I always loved Man of our Times from the very 1st listen - can’t get enough it!
Really enjoyed this topic.
1. Calling All Stations
2. Man of our Times
3. Counting Out Time
4. Mad Man Moon
5. Silver Rainbow
6. Gonna Get Better
7. Can Untilities and Coast Liners
8. Burning Rope
9. Dusk
10. Seven Stones
Very good list!!
1. Lilywhite Lilith, 2. Blood on the Rooftops, 3. Man of Our Times, 4. Down and Out, 5. Just a Job to Do, 6. Living Forever, 7. There Must Be Some Other Way, 8. Time Table, 9. The Return of the Giant Hogweed, 10. Dusk
Agree with down and out. Love that song.
@@EverythingPhilCollins one of the first Phil Collins lyrics in Genesis. Down and Out.
"Living forever" A GREAT GREAT SONG . I know that something in this world consider this song
Fans usually heap praise on 2 and 9.
1. Heathaze, 2. Snowbound, 3. Undertow, 4. Inside and out, 5. Dodo (any live version), 6. Man of our times, 7. You might recall, 8. Open door, 9. Evidence of autumn, 10. Down and out
That's from Phil Collins era
Good choices!
I've always wondered why most Genesis fans seem to dislike the breezy shuffle songs, like "Way of the World", "Like It or Not" and "Misunderstanding". It's a nice change up to the driving 4/4 stuff. Also. you're right about "Anyway" harkening back to the very early days, since Tony's main piano riff there first appeared in 1969 on the Genesis Plays Jackson demos. I tried to rank the songs below, but it really just ended up kind of randomized. Great video!
Man of Our Times
Say It's Alright Joe
Anyway
Silver Rainbow
Uncertain Weather
Way of the World
In Limbo
Dusk
A Trick of the Tail
Glad we agree! Love your list!
Yeah, it's a bit strange. Fleetwood Mac had a huge shuffle hit with "Don't Stop" which is still popular and has been used in presidential elections
to stir up excitement, so why hasn't the same happened with Genesis? Well, I like "Way of the World" quite a bit, but it does sound like "safe" radio pop.
There's nothing special about it. It doesn't stand out. Not the way most Genesis songs do. "Like It or Not" is also not a bad song, but considering
the company it keeps on the Abacab album, it seems oddly out of place. It has a lazy feel to it. Phil belts it out and it still sounds narcoleptic!
And it doesn't help that it has no real chorus to speak of. It's just a drone.
"Misunderstanding" was a hit, though. And it's a great song. I've never heard a bad word about it.
1. White mountain,2. Dusk, 3. Seven stones, 4. Harlequin, 5. Can-utility and the coastliners, 6. The battle of Epping Forest, 7. Back in NYC, 8. The chamber of 32 doors, 9. Lilywhite Lilith, 10. The colony of slippermen.
That's from Peter Gabriel era.
As a history buff, "Eleventh Earl of Mar". There are not too many songs about a Scottish uprising that rock!
In chronological, not rank order, 'underrated':
Fountain of Salmacis (should be ranked higher on All-time prog masterpiece lists)
Firth of Fifth (obviously not underrated by Genesis fans, but in terms of 'greatest guitar solos lists' I really believe it should be ranked right up there with the 'best ever' - so in that regard I feel it qualifies as underrated)
Back in NYC (both the live Gabriel and live Phil versions are even better than the studio version, and the live cover version by District 97 - which is on UA-cam - is very, very cool! You must check it out!)
Chamber of 32 Doors (Surprised this song wasn't covered. I think it would hold up even today)
All in a Mouse's Night (should be ranked higher as an All-timeI prog masterpiece lists)
One for the Vine (also should be ranked higher on All-time prog masterpiece lists)
Snowbound (high up on my 'Most Beautiful Genesis Songs List)
Please Don't Ask (along with You Might Recall - one of my favorite Genesis non-prog songs ever)
Dodo/Lurker (yes, this song is prog!!!)
Like it or Not? (Like it? I freaking love it!!!)
sooo agree on "Anyway" and "Looking For Someone"! My other picks would be "Down and Out", "The Chamber Of 32 Doors", "Say It's Alright Joe" and "Get 'Em Out By Friday"
Fine songs. But "Get 'Em Out By Friday" probably won't count as it was played a lot live.
'Driving the Last Spike' from 'We Can't Dance'. One of my personal favorites.
Mad man moon
Blood on the rooftops
Say its allright joe
Driving the last spike
Man on the corner
Fly on the windshield
Silent sun
Not about us
Seven stones
.. silver rainbow xD
Awesome list
Ill pick one song from each album Starting from the 1st album:
In the beginning
White Mountain
Seven stones
Can Utility and Coastliners
After the ordeal
Fly on the windshield
Entangled
One for more he vine
Burning rope
Heathaze
Dodo/Lurker
Silver Rainbow
The Brazilian
Dreaming while you sleep
Shipwrecked
Fly on a windshield if that counts, and blood on the rooftops.
Good ones!!
In approximate chronological order:
1) The Conqueror
2) For Absent Friends
3) More Fool Me
4) The Battle of Epping Forest
5) After The Ordeal
6) Hairless Heart
7) Lilywhite Lilith
8) The Supernatural Anesthetist

This list could change … but as of this morning 😅
1. Like it or not
2. Dreaming while you sleep
3. Alien afternoon
4. Uncertain weather
5. Looking for someone
6. Snowbound
7. Please don’t ask
8. Silver rainbow
9. Fly on a windshield
10. You might recall
Very happy to see love for Way of the World, that’s one of my favorite tracks off of WCD.
Would Anything She Does be considered underrated? I don’t think it ever got played live, and there’s so many other massive hits on Invisible Touch that I feel like this one is never mentioned. It’s terrific!
If this Top 10 is about underrated songs by Genesis from the average Genesis fan POV....this is IMHO 10 Genesis songs almost always underrated by too many Genesis fans:
1. Heathaze
2. Down and out
3. Dodo (Live version)
4. Me and Sarah Jane (Three Sides Live version)
5. Just a job to do
6. White mountain
7. Can-utility and the coastliners
8. Driving the last spike
9. Man of our times
10. Snowbound
Special mentions:
11. Undertow
12. The colony of slippermen
13. Seven stones
14. Mad man moon
15. The whole "Calling All Stations" album (is a very good effort by the band)
I'd love to see your ranking of Genesis non album tracks and B Sides as a future video idea? Great List!
Got it! Top 10 Genesis B-Sides!
ua-cam.com/video/PWx6J7s2RUw/v-deo.html
They play a bit of Stagnation on Seconds Out, if you listen closely
Me & Sarah Jane (Three Sides Live version). Fantastic song
Chamber of 32 Doors, Seven Stones, Can Utility and the Coastliners, Man of our Times, Down and Out, Here comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist, Dusk, Mad Man Moon, Lilywhite Lilith, Blood on the Rooftops.
My Top Ten with your criteria:
10.) Calling All Stations
9.) Since I lost you
8.) One for the Vine
7.) Living Forever
6.) Way of the world
5.) Stagnation
4.) Like it or not
3.) Alone Tonight
2.) Dreaming While you Sleep
1.) Please don't ask
Without your Criteria
1.)Never a time (never played live, never included on a best of and got no video; no other Genesis-single since 1980 was treated like that)
2.) Man On The Corner
3.) Abacab
4.) Guide Vocal
“Way of the World” is an underrated song, however “Silver Rainbow” will always be the best underrated Genesis song!! 😁👍
Silver Rainbow is so great!
@@EverythingPhilCollins It’s in my top 10 Genesis songs for sure!! 😁👍
No particular order:
1) Me & Sarah Jane
2) Another Record
3) Silver rainbow
4) Dodo
5) Chamber of 32 Doors
6) Entangled
7) Snowbound
8) Cul-De-Sac
9) Living Forever
10) Blood On the Rooftops
I initially included 'You Might Recall' & Evidence of Autumn', but wasn't sure if that those counted as 'B' sides.
1. Me and sarah jane 2. Dodo/lurker 3. Dreaming while you sleep 4. Like it or not 5. Cul de sac 6. Anyway 7. Hairless heart 8. All in a mouses night 9. The dividing line 10. Its gonna get better would be my list prob.
My top five most underrated/unfairly bashed Genesis songs:
1. Say It's Alright Joe
2. A Trick of the Tail (the song)
3. Pigeons
4. Please Don't Ask
5. No Reply At All
10. The Battle Of Epping Forest
9. Man Of Our Times
8. After The Ordeal
7. Fly On A Windshield
6. More Fool Me
5. Blood On The Rooftops
4. The Lamia
3. Riding The Scree
2. Eleventh Earl Of Mar
1. Robbery, Assault And Battery
I agree with you on Anyway , and You Might Recall is one of my favourites , as is Alone Tonight .
I saw them on the Lamb tour in 1974 , and they played It , along with the rest of the album .
My list in no particular order :
Mad Man Moon
Time Table
Can Utility & the Coastliners
Anyway
Undertow
Heathaze
Blood on the Rooftops
In the Rapids
For Absent Friends. (. and Seven Stones )
Many Too Many. ( and Snowbound )
Thanks !!!!
Great topic, though you said no B sides and you used a few in your list (Way of the World, Silver Rainbow) Here’s my 10, but not in any particular order.
1 White Mountain
2 Like It Or Not
3 The Lamia
4 Can-Utility & the Coastliners (I think this is way too overshadowed by the other big tracks and gets forgotten more than it should)
5 After the Ordeal
6 Mad Man Moon
7 Say It’s Alright Joe
8 Heathaze
9 The Dividing Line
10 The Conqueror
Honorable mentions, including overlooking B side designations: Seven Stones, Man of Our Times, Silver Rainbow, Living Forever, Evidence of Autumn, Do the Neurotic, and Inside And Out.
Definitely agree about "It"! It's not quite in my top five (see below), but it's close. It's a great rocker (one of the few Genesis songs that uses a lead electric guitar riff in the conventional "rock" sense), and it gives The Lamb an exciting, triumphant conclusion. I never really cared for Silver Rainbow, Like It Or Not or Alone Tonight, but your other choices are good.
In no particular order:
1. All In A Mouse’s Night
2. In Hiding
3. Man Of Our Times
4. Heathaze
5. Whodunnit
6. Snowbound
7. Dreaming While You Sleep
8. Living Forever
9. White Mountain
10. Harlequin
I never knew "Anyway" was considered to be underrated. For me it is one of my favourite songs from The Lamb. I love the guitar solo!
I am completely with you in regards to "Way of the World", the song has such a nice flow, and the solo is really amazing. Such a good song!
Other songs I find underrated are:
"Down and Out"
"Burning Rope"
"Mad Man Moon"
"Cul-De-Sac"
"After the Ordeal"
It seems to me some people seem to like "Burning Rope" these days, which makes me happy, because back in the day (1996-1999) I used to frequent the newsgroup alt.music.genesis and it seemed to me that almost all Genesis fans back then were saying "Burning Rope" was such an awful song, but I've always loved it since first time I heard it.
Finally, I have to mention these three songs that I absolutely love, but they are so over-shadowed by the more popular songs from "Nursery Cryme" that everyone always talks about, not that the songs everyone talks about are bad, they are amazing, but "The Musical Box", "Return of the Giant Hogweed" and "The Fountain of Salmacis" always seems to overshadow these songs, that are absolutely amazing songs in their own right:
"Harold the Barrel"
"Seven Stones"
"Harlequin"
Thank you for a great video with a really interesting topic!
I agree that Way of the World is underrated. “Tell me Why” on the other hand isn’t as interesting to me.
I listen to “never a time” all the time, but I know many people don’t care for it.
I love all three of those tunes.
Totally agree with both The Brazilian and Like it or not. Excellent, catchy tunes. And I’ve always been a fan of Man of our Times. But I’d like to give a shout out to Burning Rope, Down and Out and Deep In The Motherland. They might be fan favorites, however they’re the songs that really hold together ‘ And then there were 3 ‘ as a fine album which never seems to receive it’s due credit.
Silver Rainbow was never played live. Parts were played at rehearsal.
I believe I recall Tony saying in a tour interview they wouldn't be doing Silver Rainbow live. He gave a reason, perhaps it was a technical reason - can't say for sure because the interview aired on radio in '83.
The Knife, Cuckoo Cocoon, Its Gonna Get Better, Domino parts 1&2, One For the Vine, Blood on the Rooftops, Dodo/Lurker, the Silent Sun, Snowbound, Lady Lies
Brazilian is part of an OST. Probably the best song on IT :) A lot of them are underrated. The one I remember immediately is Down and Out or Rooftops. Totally agree on Anyway. One of my favorites of the Lamb.
I think you picked a lot of great songs. As for Abacab, my only issue with it these days is the track order. I think "Man on the Corner" should have followed "No Reply at All" and the album should have closed with "Like it or Not."
Man of our Times seems like something that plays in a tween adventure drama when the hero overcomes the odds, not a diss, it works. I don't even like "The Lamb" as an album but I like "It"
Dusk is definitely a song they wrote in the FGTR days along with Visions of Angels, but I like it. It's very relaxing. All of Trespass is great, there's not a weak track on the album.
I'll pick two ATTWT songs to highlight. "Down and Out" and "The Lady Lies" are fantastic.
Totally agree with It. Always thought it was well ahead of its time (yep, I can see the unintended pun in that)
Man of our times, It, Blood on the rooftops, the lamia, living forever, Just a job to do, heathaze, another record, snowbound and mad Man moon.
Agree on all!!
Dusk, silver rainbow, its gonna get better, living forever, on the shoreline*, robbery assault and battery (particulalry keyboard solo and phil's vocal expressiveness), illegal alien, dodo/lurker, whodunnit, down and out, snowbound
* underrated and left off WCD ...by Tony?
I never agree with your opinions, but still love watching. 😊
In no particular order, and subject to change on a whim.
Looking for Someone (There's a Motown song in there, I'm sure of it!)
Man of Our Times (Will never get tired of this one.)
Cul-de-sac ( 12 year old me loved this, and old fart me loves it more.)
Down and Out
Mad Man Moon
Calling All Stations
The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging
Me and Sarah Jane
Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats (I could listen to it on a loop. I hope to make or see it used in a movie someday)
The Lady Lies.
It is a pity that Mike Rutherford disliked his song Man of our times. He wanted to create a kind of Gary Numan. And i love it. And he used the Arp Avatar on it. So you have a guitar and synth sound from the guitar.
Great tune.
I think Phil's drumming carries the song
Isn't Cul-de-sac considered underrated?
Good one!
@@EverythingPhilCollins By the way, i always thought of Man of our Times as an updated Back In NYC. But still a brilliant tune all the same.
all great tunes, I would add Fading lights somewhere, no kidding.
That’s fair!
I'm probably one of the few people who regards Who Dunnit as one of my favourites, because it's so quirky. 😅
Others of mine include of Uncertain Weather, Alien Afternoon, The Waiting Room, The Lady Lies, The Chamber Of 32 Doors, Since I Lost You and Just A Job To Do.
Admittedly, I also must mention The Day The Light Went Out and Evidence Of Autumn. Yes, they are b-sides, but hey, I still think they're underrated, full stop. 🙂
Great list!
My problem with 'Who Dunnit?' is that it made it's way onto two tours - which was at least one too many
@@aMan-or9ij Too quirky for you, eh? 😅😅😅
I dig Whodunnit as well. I can understand why some fans don't like it, but it's not Genesis's worst song by a longshot.
Phil and Mike both think Match Of The Day is their worst and Tony thinks it's After The Ordeal.
Silver Rainbow is very interesting. It starts in 6/8. Then 4/4. And the chorus used 3 bars of 4/4 instead of 4 bars of 4/4. And the harmony is tonal but interesting with curious changes.
Woah. Very cool.
White Mountain
Anyway
Mad Man Moon
WotGorilla?
Scenes From A Night’s Dream
Like It Or Not
Taking It All Too Hard
Never A Time
Great list. Almost put wotgorilla on mine too.
Ironic that you couldn't recall the title of You Might Recall. 😁
Hahahaha
Like it or Not and Another Record are my favorite ABACAB songs.
Good ones!!
I don’t think it was underrated. But as a long time Genesis fan. I’ll say any song on Duke. Something about that album captured the essence of Genesis. No other band or album in the world comes close.
You might recall wasn't the B-side of the Abacab single; that was Another record.
I think I was referring to a b side of the Abacab album. Great tune either way.
@@EverythingPhilCollins YMR was a track on the 3 track EP 3x3 in the UK. In other countries it was the flipside of Paperlate. It's also on the side 4 of the non-UK versions of Three Sides Live.
Absolutely agree with Anyway. That would probably be my top song or certainly top 3. Check the live version on Archive #1.
I'd go with (scans albums chronologically backwards):
1. Anyway
It's Not About Us
There Must Be Some Other Way
Another Record
Me and Sarah Jane
Heathaze
Please Don't Ask
Down and Out
The Colony of Slippermen
Time Table
Honourable mentions (another top 10):
Can Utility and the Coastliners
Harold the Barel
Seven Stones
Counting Out Time
Riding the Scree
Back in NYC
Lilywhite Lilith
Eleventh Earl of Mar
Wot Gorilla
Small Talk
And to think how many great tunes don't qualify 🤣
My favourite song is still Stagnation.
In order by release date:
White Mountain
Seven Stones
Get Em Out By Friday
Wot Gorilla?
Down And Out
Man Of Our Times
Me And Sarah Jane
Silver Rainbow
The Brazilian
There Must Be Some Other Way
It's not easy to do this with Genesis. If you look at all of their songs, I'd say 95% are either hit singles or fan favourites.
After that, there are a few songs that only people with a particular sense of humor will enjoy, such as "Who Dunnit?" and "Illegal Alien".
The only Genesis songs I'd call underrated are the very few Genesis songs that are not very good. They don't really have any bad songs,
so at their worst, you get something like "More Fool Me" or "Aisle of Plenty" which are not great, but also not terrible.
Harlequin, Anyway, Timetable,
Lady Lies, Am l Very Wrong,
Supernatural Anaesetist,
Not About Us, Hairless Heart,
After The Ordeal,
Wot Gorilla.
Ronnie SCOTLAND 😊
Anyway was written in the late 60s with a different words and the title “The Mad Scientist”.
way of the world reminds me of tears for fears for some reason
Interesting haha.
@@EverythingPhilCollins i think its the 12/8 (or 6/8?) beat .. ''welcome to your life.. theres no turning back..'' that one haha
As far as I know the only bootleg versions of Looking for someone are from the BBC.
Good to know!!
Cool list!
Like It or Not
The Brazilian
You Might Recall
There Must Be Some Other Way
Entangled
Way of the World
Snowbound
Lilywhite Lilith
Time Table
Cul de Sac
That was an excellent list - except that I think "It" is the worst song on "Lamb", but hey, can't agree on everything. 😆 I would definitely go with Chamber Of 32 Doors from Lamb instead.
It's Gonna Get Better aired on NY prior to any song off the self-titled 'Genesis' album, including Mama. Although I love the song, it's one of the very, very few Genesis songs that are better studio than live because they stretched it out too long live - needlessly IMHO.
Fireside Song
White Mountain
Please dont ask
Entangled
Time Table
After the Ordeal
Taking it all too hard
Snowbound
Seven Stones
Riding the Scree
i forgot entangled! the outro is incredible!
Taking it all too hard is so good
Heathaze
Undertow
Blood On The Rooftops
Not About Us
Can Utility And The Coastliners
As regarding 'It' I've always advocated The Lamb should have been a single album and sides 3 and 4 are way below the standards of 1 and 2 so this last track is an example of a band running out of steam, the track is so ordinary and uninspiring, for me anyway.....I really enjoyed the video, thanks
Burning rope ,,Me & virgil ,,no reply at all ,,it ,,anything she does ,,since i lost you,,heatheaze,,for absence friend,,alien afternoon,,if that what's you need (CAS).
You should do best of the b-sides next. Inside and Out, Feeding the Fire, Do the Neurotic, Me and Virgil, Evidence of Autumn, Vancouver Its Yourself, Id Rather Be You. Some of the Abacab songs and b-sides, are my least favorite. I hate Submarine, i hate Naminunu, and Another Record. I WOULD hate Who Dunnit, but it works great in the 3 Sides Live concert video
I'm 45 seconds into your video and I'm wondering; why you are wearing a baseball cap and why you are wearing it back-to-front. Do you really expect to be taken seriously?
