the air do with a fire suppression system? Does it give the water extra pressure?

No, it depends on the type of system. On a standard wet system an air compressor is not used. A wet system is the simplest most common system used. It simply relies on water pressure. This is a special type of system called a pre-action system. It’s a lot to explain in a comment but basically this system requires more than just the sprinkler head activating before it will allow water to discharge. On this type of system the air is used as supervisory air to alert that the sprinkler head has activated or there is a leak in the system piping. Thanks for the comment, I will try and make a video on the different types of systems.

My first thought when it was short cycling was a bad check valve cause that’s pretty common. Just ran into that the other day. Had a general riser mount with a bad circle seal check and it was turning on for a split second every 2 min.

Yeah, very common with the circ checks getting debris in them. This one had me confused because it started around 11-13 psi when the switch was set around 30 psi. Even if the check on the compressor was leaking by, it would not short cycle because there is not a check valve on the system. It would have to leak by enough for the system pressure to drop. I like these types of service calls that really make you think.

excellent video, i love these trouble shootings ones the most! one question, ive never really understood the usage of a fill cup? ive seen them but never been showed what they are for.

The fill cup is used on dry valves such as the Reliable model A or D and some other valves. You add a little water through them before putting air on the system. It’s just to keep a little water on top of the clapper. I don’t think any modern dry valves have them now.

what is the point of having a little bit of water on top of the clapper? on a dry system?@@FireSprinklerTech

@Execoo Honestly I’m not sure. I was always told it keeps the rubber on the clapper from drying out. It’s only required on a few valves nowadays so I’m not sure.

The purpose of the priming water is to assist in providing a positive seal at the air seat ring to prevent air from escaping into the intermediate chamber and on to the atmosphere. The clapper will remain in the closed position as long as the air pressure in the piping system is maintained at the proper level.

I guess my question is why did we have to prime the old valves but not the newer valves. You had to prime a Reliable model D but you do not prime a model FX. Actually I can't think of any valve made now that you prime. I'm not disagreeing with you at all, I just find it interesting that no manufacture requires it now. @@dicko-200
