Fixing Alternator Cord Rub on a 2022 Thor Sanctuary 19PT

The alternator cord runs through the passenger front wheel well on a Thor Sanctuary 19PT. Mine and some others have had a rubbing issue that is chewing the cord. I previously just reinforced the cord protector, but something came loose, and it pulled further into the wheel well and was rubbing more. Weather changed once van got up on lift, so I had to work quickly. If I was to routinely lift th...

Aluminess Tire Carrier Install on Thor Sanctuary Ford Transit Van with Vinyl Install too
…Thanks for pointing out the comments say they usual break at the hindge. Also dimension mention
You’re welcome
Thanks for the review and info. I see you went with the 12 foot propane hose? Do you think the 12 is still adequate or would you go with the 20' hose to get the noise out a little further from the van. Thanks.
I don’t mind the 12’ because I leave the generator strapped to the cargo carrier with exhaust pointed straight rearward. Noise isn’t too bad only because I’m using the generator for the air conditioner. Air conditioner drowns out any outside noises. But you’re right that I’m limited in distance because power outlet and gas outlet are on separate sides. Longer hose would be better to place generator on opposite side of van than sliding door and make camp side quieter.
@@jtbrv23 Cool. I'm going to have the same setup. Thanks.
@borandell9915 sure thing!
I like how you redid the back with the lithium system. Finally got my 19P back after the corroded propane switch, free to fix. I will pick up some of that T9, they have it at Camping World cheaper than Amazon. Have anyone noticed how Amazon isn't cheap like it used to. I am thinking of removing those magazine racks to, while mines don't rattle, they do add inches in the way. Great videos. Will check out your tire rack, I'm looking to get one now.
I have noticed that Amazon doesn’t seem better for most name brand items. They are good for the variety of stuff. And the shipping has gotten slower.
@@jtbrv23 Agreed
I tested running my ac and plugged into normal house outlet and the battery was being charged. I think I could just get a 1000w generator and it would work?
My van hates house power from the normal outlet. I don’t know why, but my garage outlets are the surge protected style. Maybe the van pulls too much too quick and trips them. I would still want more than 1000W personally, maybe more like 2000W. If you do give it a shot then let us know because 1000W is much more portable.
@@jtbrv23 your house breaker box might have a 15amp not 20amp fuse. Of course you would change that to match in the van. The switch/fuse will have a number on it indicating the amps.
Nice never heard of it just bought a can Thanks
Yeah, pretty versatile stuff. It’s a nice alternative to using the messy dielectric grease on electrical.
Good tip. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
At the propane switch as you mentioned.
Thanks, will try that, it is a constant battle for me with rust and they having been winning year after year. The funny thing, my switch was just corroded, it's under warranty, so it's so funny you said that. Continue the videos, they are so helpful.
Thanks. Another user had theirs corrode too and they mentioned it to me. That switch is in a terrible spot. I was surprised it wasn’t full of debris.
I tried this on my 2018 Ford transit and it fixed the problem. No wind noise.
That’s good. I haven’t had the wind noise problem since doing this either.
Are you able to do the install on the ground without removing the wheels? Or does it need wheels removed and or the front end lifted?
I installed with the wheels on and van on ground and it was ok. I can’t remember now but I believe the instruction assume wheels stay on and a couple times you just have to turn them to gain more access. Obviously it’s probably easier in the air with wheels off, but not necessary.
@@jtbrv23 thank you!
@wplate not a problem at all
@@jtbrv23 I don’t understand how you drilled the quarter inch hole with the wheel on, everything else is pretty easy
@wplate even with wheel turned left? I don’t remember having trouble with the drilling portion. I did struggle some with the center punch because mine isn’t spring loaded and needed a hammer. So two arms.
I will check it again asap but where did you get the bottle jack and scissor jack ?
I put a link for the bottle jack in description, it’s from Amazon. Scissor jack is for my car and I would not recommend it for van. It’s only 1.5 ton capacity. I just grabbed something real quick when the wind started.
@@jtbrv23 hello I checked it and it was frayed! I got some electrical tap and repaired the frayed housing as the cable was ok. I then usewwd 2 zip ties to secure the repaired cable housing to 2 area of the nearby chassis. Looks great but will periodically check. Thans for your safety updates on this vehicle!
@junglehomes6525 I’m glad you checked. Mine was similar, the wire wasn’t chewed up yet but the protective sleeve was damaged.
@@jtbrv23 I was wondering if you have a hand held propane gas leak detector and which one you recommend?
@junglehomes6525 I don’t. I wouldn’t even know where to point you. Do you think you have a leak? I believe the inside of van has a propane detector near floor by back seat.
I have a sanctuary also, I have been looking at the Coachmen Beyond, same floor plan with the rear bench. Van is 2-feet longer to start with so you gain some room behind the driver. Overall nicer features and the side and rear door screens are built in.
Yeah, the Beyond is a potential. I would probably go with the opposing twins if given the option rather than rear bench. I like that you can make it a big bed or just keep it as twin ish style beds. Sometimes I feel like trying to funnel off the bottom of our bed is a little difficult.
Hi, what is the torque spec for the arms that hold the tire? The installation instructions I got from Aluminess doesn't say. The bolts are 1/4inx20 and I have them at 5ft/lbs. Doesn't seem very tight to me. I haven't installed the carrier as I am waiting for the top hinge (they sent wrong one) so I don't know if 5ft/lbs is sufficient.
I didn’t have a torque spec either. I just did hand tight but I used an Allen wrench. I didn’t want to over torque it since it’s only aluminum. I did make sure that they were tight enough to not have any play in the arms.
JTB - I'm looking at a New 2023 Thor Tranquility 19LT (Ford AWD Transit). The build and features really look to fit our needs. Can you tell me a bit about how all the Cabinetry is holding Up, etc. I know there are some other nice Builds out there with the Lightweight Aluminum Cabinets and Kitchen Inserts, but they are Pricey, and wifey is'nt really fond of the Gray Military Color schemes they use. thx, Ted
The cabinetry along the ceiling is holding up great. The cabinets attached to the floor are little more flimsy feeling but are holding up ok. They get scuffed up easier. Appliances, water systems, electrical systems are all holding up. Electrical might be a little underpowered compared to nicer builds. If you like staying cool in hot climates you will probably need a generator because the ac drinks your battery. I’m very proactive with maintaining stuff, so maybe I save some headaches. Wood panels might peel a little or a lot, very variable but it was a recall so new ones might not be affected. My other videos have gone through basically all my upgrades and problems along the way.
I have the sprinter version of the 19P (Synergy), and used your idea to make the shelf. I couldn't do the rear indent because my battery is mounted further aft (i don't know why) so I just reinstalled the rear piece. This provides actual storage while still giving airflow around the components.I used aluminum angle on the sides to support the wire shelving thus negating the wavy top of the sides and also giving me a way to mount the wire shelving using zip ties. Didn't have to notch the wire shelving around the steel uprights since my width is the same as the original piece. Thanks for the excellent idea and how-to video.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching
How’s it holding up
It’s doing pretty good. I switched to using the propane, slightly less power but even more quiet. I carry two gallons of gas in a rotopax just in case. That way I don’t need to store fuel in it. Propane can still run A/C and charge batteries at same time.
@@jtbrv23 that’s awesome I have a delta pro with two batteries and panels but for the days the sun doesn’t come out I’m thinking this would be a great option! I have a 13k portable generator but it’s a bit overkill
@dieseldawg7132 just a bit. I’m similar, a little smaller with a Delta 2 and extra panels. Use it to run small things that require inverter and not run down house batteries overnight. Generator is really just for those days that require air conditioner and shore power isn’t an option.
@@jtbrv23 funny thing I’m in Houston, Tx and we been having some insane weather lately…. I run a few things from the delta pro set up… mainly 2 refrigerators and some portable air conditioners… usually run our bedroom a/c all night long…. I’m thinking I’m definitely going for the wen 4500 trying to hold out for prime day hope I can get it at a great price… last year got the xp13000eh for about $899 instead of $1400
Nice. Thats the way to do it for big items. This weather has been madness. It’s nice knowing you have some self reliance and you’re blending solar and gas powered too.
Yes, that’s the area but there’s no cover. There’s 2 buss bars. One positive and one negative. I was working on the alternator wire rub and tracing that wire back is where I discovered the issue. I was able to maneuver the wire in the wheel well and add zip ties to get it away from the tire. Another item you should check out is the LPG switch. Ours failed last year on a trip because it filled with debris from the road and rotted out. It’s more exposed wiring.
It must be cheaper/easier to run the wiring outside. I couldn’t believe how much was under the van. I will double check mine and see if it still has a cover. If I remember right, the cover didn’t seem weathertight, more like just a barrier from touching the connections. It was clear. I wonder why they wouldn’t use something more weatherproof? My cable in wheel well has almost zero play but I’m going to see what I can do with it.
Have you checked under the back of the van? I have a similar Thor van and have discovered that there’s unprotected 12v wiring connections. Does your van have the same situation?
I will probably look under there tomorrow when I take my cargo carrier off. Too rainy today. I feel like I have seen a spot where two wires meet at a terminal and it has a flimsy plastic cover over the top. Where would you say it was that you saw yours? I will be under there tomorrow if it dries out and I’m also going to reinforce the alternator cable in the passenger front wheel well that’s getting chewed up by the tire.
Checked today, I see what you’re saying. I had one bar with a cover still on it but a bar with 4 connections uncovered. Some oxidation. I have a spray, sort of dielectric grease, but more like wax that I use on my mower. I will give it a try, make a video. I also gained some slack in alternator cable by repositioning it under passenger door. It’s gonna be a couple days due to weather and working but maybe Friday I will fix them up.
I found buss bars at a local boating supply so I’m going to replace them with new ones that have screw on covers. I think that will resolve the issue.
great video glad you got that all fixed same here I have to drive 1 hr to Tampa for dealer
Thanks for watching
We looked at rear bath but then you lose looking out back with the doors open when parked at a nice place. Everytime you need to empty the cassette toliet both back doors needing to be opened letting in rain or lots of mosquitoes in.
Valid point. I actually wonder why they oriented the toilet that way unless the walkway just doesn’t give enough space to remove the cassette.
After I compared the Sprinter to the Transit AWD 350 it became clear that a Mercedes diesel just didn't make sense not to mention the comparison of repair issues and delays for the Sprinter. That being said good luck with the trade-in prospects as I hear that Lazy Days is making hot deals on trade-ins at its Tampa Florida location and has plenty of 2024 inventory.
Thanks. I’m very far from the trade in point. Don’t even know what I want yet. Just going to start shopping. I need the northern dealers to get a Palladium 1910 so I can see a Transit Trail in person.
I didn't see #1. 😁😁😁
The best combo was Thetford Aqua Bio and Basic toilet paper
@fortheloveofstripes3578 as long as you didn’t use the super plush they were all similar. But that combination did have the bigger weight drop.
I can not agree that service for a Ford or an MB is equally available. I think you are the exception, 3000 Ford dealerships in theU.S.. I have three Ford dealers within 20 miles and one MB dealer who doesn't work on Sprinters. Last summer I had a check engine light in Goose Bay, Labrador. Ford to the rescue. No MB dealer within 300 miles. I recently needed service and polled the three Ford dealers to see which one could see me soonest (two days).
I wasn’t really trying to say they are equal just that assuming every dealership has the ability to service. I do live in a horrible place though. My car has a recall and I will have to take it to Madison. You could also make an argument for Ford because of the parts available since Ford is such a popular brand, especially F150s which we probably share some parts with. It was more just not to make the assumption so hopefully people look into it before buying.
I am greatfull I don't have to winterize my rig, but nice to know how to if I ever needed. I am curious, have you ever used the inside shower? I still haven't figured out how to use the hot water recycle valve thing and hot water indicator when using the shower , but maybe mine just doesn't work. But also I have never really used the inside shower, usually just use the outside one.
I haven’t used it. My shower miser control knob is reversed though. I noticed that when turned to what I thought was not recirculate, my water pump just kept running and making a slurp sound. Turned the opposite and it quit. In orientation it took a long time for the blue indicator to turn slightly white/grey. And it was not super obvious when changing color. In all honesty, since orientation, I have just left my water heater bypassed. Less areas to winterize and I don’t need hot water anyway.
@@jtbrv23 ok so it’s not just me then. Good to know.
Never pulled the trigger cus of the quality of RVs.
I know it. You really have to put some effort in to stay on top of things. There are a lot of horror stories out there too.
Very cool video, I want to road trip myself around the United States someday.
It will be worth the effort! Thanks for watching
I didnt realize the fuel cost is so high now that I see it, ouch. A few others perks at least for me are the money I save on food. It's much easier to bring my own meals and cook with the van vs. if I were to stay in hotels I would be going out to eat. I also save money on dog sitters because with the van I can bring my larger dog with me and not have to leave it at home. Also, waking up to awesome sunrises in the middle of nowhere all make it worth it.
Fuel cost gave me a moment when I scrolled to it. You’re spot on with your perks too. I should have mentioned food. Just avoiding snacks from a gas station is a huge saver.
My ‘21 EcoBoost 350HD DRW EL HR is getting the exact same average mileage (14.7 mpg). I’m always fully laden too.
Nice. I really feel like wind resistance is our biggest issue. No matter how heavy I load the van there doesn’t seem to be negative consequences on MPG.
@@jtbrv23 excellent point! When I have a head/angle wind at my front, mpg tanks to 10/11
Good gas mileage I only get 10mpg great video
Thanks. Is that 10mpg mostly just around town? If I do a lot of city it closer to 11. I have a lot of hwy miles to offset that.
@@jtbrv23 yea I get 13 on a trip but installing suspension upgrade and bigger tires and wheels so I am thinking 9mpg
@OverlandCitrus ouch. But it will look good 😎
@@jtbrv23 yeah for sure
Excellent breakdown, simply put a campervan is a toy in most scenarios.. nothing wrong with toys but just something people need to be mindful of financially
Yep. It would be a very small percentage of people who could make it work as a financial benefit. Pretty much full time van life.
Thanks for sharing. Is your Transit Eco Boost one? What’s the app you use to log the trips/mileages?
Yep, it’s the ecoboost. The fuel tracking app I use is called Fuelly.
My Storyteller Mode LT (based on 2022 Transit 350 HR cargo AWD gas) has about 10-12 miles average, also mostly highway. Do you get even better fuel efficiency if using Eco drive mode? Also just curious how big are your fresh water tank and grey water tank? Do you usually have them filled up while moving?
@dcflin 19 gallon fresh water and 20 gallon grey. I don’t use eco on interstate or when charging off alternator. Not recommended for interstate speeds I think per manual. But currently I’m driving to Lake Superior and I just fueled up and got 18 mpg. This drive is small towns and county hwy only so I am using eco mode right now. Nothing over 55mph and flat driving today.
Interesting, I was wondering what that device is on your wind screen just beside the rear view mirror? Also, I had the rear view camera recall finally replaced. I did have to go to the dealer 2 separate times the first of which was to confirm the specific camera part required as Ford has had various problems with these cams on different models and vehicles. Once they had the exact specific part for the Ford Transit 350 they notified me and I went back the second time for the installation. Fortunately for me it is less than 30 miles roundtrip. So far its been about a month and I have not had a blue screen return.
It’s a dash cam. It’s a Garmin Mini 2 specifically. It’s the lowest model they offer and really just for incident recording. Since I’m driving so far the dealership had me send them photos of the Transit’s door sticker that has all the manufacturers stuff. Hopefully it works out. My blue screen seems to happen more and more frequently.
The cheapest is $37. I dont know where you are finding them for $17.
Oh sorry, the price of the shower is $17. Kinda pricey. I don’t fully understand how they determine the rv spot, maybe amenities and location. But you’re right, mid 30’s is probably the best price I’ve had and Jacksonville might have been mid 50’s. I will update description to clarify. Thanks
I Love Loves (Pun intended). I have been to several across the south. I have never seen one with an RV spot though, that would be nice. I have crashed in their parking lot a few times and they were always ok with it, can get kind of loud but when you're in a pinch... Their amenities are top notch, they do a really good job. I also use their dog parks often. How's Florida for RV/s Vans? Thinking of making my way out there this summer.
Yeah. We literally map out the Loves on our trips and try to stop at them. Definitely number 1 choice when we drive. If you have the Loves app you can change filter to show RV hookup spots. They are slowly adding more. Florida seemed friendly to RVs as far as places to stay. The weather was bad for us so we didn’t stay as long as intended. We drove up to Kitty Hawk North Carolina and spent 5 days there. I personally liked Kitty Hawk better only because I really don’t like super humid. Plan on lots of power consumption for the air conditioner down there during the summer.
Wow very impressive video can't wait to check out the Love's truck stop facilities!
Yeah, this trip was the first time I used the showers and I was sort of nervous. But it was so easy I thought I should make a video. I forgot to mention to take shower shoes (they sell flip flops in store). Shower is clean but you never know.
Was wondering if you shared or is that not allowed?
If two people wanted to use the shower it is ok. Just don’t open the door a lot. After 10-15 min of showering, if the door opens, it sends a signal to them to clean. There are extra mechanical locks like a hotel room door, so they don’t accidentally come in if that situation happens.
I have the Jayco Terrain and was using Rux collapsible "boxes" and bags. Extremely modular and works great with my l track in my van. Very light weight and has side rails so everything clips in on the inside and outside rails and you can collapse everything.
I had to look those up, never heard of them before. They had versatility in mind when they designed them. Even durable enough for outside of vehicle on a roof rack. Pretty awesome!
Hello.. Thank you for always good information. I have a question..? Where did you purchase the ford transit spare tire and steel wheel..? I like the design..! I also recently purchased a tire carrier rack and i am planning to install it..!! I bought the same thing. Is there anything I need to be careful about when installing it..?
Finding the matching steel wheel was actually a huge headache and they were very expensive. This wheel is a Voxx G-FX MV2 and I ordered through Discount Tire. Looks better and was better price than steel wheel, around $200. For install I would say make sure you have a correct size torq bit for 3 screws inside door near handle and maybe spray them with WD40 prior to trying to unscrew. They used a thread locker and I think are T30. I sheared the head of one off and had to drill it out. Also install pegs first thing, makes it easier and you can make them level. Here is a link to my install video. I also took the time to vinyl back doors to protect paint. ua-cam.com/video/D-CV1WE0IPM/v-deo.htmlsi=NMoS7v13_5745DHP

I end up watching the video AFTER I did mine but OMG it sure Ford wants us to use their mechanics to even do this simple task. Thanks for the video man.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching
Did you get to see the eclipse? Or was it cloud covered?
Yep, clear skies in Sikeston MO. Got some good photos. Ended up extending the trip and cruising up the east coast. Will post a video once home and can pull photos. Hopefully you were able to see it too.
We took our 2023 19P to Arkansas for the eclipse. First trip in the van and first eclipse. Hope you got some good pics. We had great weather and it was amazing. We are using storage boxes in the cabinets and pantry area to organize things. Liked your mod in the battery area - looks like wasted space so might try that idea with the wire shelving.
That’s awesome. We ended up in Sikeston, MO. We did get some good pics and I will post them. We extended the trip a little. Hope your trip went well. That first shakedown trip is a learning experience.
What cargo weight are you rated for?
My cargo carrying capacity is 1740lbs.
Would love to know if you thought you over packed or was it just right! - Enjoy the eclipse
In the end we didn’t need the generator or fuel. Ended up in Sikeston MO and found a nice spot under a tree to shade van. Food was for sure an overpack. There wasn’t a shortage of food. Everything else packed was about right. Eclipse was amazing and well worth the drive.
Travel safe
Thanks. Will do
Good check list for sure
Thanks
All great ideas, I guess I’m lazy and just depend on what the dash says for oil life and tire pressure. my sealants on the roof had a small leak, didn’t even notice looking at it until it rained and water was coming in around the vent. Now I always carry a can of liquid rubber. Where’s the next long trip ? I’m thinking of hitting up the souther states this summer.
Next big trip will be the eclipse this weekend. Although it’s looking not as big now since Indiana and Ohio are the actual best targets for us. I don’t think Maine is an option due to traffic. Before, Indiana was the first stop to evaluate next step. We will see though. Weather will change but we will stay mobile. I carry liquid rubber too. Just a tiny aerosol can. Looks like they will have storms in Ohio valley so hopefully no leaks.
It’s a Ford Transit chassis, and it will drive like a car for Sure
Oh yeah. Very easy driver. You do get reminded in a crosswind though.
Do you see any impact on DRL after changing to LED lights? Thanks.
I actually don’t run DRL. When I first got the van I didn’t think I had DRL because they didn’t come on with autolamp. I learned after I got LED headlights that there is a setting in the dash menu to enable if equipped. I haven’t verified if I do have it or not. At this point I just leave it alone because I’ve read that the reduced power could damage some LED bulbs.
My DRL will be on only if I shift to D gear when autolamp. You might want to check if that’s the case for you too. Mine is 2022.
@dcflin yeah that’s what I tried at first but nothing came on so I assumed I didn’t have them. There is a driver settings menu from the steering wheel controls that can enable DRL. I haven’t looked to see if I have that option but I imagine I do and it’s just not enabled.
Very interesting custom made for aluminess tire rack auxiliary gas can attachment device. I don't know how you find these things? I do have a technical question that you may or may not be aware of so here goes. I noticed what seemed like abnormal energy consumption of the battery life and could not account for it. I checked that my inverter was in the off position on the lower screen and it was BUT I also checked the inverter itself and it was on? So it appears that when you slide to the off position on the lower screen you simply cannot use your microwave or air conditioner BUT your inverter is still on consuming battery power? Now if I shut off both the screen slide switch AND the actual shut off switch on the inverter I am no longer wasting battery power. Could you please comment on this I would appreciate it. Thank you!
The tire rack gas can credit goes to Aluminess. They had the forethought to make that wedge fit a rotopax so kudos to them. Now the energy thing. I have noticed this before. It is evening now and so I went outside and ran the numbers. With inverter on, I draw about 2-3ah. When I switch it off on the touchscreen it drops to about 0.8 to 1ah. Nothing is lit up on inverter at this point and it appears and sounds off. If I hit the physical switch to off then the amps drops to 0-0.3ah. So I’m experiencing a similar scenario. If I’m for sure not going to charge van or run anything off inverter, I leave the physical switch off. If there is any chance I might charge van, then I make sure the physical switch is on. The inverter also participates in charging from A/C power. I think of it like a computer and how it asks if you want to do standby (instant on) or shut down. This way I know if I connect to shore power, it should instantly accept the charge safely and hopefully not have an issue.
This all came to my attention when they changed out my Rv Master control pad and I was not seeing any benefit from the solar controller so
Thanks for sharing 👍, I believed this is the passenger van, what did you do to the back air vents?
It was already built out when we got it so I’m not too sure how the addressed the vents if there were any.
