Of course I love all B-sides, especially those from 1976 until 1992. But my absolutely favorite of them is:
"Do The Neurotic"
It gives me pure eargasm with several highlights within its whole seven minutes. I love everything about that record.
The arrangement: The combination of both acoustic (probably Gretsch) and electronic (probably Simmons) drums, several keyboard, guitar parts and one bass parts... and all of it simultaneously.
The composition: Starting with its clear hook which develops into a neo-prog/power chord blend which only Genesis was capable of.
Whenever I listen to it I know there could be no other favorite band for me than Genesis!

It's almost my all time fav genesis song. As a drummer myself it's a drummers dream song to play.

I like it a bunch listen to it all the time. But I don't think it fits album . Song should have been used as a movie soundtrack song
My four favourite Genesis B-sides in no order are "Feeding the Fire", "You Might Recall", "The Day the Light Went Out" and "Vancouver".
I like them all just as much.
I honestly think "Feeding the Fire" would be the best song on the Invisible Touch album, had it been on there. It is such a powerful song.
"The Day the Light Went Out" has just a phenomenal groove and "Vancouver" is immensely beautiful.
I also agree with everything you said regarding "You Might Recall".
It is curious that it is said that Tony Banks was the boss at Genesis but many of his songs ended up being B-sides. That argument does not correspond to reality, Tony really, in addition to being a genius, is a very generous man.
I think Tony was “the boss” but could be out-voted.
The reason the UK got a fourth side live is because they decided to release the EP 3x3 over there instead which contained the Abacab outtakes Paperlate, You Might Recall and Me And Virgil. Subsequently they decided to round out the fourth side in other territories with the Duke B-Sides as well as the song 'Open Door' was only released as a B-Side to the 'Duchess' single which mainly only saw a UK release therefore allowing those people in those region to readily get their hands on the song for the first time.
Personally I would have liked to see the other two Abacab outtakes on there instead since an unmodified version of the first mix of Submarine is hard to come by. Sadly due to master damage they had to loop the ending and fade it out on the Archive II release. I know the 2008 remix exists but it would be nice to have the option to get a clear original version without having to dig for an old analog copy or vinyl rip that comes with it's own issues, not to mention the headache of trying to find these things.

Feeding the Fire might be my favorite B-Side, but it's at least in my Top 3. Super catchy, super energetic - I just love it! Would love to see it on Invisible Touch in an edited version and it'd be an excellent opener for sure. :D
"Twilight Alehouse" was released during the "Foxtrot" sessions but was kept in the vaults until early 1974 when it appeared as the B-side of "I Know What I Like".

Regarding CAS, have you heard 'Sign Your Life Away'? An amazing track in my opinion!
"Phret," "7/8," "Banjo Man," and "Anything Now" are outstanding as well. The CAS b sides were the silver lining to a venture that ultimately failed to catalyze a new era in the Genesis legend.
"Na-mi-nan-u".......addictive, ridiculously brilliant, classic sounding Genesis.........quite a bit like the 2nd half of "Inside and Out", a brilliant Hackett song he plays live to this day........."Twilight Alehouse", a "Foxtrot" outtake......."Whodunnit" and "We Can't Dance", utter crap songs......"No Son Of Mine" and "Jesus He Knows Me", the best 2 reasons to even have WCD.......also the best 2 videos they'd ever done

Disagree on "Hearts On Fire." I like the catchy syncopation and so I sense a lot of Tony in it. I find it pleasant.

Twilight Alehouse was written shortly after "From Genesis to Revelation" actually, and was performed lived from the Trespass days until Selling England By The Pound. That version was recorded during Foxtrot but left off the album. They specifically released it as a B-Side so they could stop playing it live.

You got me with Match of the Day 😂 I agree You Might Recall is amazing. I think my number one would be On the Shoreline though, or maybe Feeding the Fire. Shame those heavy songs were left off the albums.
Without a doubt: 1. Take off “Alone Tonight” for “Evidence Of Autumn”. 2. Take off “Wot Gorilla” for “Pigeons”. 3. Take off “Since I Lost You” for “Hearts On Fire”. 4. Take off “Way Of The World” for “On The Shoreline”. 5. Take out “Who Dunnit” for “You Might Recall”. These are the most obvious to me.
I’ve never understood the general dislike for Since I Lost You. I would take off Heathaze instead of Alone Tonight. Don’t like On the Shoreline at all. Just some non important feedback.👍

LOVE Evidence of Autumn.
One of the best B-sides is "Vancouver" which was the B-side of "Many Too Many". I didn't rate this song when I first heard it, but when the 1976-1982 box set came out and they remixed the tracks, "Vancouver" sounds amazing! A great little tune, reminiscent of "She's Leaving Home" and also gives the first glimpse into Phil as a songwriter (he co-wrote this with Mike). Deffo worth checking out. Really like the channel. You're doing a great job.

I've always thought all the post- Gabriel Genesis albums (besides the self titled album obviously) had at least one b-side that should have made the cut. I usually listen to my own custom tracklisting for the albums with my favored b-sides on there in place of an album track or two I like less. I'm so accustomed to these playlists that I was surprised to see Its Yourself pop up on your list here because I had legitimately forgotten it wasnt on A Trick Of The Tail lol great video Scott.
I love the Spot The Pigeons EP - it thrives beautifully on its own. Definitely none of these songs belong on Wind and Wuthering. I would have preferred they continued to release these EP style offerings i.e album outtakes rather than using them as B-sides.
Vancouver is my favorite B side. LOVE it!
I would have definitely included both Evidence of Autumn and Open Door on Duke. In fact, years ago I burned myself an alternate copy of that album with the above two songs in place of Heathaze and Alone Tonight, respectively, and I hardly ever listen to the original anymore. The album flows together great that way -- the final chord of EOA has kind of a "cliffhanging" feel that makes a great way to close off the first half, and the ending to Open Door segues almost perfectly into the Cul-De-Dac intro.
If you’re looking for a shorter version of Do The Neurotic, it appears on the b-side of Throwing It All Away, which was the first place I heard it. About 2 minutes shorter and a much tighter edit which I actually like better than the longer version. Check it out.
You Might Recall isn't only my favorite Genesis b-side but my favorite Genesis track ever which has in my humble opinion Phil's greatest ever vocal & the groove in his drumming is just stunning & why oh why this was left off Abacab i will never know!! The 2007 Remastered version really brings out all the best elements on the track as well..... A very good list by the way but i would have included I'd Rather Be You which should have been on Invisible Touch.

Very nice video Scott! Some of these B-sides are absolutely amazing, and yes - I would have swapped most of them with some songs that did make the albums. Completely agree on Since I lost you. I get the sentimental value to Phil, but I've never liked the song and it's actually a skipper for me.

The only Genesis B-sides I REALLY like are "You Might Recall", "Feeding the Fire" and "Paperlate". Although, "Paperlate" was actually an A-side.
They're all fantastic songs. And in the case of "Feeding the Fire", it might just be the screamiest of all Phil Collins' "screaming years" songs.
Even more so than "Mama" and "I Don't Care Anymore". It's the closest Genesis ever came to metal.
The calling all station b-sides were probably the best stuff they wrote with Ray. Anything Now, Sign Your Life away are killer songs that should of been on the album
In terms of Invisible Touch you couldn’t squeeze anything more onto it. In those days to get the bigger bass sound you had to use deeper groves in the record which meant you got only 20 minutes per side. That’s why Yes’s Drama is so short of an album. Tinny-ier songs were usually left as the last song for the side as you had to keep the grooves on the record thinner to prevent skipping of the needle.

Great topic! I agree with you on "Paperlate." I always found it to be a much weaker (and more repetitive) version of "No Reply At All." Here are my top 5 in no particular order...

In the UK 'Ripples' was the B-side to 'A Trick Of The Tail' released on March 12th 1976. That has to be the best B-side of any song by anybody, ever.
I presume this list is for B-sides released in the US.
The B sides are easy to track down...not the case circa 1993...youtube alone has them all there...and due to resurging interest in Genesis over the last 15 years easy to buy
You Might Recall is from the 3X3 EP in the UK with Paperlate on the A-Side and You Might Recall and Me And Virgil is the B-Side.
Until the final (blasphemous) comment, I thought that’s why Paperlate wasn’t on the list: it was an A-side. In terms of 3 v 4 side live, I believe the non-European releases (I’m an Aussie) included the studio tracks because the 3x3 EP (which was 3 of the 5 tracks) was only released in Europe. BTW, I don’t share the band's hate for Me & Virgil: has one of Mike's finest guitar solos, and feels like part of the "Roof is Leaking" / Deep in the Motherload story cycle.
It's funny you should say you think less of these tracks because Genesis didn't put them on an album. When I'm listening to Abacab on Spotify, I certainly use a playlist where I've replaced Who Dunnit? with You Might Recall 😅😅 But it seems we agree on that one. Such a brilliant song, great intro, awesone percussion. I could have seen that even getting radio airplay.
Hello, a very interesting presentation, rare to find here on youtube. I'm a long-time b-sides collector. A lot of good stuff that didn't make it on the album. About Genesis i alway think of "Just The Bones" from Steve Hackett; what a great b-side only available on the 12'' of "A Girl Thats Made In Japan". I really like the Genesis b-sides "On The Shoreline" and "Feeding The Fire". "On The Shoreline" is in my opinion better than a few songs from the "We Can't Dance" Album. I also would take "Feeding The Fire" instead of "Anything She Does" on "Invisible Touch", it had been the better choice i think. Greetings from germany, bye and take care.
Funny but I think Paperlate is album worthy and is #1 on my list. Open Door is great. Can’t stand On the Shoreline. Fun list though.
While you might not be a fan of Submarine I love it I think that it’s just a brilliant Tony Banks instrumental and it really gives me the deep sea vibe to it don’t know why but it makes me feel like I’m on the Nautilus with captain Nemo . I also really like the b-side the day the light went out bloody fantastic synth from Banks and blisteringly intense vocals from Collins’s. Another one of my favourites is open door love Ruthafords guitar work but I understand why it wasn’t put on Duke and honestly I couldn’t replace any song in Duke for another it’s just a perfect album to me and as good as evidence of autumn is I can’t replace it with anything

My "personal " Abacab: Abacab, Dodo, Me and Sarah jane , Submarine, You Might recall, me and Virgil, naminanu , Like it or not, Man on the corner, keep it dark.
I never considered songs released on EP to be b-sides, Spot the Pigeon and 3x3 are like mini-albums. But including those as b-sides, "You Might Recall" would definitely be top 5 along with "Feeding The Fire", "On The Shoreline", and "Do The Neurotic". I think "Hearts on Fire" and "I'd Rather Be You" aren't as bad as you think, especially when the worst Genesis song of all time is "Since I Lost You" and "Papa He Said"..and "Banjo Man"... What do you think of "Nowhere Else To Turn"? I like that one from CAS.
It´s such a shame that "It`s youself not be included in "A trick..." with "Los Endos " as an only song.

The Three Sides Live thing is a strange one. In the UK we've always accepted it as a full live album and the only rationale that I know of it still being called 'three sides' was that there were three of them in the band! (I know, doesn't make sense right!). I have literally only just tracked myself down a German copy with the b-sides on it, and although I already had all the tracks, I love the sudden change up from live to studio.
On The Shoreline is the best b-side in my opinion. I would have it as the opener and take off Tell Me Why. I like Tell Me Why as it's too much on the vibe of ...But Seriously and sounds too much solo Phil rather than a band effort I like Since I Lost You and for me fits as a 'towards the end of the album' track.

I have always enjoyed the b-side I'd Rather Be You, but maybe it ought to have had a thicker production like a Jeff Lynne treatment.
I have always enjoyed Match Of The Day as well. I wonder how it would have sounded if it had been an ELO song. It does remind me more of ELO than Genesis.
Evidence Of Autumn and You Might Recall sounds like excellent album tunes to me. Way too good to be put on a b-side. And compared to some of the tracks that got on Duke and Abacab it seems pretty absurd.
I like Open Door very much too. A great album closer. And of course the last track on the fourth side of the Three Sides Live. I don't like that there has to be two different versions of that album. It seem so odd to have four live sides when it's called Three Sides Live.
Me & Virgil is an interesting one too. Maybe different lyrics and production would have made a masterpiece of it. It sounds very progressive. How different it would have sounded if done 5 years earlier.
The lyrics does take away a lot from Inside And Out. Spot The Pigeon is like 3 songs from 3 missing albums. I think Inside And Out would better fit a Steve Hackett solo album. Both Phil and Mike were on his first solo album so why not.
Twilight Alehouse is great. I first heard it as a live version on a bootleg in early 90's. It is also at the intro to The Serpent from 1969. It should perhaps have been on a missing album before Nursery Cryme together with Let Us Now Make Love and Pacidy and Shepherd and those tracks. Anyway and Lilywhite Lilith were also originally from that era.
I bought the CD single with On The Shoreline on B-side when it was released. For me it is more memorable than those that came on the album. Not necessarily better but I feel more familiar with that song than any of those on We Can't Dance.
Vancouver and The Day The Light Went Out are also great but very different from each other. But different songs can be put together too. Like Supper's Ready. The Day The Light Went Out reminds me a bit of Willow Farm.
Who Dunnit is the obvious b-side but of course we live in a backwards world.
On The Shoreline is freakin' awesome. Buuuut.... No Son Of Mine was the perfect opener. It could have easily replaced Since I Lost You. I fell like you would have to trim it down by cutting or editing out the "Elephant" noise. It might sound a bit generic if it is on the same album as NSOM with both using the same sound. And I'm set on NSOM being on the album and being the opening track. The metronome just sets the atmosphere perfectly for the journey you are about to take. Maybe even add OTS as a "bonus track", like all the after credit scenes they put in movies now.

Lots of folk think it's a metronome at the start of No Son but it's actually Phil hitting the rim of the snare.
@@stefanlivesey8068 Somewhere I'm thinking, maybe in one of the many interviews, the guys were saying they started with a metronome & the elephant noise. One of them was saying they kept the sound because it felt like a clock ticking on a timebomb and helped build the tension. Maybe it was just in the demo stage? I know they often start with the drum machine loop and Phil adds his drums/percission later on in the recording process. Might be where some of us get that from. Cool to know what the final effect is, thank you.
Feeding the fire in the place of "Anything she does" ( an awful song) and Invisible Touch would have been perfect.
I wouldn't have "worked [Inside and Out] into *And Then There Were Three*" without leaving Steve's guitar solo ending in tact.
Totally disagree with you on “Hearts on Fire”…that song spoke to me when I was going through a relationship breakup during the 90’s and got me through it. The catchy rhythm of the song was so positive to me and was a great substitute to a lot of dour songs on the subject. Absolutely love some of their B sides, and most of them should have replaced certain songs on certain albums. One example, “Feeding The Fire” should have replaced “The Brazilian” on Invisible Touch, or maybe even choosing “Do The Neurotic”. Another example is “You Might Recall” should have definitely replaced “Who Dunnit” on Abacab, as that was the worst Genesis song ever in my opinion. I didn’t include “Paperlate” because it did get radio airplay, and it was more of an A side.
I would place "Feeding the Fire" higher on my list than "On the Shoreline"

I think "Inside and Out" could fit on Wind and Wuthering... mostly because I think the album version of "Your Own Special Way" is awful. The single release that cuts it down to about 3:50 lets the important parts of the song really have their full power. So if you stick the cut down "Your Own Special Way" after "All in a Mouses Night" and remove the final :45 seconds of "Inside and Out", it all fits on Wind and Wuthering.
"Pigeons" would have belonged on A Trick of The Tail.
Have to strongly disagree with the Hearts on Fire opinion you have. It would be my number 1 for their B-Sides.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

@@MrProy33 What makes me giggle about the scene every time I see it is that I got into Genesis mainly through Duke. Before that, whenever I had tried to listen to the Gabriel years or even the early Phil Collins years, I didn't really get it either. Shapes and Invisible Touch? Sure, I got those. They're pop, but they're good pop. But A Trick Of The Tail, or even And Then There Were Three felt inaccessible to me, impenetrable even. Doubly so for the Gabriel eras.
So when I saw that scene and he said he didn't understand Genesis before Duke it almost felt like a personal attack hahaha 🤣🤣
Now I love all eras of Genesis. Although I'll admit From Genesis To Revelation gets very, very little playtime from me.
