Printmaking Tutorial - Chine Collé Style Print Backing
Today I am bringing you a full tutorial on what I like to refer to as post-print chine collé. Instead of doing chine collé during the printing process, as the name normally refers to, I am splitting it into two steps; printing first onto the thin paper (in my case gampi) and starch paste gluing onto a backing paper later. This is a technique I learnt in Japan for wood engraving and it has come in very handy as I moved into hand-printed lithography.
Thanks as always for watching, liking and commenting. Let me know if you would like more detailed tutorials like this in the future!

Kitchen Lithography Experiment - Total Destruction
Переглядів 77921 день тому
Today's video is all about destroying a foil lithograph. I am purposefully not saving the foil between printing sessions so that the oil and water separation will break down. Normally, when I stop printing or take a break, I coat the foil and image with a layer of gum arabic to preserve it. So, this video is a very long demonstration of why you need to coat your foil if you want to print it aga...

    Very good video, thank you. Have seen Henry doing the process, always a struggle for me. Have been watching and I am inspired by your work. You have a strong personal style. Going through the growing pains of finding a kitchen lithography process that works reliably for me - almost there for small prints. Fellow Canadian here where some fine art supplies are hard to find or come by, if I may ask, where do you source gampi paper? Shopping at Above Ground (TO) sometimes helps, but not all the times :)

      Thanks! For gampi paper, I would recommend The Japanese Paper Place in Toronto or Au Papier Japonais in Montreal. You can also order online from Ozu washi in Tokyo, but shipping and taxes will of course be quite expensive. How can i transfer a design from paper to foil , please I try a esitol and it failure

    • @valeriesyposz
      @valeriesyposz 6 днів тому

      I transfer the outlines of my design to the foil using a ballpoint pen over a sketch (sometimes with carbon copy paper in between). In this way, you still need to draw the design onto the foil, using the outlines as a guide. The other method would be using acetone, but it will only work for a toner print (i.e,. a photocopy and not a print from an inkjet printer). In addition to ample amounts of acetone, it will also need pressure (like being passed through a press).

      If you cleaned with oil without protecting the foil with gum arabic, the rate of destruction would most likely be sped up. If you preserved the plate first and then cleaned with oil, it would print just fine.

    I’m not really familiar with kitchen lithography but if you had maintained the foil between printings I’d expect you could go a month. Also I had no idea you could pull that many prints off of foil. I want to experiment with that style this summer.

    • @valeriesyposz
      @valeriesyposz 22 дні тому

      If you maintain the foil, it will last unchanged for months. So you could print and save it and print the exact same image a month later. This experiment was all about ruining things just for fun.

    How many prints can you pull from a kitchen litho plate without the state changes? Are you using regular foil or heavy duty?

    • @valeriesyposz
      @valeriesyposz 22 дні тому

      The most I have done is when I printed business cards. I printed over 100 from the same foil before it started to deteriorate. At that point, the background started to pick up ink and no amount of fountain solution or re-etching could save it. I almost always print less than 20 because I have no need for large editions, not because the foil couldn't keep going.

    • @valeriesyposz

      It’s akin to asking someone who paints in watercolour why they don’t use oil paint instead. While there is some correlation, the resulting aesthetics are completely different. Screen print is great in the way it is very fast and versatile to print on a variety of materials. I, personally, just prefer lithography.

    Lovely video series!! Am finding your home litho concept so, so fascinating!! Tried litho stones at college but never thought it'd be possible for home use...very exciting!! I have questions... 1. I have access to one stone but not 2, how else would you grain a level surface? 2. You hand print, which blows my mind, can you use an etching or relief press? .. with or without padding? 3. Your baren appears to be a flat 'door knob', have you experimented with Japanese or Speedball barens? Results? 4. Your preferred papers and inks? Thanks for sharing your lovely work!!

    • @valeriesyposz
      @valeriesyposz Місяць тому

      Thanks for the great questions! 1. If your stone is large, a levigator will be worth purchasing. If your stones are small like mine, it might not be the worth the cost, but you will still need something to move the grits over the surface of the stone for graining. A solid steel puck that will fit within your grasp is supposed to be a good option. I am trying to get myself something like that to help with the raised edges of my stones during graining., 2. I don't know. I know you can you use etching presses for plate litho, but the shape of the stone might make it difficult. If you were trying, a rubber blanket would be the best. I used to roll litho plates through the etching press with compressed cardboard backings and a thin felt. The plates didn't last as long as when printed on the litho press. I don't think I ever mastered the correct pressure for the etching press. 3. I have some japanese barens, but I prefer the solid wood for hand burnshing litho. Perhaps the bamboo covered baren for printing on extremely thin gampi paper. I sometimes use my disk baren first to make sure the print is flattened/stuck to the ink before going over with the wood. I think the speedball plastic one would do fine. 4. Anything gampi based for paper. The smoothness of the surface picks up the ink well and I love the natural tones. Masa paper is also a good choice and extremely reasonable in price. I always print on the smooth side. Inks are a combo of Graphic Chemical and Hanco. I use Setswell Compound if I ever need to loosen anything up.

    I was always curious as to how these litho rollers were constructed . . . whether the leather would have a smooth and not grained or a sueded finish...maybe something like Kangaroo. I'm still wondering what the leather is wrapped around...is it like a rolling pin or solid underneath or padded? The one mystery for me as well is how the leather is joined where the ends meet after wrapping around the roller base...as in my thinking if the join isn't flush you might end up with a crease line in the ink on your stone if not made flush somehow. The lamb tallow reminds me of when I used to work with leather and would make a concoction of Ivory soap and lard(soft-buttery-goopy consistency). I did a lot of round braiding(plaiting) so it was necessary for conditioning and lubricating as the strands had to slide easily to be pulled tight etc. I later resorted to just a thick froth of ivory and glycerin as the lard could be too messy and difficult to clean off of the work later. Anyway, I'm just reminiscing a bit. Thanks for the video...always educational.

    • @valeriesyposz
      @valeriesyposz 29 днів тому

      The leather has a sueded finish and is supposed to retain its nap. I think there is solid wood, perhaps with a little padding before the leather? I can imagine the difficulty of cleaning lard of your leather works! I will be doing the tallow treatment again soon to put it into temporary storage. Hopefully that will help when I take it out again. And yes, you have to be careful when scraping near the seam. You can tell on mine where the seam rolled over my ink slab, but that hasn't seemed to show up in the prints. I wouldn't be choosing it for a solid flat, however, and instead using my large rubber roller that is smooth all over.

  • @ThingOfSome
    @ThingOfSome Місяць тому

    It is probably a good idea to coat all of leather, not just where the ink was, since it conditions the leather to prevent it from drying out.

    If you want to do large size work find a metals store in your area and ask for a 1/16" or 1/8" aluminum sheet of whatever size you want. They'll cut to size and usually charge a multiple of today's market spot metals price x weight; example a 6"x10" piece would be $10 - $20, maybe a bit more depending on store and area. There's nothing special about these art sheets of aluminum, all aluminum sheet material is from one of 3 different grades of which one is affordable and the two others are mostly aerospace and expensive.
