  • Here are my first tests with cola etch on stone. Some success, some mini-failure, but overall a great experience.
I'll be back soon with a full drawing on stone!

Thanks for sharing this! I miss lithography so much and never in my wildest dreams thought it would be possible in a home setting without nasty chemicals. Feeling super inspired to give it a go!

It took me a few years of aluminum foil kitchen litho to get the courage to go back to stone in this manner. I am super happy I did!!!

Thanks for the bonus scene and it's great you didn't screw up the stone etching! I had no idea you could etch a stone with Coca-Cola, but it's way safer than nitric acid.

Thanks for watching all the way to the end!
For a home studio setting, which I have, I would not want to be dealing with nitric acid or solvents. So cola and oil is what I'm working with and I hope to make the best of it.

You are such a genius, just found out about your channel some days ago from my printing teacher at my university. Your work is insane and is really inspiring me, you should really post everything you have about litho, home litho on stone is so smart. Wish i could learn some more from you!! Best regards from brazil

Wonderful video series!! Did litho on stone at art school and thought I could never do it again because I don't like the nitric acid and I didn't have a litho press....but you have changed my whole perception of litho printing! Have kept my eye an a stone for sale and might be able to seriously consider it now. Would love to see more of your stone results. TFS!!

      Thanks!
It took me a while to get the courage to attempt stone litho at home, but I’m really glad I did. I have a lot more footage already … getting around to editing it into a video is the hard part!

Do you ever get scumming on stone? If so, is it as easy to remove as it would be on foil? Also, does there need to be a layer of standing water while you ink, or is it sufficient that the stone be saturated. I notice you sponge on water, but, it seems like there's no standing water on your stone surface when doing that...a mere film if anything. Your brayer seems really soft, too. Sorry for all the questions. Litho is my nemesis currently in the printing world. Really appreciate this series.

No problem about the questions. As you may know, the algorithm is more favourable to videos that have interaction. So your questions might help it be seen by others. Although I’m not sure how many of us out there are thinking about home lithography😂
I haven’t had much problems with scumming so far, just a few spots here and there that are easily picked up with the sponge.
No layer of water, the surface is saturated and that’s enough. When I first learnt litho, I used 2 sponges, a wetter one first to apply water and a drier one to wipe off excess. Now, I usually just use the one, slightly damp sponge. It’s easier for a one person setup.
I am indeed using a soft brayer. I found I prefer those for foil litho. I actually have an old leather roller in storage. Eventually I’ll get it out and attempt reconditioning it. Until then, the soft brayers will do.

How many time do you leave the arabic gum on the stone after the Cocacola? Thanks.
