A Trick of the Tail is probably my favorite Genesis album - PG’s 3rd album is probably my favorite solo - Possibly Phil’s Both Sides and Ant’s The Geese and the Ghost

Sorry but I lived through the 80s and Phil absolutely sold out and cashed in. He made that choice.

I find that I’m revisiting Wind and Wuthering a lot along with the 2007 double cd live album, “live over Europe.” Man that is good!! Favourite album though is “Trick of the Tail.” That album has it all for me.

No shade, just feel like I’ve heard it enough Fav solo, if I gotta pick 1: PG Us Controversial: don’t wanna say Least fav: Chris Stewart Least fav track: In Hiding Remove: nah. It is what it is. Heard live: Where The Sour Turns to Sweet Lunch: Phil 1000%. Back in time: The Lamb definitely.

    1) We Can't Dance 2) Calling All Stations 3) But Seriously 4) Phil is better than Peter 5) Steve Hackett 6) Illegal Alien 7) Calling All Stations, GtoR is a different sound yes but I think its decent in its own right as a stand alone. 8) Man of our times 9) Phil of course! 10) Invisible Touch

    1. Duke, at the moment. Selling England overall. 2. Calling All Stations 3. Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte 4. And Then There Were Three... Is a really immersive, atmospheric album , perfect to listen to in full on a late evening drive. 5. (More frustration than least favourite, but) Mike Rutherford, produced so much great music in the 'prog' era, yet seems so dismissive of much of it. 6. I Can't Dance. 7. Calling All Stations 8. Dodo/Lurker/Submarine/Naminanu as a live suite, like the Duke suite. 9. Not the obvious Peter/Phil like you, Mike Rutherford, because I want to figure him out! 10. Having seen The Musical Box do the excellent Selling England tour, and having seen the Duke tour video, both of which I'd love to have seen live originally, I'd alternatively have to choose the Lamb tour, as I think it would be something special to experience with Peter in it's original form, re-enactments or the footage we have probably don't do it justice.

1, Seconds Out 2, Calling All Stations 3, Voyage of the Acolyte - Steve Hackett 4, Supper's Ready on Seconds Out is better than the studio version 5, Can't answer that one 6, Keep it Dark 7, Revelations 8, Twilight Alehouse 9, Steve Hackett 10, Selling England (I saw The Musical Box do it years ago, mind blowing) I saw Genesis in 1978 at Knebworth and on the Calling All Stations tour; that one was a bit weird tbh.

Fun video!! Thanks! 1. Duke (generally, I tend to listen to the 1980-1986 period the most) 2. Trespass (I don't generally even think of FGTR as a Genesis album) 3. Hello, I Must Be Going (I really like Gabriel's Us and considered that as my answer, but I just love Phil's stuff too much. I think Us is better than So.) 4. Wind and Wuthering is just "OK." Maybe "The Brazilian is much better than "Do the Neurotic." 5. Gabriel if I'm honest (only thinking of core five; leaving out Ant and Ray) Not sure Hackett's presence was really felt until he left. Their sound totally changed. Ironic he is out there playing mostly Genesis these days... 6. I think I like them all but a few that just haven't grabbed me over the years for one reason or anouther include: Who Dunnit; Ballad of Big; Your Own Special Way; Small Talk; Alien Afternoon; Tell Me Why; Squonk; All in a Mouse's Night; Epping Forest; Giant Hogweed. 7. FGTR if I include the album. Otherwise, it's Calling All Stations, but only if I had known they'd only do one with Ray. A distant third is Musical Box. 8. I would have loved to have seen the end of Supper's Ready live, as well as Behind the Lines; Duke's Travels/Duke's End; Deep in the Motherlode; Dodo/Lurker. Of ones they didn't ever do live, I'd say You Might Recall or Cul de Sac. 9. Tony (Phil would be fun as well but not sure how forthcoming he would be. Same with Mike.) 10. Duke tour for sure. Mama tour a close second, tied with the shows in support of Three Sides Live right behind it. (Invisible Touch tour in '87 was my first. Paul Young opened, and when he sang his big hit "Everytime You Go Away" and asked the crowd to sing with him, the entire stadium stayed quiet until "Go Away," which was then screamed very loudly. Not a Paul Young crowd.)

    1. And Then There Were Three 2. From Genesis To Revelation 3. Peter Gabriel 3 - Melt 4. I prefer Phil Collins Genesis to Peter Gabriel, although I love both 5. Ray Wilson although he’s a fine singer 6. Afterglow……never liked it and sick of hearing it 7. Calling All Stations. Pretty boring album. At least the debut shows some creativity and the seeds of what was to come 8. Too hard…move on 9. Phil. 10. Trick Of The Tail tour

    1. In my youth, Invisible Touch. 2.and then there were three. 3. Phil Collins But Seriously, Peter Gabriel secret world. 4. I didn't like the fact that they did not invite Steve and Chester in the last tour as well as Peter didn't want to join the band to sing. 5. Difficult to answer, but Anthony Phillips. He was not brave enough to accept the challenge with all his talent. 6. The lamb lies down on broadway. 7. From genesis to revelation. The songs sound outdated. 8. Calling all stations sing by Phil. Banjo man. 9.Tony Banks. 10. Three sides lives. Nice survey, but try not influence the answers of your viewer (indirectly).

They will never release this until Phil would be dead. The shows were really subpar with Phil basically limping to the finish line. It was nice to see Nick, Tony and Mike play. But beyond that the shows were just acceptable.

Wind and Wuthering Calling All Stations Phil Collins: Serious Hits - Live I prefer the Phil era over the Peter era and I like "Who Dunnit" and "Illegal Alien" Steve (great musician but seems like a dick) "Your Own Special Way" Calling All Stations "Glamour Profession" I don't know. I had high hopes for this album. It didn't live up to my hope of a great return to classic prog, but it has a few good songs and is a lot better than the last two albums with Phil. Fans should not hate on Calling All Stations, they should give it another listen.

Most played album: 1983 Shapes album Least played album: And Then There Were Three Favorite Solo Album: No Jacket Required Controversial opinion album: Trick of the Tail is way overrated, and basically a two track album with Sqounk and Los Endos being the standouts Least favorite member: Tony Banks, simply based on how fast he talks, and his overall uptight attitude, but NOT based on his musical ability whatsoever. Least favorite track: I Can’t Dance What could be removed: And Then There Were Three, because I still feel like it is not a proper first trio album from them. It should have been Duke as the first album for them as a trio. Live Pick: Domino. Still my favorite like song ever from them. Lunch: Mike Rutherford, because he would crack me up the whole time, and is a fantastic storyteller. Tour I would have loved to see: Wind and Wuthering tour. Their first with Chester, and the bridge between the different eras of the band

Album (s) I listen to the most: Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Nursery Cryme Listen to the Least: You Can't Dance, Invisible Touch, Calling All Stations Favorite Solo Album: Peter Gabriel III ("Melt") Most Controversial Opinion: I gave up on Phil Collins post self-titled album (other than drum skills). This is where I became uninterested in new Genesis music, and I grew tired of his solo albums. Sorry - respect his musicianship, and I enjoyed him when I saw him on the Duke tour, but my musical tastes grew towards punk, alternative, and other types of music during this time (while retaining a love for prog and heavy music). Rank Genesis members (favorite to least favorite): Gabriel, Hackett (especially with him keeping prog Genesis music alive), Banks, Collins, Rutherford, Phillips Least favorite Genesis Track: Illegal Alien Album want removed from catalog: Calling All Stations (if I don't include it), We Can't Dance What Genesis song do I wish I could hear live: Can Utility and the Coastliners Which Genesis Member would You like to have lunch with: Peter Gabriel Which Genesis tour would you like to see: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour

    1) Shapes I'd say I choose this most often. Three Sides Live is right there. 2) And Then There Were Three. 3) But Seriously. 4) Phil Collins Genesis' Albums are better than Peter's era. 4B) Driving the Last Spike is one of their top 4 songs. 5) I don't have a least favorite. All great in their own way. Tony appears to have the least fun personality. But I really have nothing bad to say other than that. 6) Who Dunnit. It's not close. Can't believe it made the album. 7) Genesis to Revelation 8) I always wanted to hear You Might Recall. 9) Phil. 10) The Shapes tour...It was my first time seeing them live, it was at the LA Forum I believe it was 85'. I was 16. We were in the 15th row on the floor and it was incredible. They played from the albums I had heard of at that time and loved it. So, that's the one. Saw the Invisible Touch tour at Dodger Stadium and the sound and visuals were not great at a stadium tour.

    1. Selling England 2. FGTR 3. The Fugitive. (Which could be an answer to 4) (^_^) 4. I think a second album with Ray would have turned out great. Where Mike and Tony wrote specifically for Ray's voice and they were more used to writing as a duo or as a trio with Ray. With the exception of Trick of the Tail, second albums after a lineup change are always tons better than the previous. I'm not an apologist or CAS. I think it's fair to middling, but I feel the same about ATTWT, and I thought Duke hit it out of the park. I just think Mike and Tony would have figured out their weaknesses with CAS and written much better for the next one that never happened. I think Mike hanging it up at that point is one of the parts that leads me to my selection of question 5. Another 4, Keep it Dark is one of my all-time favorite Genesis songs. 5. Hate to pick any of the five (six), but if I have to, Mike. 6. Whodunnit, of course. Always skip it. 7. FGTR. I just don't listen to it. I don't really wish it could be removed. I can quite easily ignore it, and that's enough for me. 8. All of them. Never got to go to a live show. Sniff. (I beat myself up for not knowing about them when they played my home town growing up.) 9. Tony. I love how he talks about things in interviews, and I think talking with him would be a lot of fun. 10. Either the Duke tour or the Wind and Wuthering tour.

My brother and I had been joking by the mid 80's that Phil was everywhere. We thought that he should have sang "stu-stu-studio" instead of "su--sussudio" since he seemed to live at recording studios (probably why he couldn't make a marriage work). I think appearing at both Live-aid shows just topped everything off. In my eyes, he had become nothing more than a "musical mercenary". That being said, I certainly never hated Phil, just kind of got sick of him and, because of that, got sick of Genesis. All these years later, I can appreciate the later albums he made with Genesis but, at the time, I had no interest whatsoever.

Calling All Stations 8. Can-Utility and the Coastliners 9. Peter Gabriel 10. The Lamb Tour. Easy... In terms of Supers Ready, all of the prog epics from that period were written in that way. Smaller song ideas pieced together. The only exception I'm aware of being Gate of Delirium by Yes. Apparently Jon Anderson came up with the whole thing on his own, or most of it.

Your controversial opinion is incorrect because Tony used his classical education to help build suppers ready from all those disparate parts. The 7th section is a recapitulation of the 3rd section after the reprise of the first section. Yes it’s disparate parts, all epics are made this way. You just don’t like suppers ready and that’s fine.

    1. When I was younger it was definitely And The There were Three, my Dad made a tape copy of it in the 80s and I played it to death. Nowadays it's probably The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, I finally understand that album, as I didn't get it when I was younger. 2. Least is FGTR without a doubt, I listened to it lots when I first bought it on vinyl, but after then I have not listened to it in about 10 years or so. Not a bad album, just a bit different to anything else. 3. Favourite by far is Face Value, very diverse and magical album. 4. The Live Version of Supper's Ready on Seconds Out is 10 times better than the studio version, Phil's vocals pack a punch, in comparison with some of Peter's vocal deliveries at the time. 5. Tony Banks, He is a genius and probably a really nice guy, I just think he can be a bit grumpy. 6. Least favourite track is Taking It All Too Hard, I don't think it's a bad song but I've heard it to the point at which it doesn't interest me in anyway anymore. 7. I feel like Calling All Stations should have done much much better commercially then it did, it still follows on from the catchy pop theme of We Can't Dance and has 80s prog moments. FGTR just doesn't fit in with the rest of the discography. 8. Mad Man Moon, the piano playing is mind-blowing, should have been done as part of the Trick or Wind Tours. I would have chosen Do The Neurotic, but There is footage someone on You tube of it being played Live, So It doesn't count. 9. Phil Collins by far, love the man, and he is the inspiration for me as a musician. 10. 1982 Encore Tour, I feel it gets forgotten, it also has performances of Me and Virgil, Paperlate, Like it Or Not, and apparently some other tracks from shows we don't have yet.

Wind and Wurthering has always been my favourite Genesis album. I listen to this fairly regularly. The 2 Genesis tracks I play The most are Ripples and Heathaze.

    1. Album most heavily played: Selling England, Foxtrot, Second’s Out 2. Listen to least: Calling All Stations, it’s the only Genesis album I don’t own. 3. Favorite Genesis solo Album: Collins’s, No Jacket Required 4. Controversial opinion: I’m not a fan of Steve Hackett. I respect what he did in the band, and he is extremely talented, it just isn’t my style. To counter your answer, Supper’s Ready is a masterpiece in my opinion. 5. Ray Wilson and or Steve Hackett 6. Least Favorite Song: Calling all Stations 7. Calling all Stations 8. The Knife; I know it’s on video. But I wish I could have seen it live. 9. Lunch: Peter, Phil, or Tony. I cannot pick. 10. I would like to see them live in the early days with Peter. Possibly before they achieved a lot of fame.

    1) A Trick of the Tail 2) Calling all Stations 3) Voyage of the Acolyte 4) ABACAB (the album) sounds like a collection of studio outtakes; uninspired song writing and a significant drop in quality from Duke 5) Rutherford - Great musician, great guy but arguably the most replaceable. 6) Illegal Alien or I can't Dance 7) Calling all Stations - I never regarded it as a Genesis album, more a Banks/Rutherford project with some hired hands. A Genesis album needs Phil or Pete on vocals, and certainly Phil on drums. 8) Undertow 9) Steve Hackett 10) Either The Lamb or Duke

    1. I've probably listened to The Lamb the most, because it requires more concentrated listening. But I usually rotate through the whole collection equally. So it's a hard call. 2. The one I listen to least is Calling All Stations, because it's the only Genesis album I refuse to have in my collection. It's one of 3 albums that came out around the same time that I feel exist mainly to insult my intelligence. The others being ELP's In The Hot Seat and Yes's Open Your Eyes. 3a. My favorite is probably Wind And Wuthering, possibly because it was the first Genesis album I bought, but I think there is a kind of pathos to it that really gets to me. Not that they don't have that on other albums, they just really went all in on it with this one. 3b. Favorite solo album is difficult. There's a lot to remember. Apparently I relate to Steve Hackett's solo albums more than the others. And my favorite Steve album is Spectral Mornings. My favorites from other members would be The Geese And The Ghost from Ant, Face Value from Phil, Bankstatement from Tony, and the album with Games Without Frontiers from Pete. Mike's solo stuff I find the hardest to get into. 4. Actually, Supper's Ready died of overkill for me a long time ago. But on the whole, Genesis is a hard band to find anything bad to say about. I'd have far more controversial things to say about ELP or Yes. But I'm sure other fans would disagree. So I'm going to say my most controversial take on Genesis is that their output from Genesis To Revelation to We Can't Dance demonstrates a perfect body of work that constantly progressed from a perfect beginning to a perfect and well-defined end. This I can not say about any other band of their era, who all lost their vision and put out duds from time to time. But Genesis never put out a dud album, until Calling All Stations, which to me is an unwanted anti-climax that should not be allowed to mar their previous perfection. 5. My least favorite member would be Mike, mainly because I don't like his solo stuff. But also because I'm the least aware of what he contributes to the band. I'm sure I'd miss him if you took him out of the mix, and then I'd be like, "Oooh, that's what Mike does." But he's the only member whose contributions aren't sonically stamped with his name on them to my ears most of the time. Consequently, I value him less than the others. But, if I could pick the components of the music apart and see what parts are his, I'd probably find he's just as valuable to me as any of the others. 6. Least favorite Genesis track. Mama. Only song I ever skip over on a Genesis album. It's too long and I really don't like the electronic vocal sounds on it. In a way it's one of the Proggiest things they did in the 80's, and it kind of calls back to The Musical Box, but it just sounds awful, gives off a creepy vibe and goes on for far too long. 7. Which record needs to be removed. Calling All Stations, for reasons previously stated. You can apologize for it all you want. But an apologist just makes excuses for the un-excusable. They never really justify anything. The reason you don't get the transition from Genesis To Revelation to Trespass is because there's a whole album's worth of unreleased tracks in between them. I had a friend who collected them and put them in order of development. And it effectively provided the missing link. 8. Well, outside of video I never saw Genesis live. So, technically all of them. But, since there is no footage of The Lamb I will take The Lamb as one 90 minute tune and say not seeing that live is my biggest regret. 9. None, really. I'm a really shy person and a terrible conversationalist. I was stuck in a bar with Ambrosia once because their bus was late, and I said not a word to them. I left the talking up to a friend who was more a fan of them than I was. And I had a similar opportunity to get chatty with The Tubes. But seriously, what am I going to say to a band? "Really love your stuff."? There really is no question that I could ask a member of Genesis that I haven't heard answered already. So, unless we were going to be working together on some project that had details to be hashed out, having lunch with them would just be awkward as all hell. 10. Well, The Lamb Tour, of course. But also probably any of the 80's tours which I skipped because I had progitice at the time, thinking it wasn't worth it if they weren't a serious Prog band anymore, which I realized later was an incredibly stupid thing to think. Consequently, I ended up seeing every major Prog band but Genesis. I did see Phil Collins on the Seriously Live Tour, but that's no consolation.

I think it all comes down to snobbery. Some people think that Phil represents everything that was 'wrong' with the 80s music: shiny synth-pop, drum machine music etc. People simply think they're intellectually superior and have better taste in music if they crap on Phil. It's way more cool to like or at least pretend to like The Smiths, Bob Dylan, Genesis etc than Phil. Majority of people who disregard the quality of his solo career, at least his quality as a pop musician (if nothing else), are mostly people who don't have good hearing enough to recognize or compose good music. All that irrational hate is simply for them to boost their own ego. And to be honest, I always preffered his solo career way more than Genesis whose music I find mostly to be immature while pretending to be more than it is. It's technically very skilled music by very skilled musicians. I don't care much for the Peter Gabriel era to be honest. There's always in their songs that predictable chord progression of many ugly chords that pretend to be unpredictable. I couldn't care less for such music. That still doesn't mean that I think that Genesis are bad. Far from that. They are innovative and an important part of music culture. They're just not for me (most of the time). I still like 'Duchess', 'Mama' and some other songs from Phil's period. I prefer Phil's atmospheric songs like 'Thru These Walls', 'In the Air Tonight', 'Don't Lose My Number', 'Droned/Hand in Hand', 'Long Long Way To Go' etc. Horn sections in his more uptempo songs are brilliant. I don't have anything against his ballads, especially 'One More Night', 'Against All Odds', 'Another Day in Paradise', 'I Wish It Would Rain Down' etc. I love those. I didn't like 'Both Sides', 'Testify', 'Going Back' and 'Brother Bear' albums very much. Everything else is great IMO. I also think that one of the main reasons why some people hate him so much is that they couldn't forgive his success and for being so trendy and successful at it during the, "oh so horrible", 80s era.

    1) Probably tied between Selling England and The lamb 2) Calling all Stations, though I still really like it (I adore FGTR it's a brilliant psych pop lp) 3) Peter Gabriel III (Melt) (probably the most influential, critically sound album of all of them) 4) Calling All Stations should have been done under a different band name like Rutherford/Banks. It would of been much more well received and perhaps they could of continued on without the pressure of the Genesis name. 5) Rutherford least favorite (love MIke as a Bassist & songwriter but the guy is not that great of a guitarist) 6) Least favorite would be Since I Lost You, or any of the sappy, sh*ty ballads Phil brought in on IT or WCD. 7) Again Calling All Stations should of been put out under a different name 8) Mad Man Moon or Undertow 9) Peter 10) Foxtrot tour (72/73) or The Lamb tour (74/75) I saw one show on the WCD tour and 3 shows on the Turn it on Again tour... I didn't see the last tour, I was too hard to see Phil in that condition.
