My high school show choir added a string section to our band specifically to perform the New Blood version of In Your Eyes… And then our choreographer said it didn’t fit the show and it got cut. 😭 But we couldn’t just kick the string section out, so those students stayed in the group until they graduated, so In Your Eyes altered the sound of our group for the next couple years!
We never brought In Your Eyes into a competition, but we did bring it back at the end of that year for our big end of the year showcase, so at least it didn’t go unplayed!
Peter Gabriel was innovative with technology in his production of So.
The title So comes from the 5th note in the C Major scale.
I ❤ the So album. I like Tracks 1-7 equally. Mercy Street, Red Rain, That Voice Again are favorites. I like Big Time. Its about greed and materialism in the 80s. So was nominated for best album of the year at The Grammys. It lost to Graceland by Paul Simon.
So is one of my favorite albums in the 80s.
Love these details thank you! Sad to lose to Graceland but I get it.
I'm more of a PG3 (Melt cover) fan but I also enjoy this album as it is my first gateway into Peter. Enjoyed a lot of the songs especially Sledgehammer - who doesn't love that song? Don't Give Up is a beautiful song. Red Rain and Mercy Street are both moody in a great way and In Your Eyes is phenomenal.
Interestingly I'm not a fan of Red Rain as recorded on So. I like the live version on the Secret World Live album - that version is way more groovier.
Fun Fact about Sledgehammer: Billy Joel based his song “Storm Front” on Sledgehammer because he enjoyed the beat.
Interesting!!
Where would I put “That Voice again”? For me it’s a standout track definitely one of my favourites because I’m an obsessed fan of non-hit-singles if that makes sense. If you never heard “Back to Front” that is the tour where he played “SO” live for the 30th anniversary or something like that.
I wonder in hind sight if Big Time should have been just a B side fan favourite and left off the album, replaced by “This is the Picture” (in the case of the vinyl release).
Thanks for your interesting review of So.
Great idea!
"Mercy Street" is indeed a beautiful song. The background is quite sad, just read up about the late poet Anne Sexton. Also, I believe that it has some distant similarities to "In the Air Tonight."
Interesting. Will check that out!
@@EverythingPhilCollins I also really like Gabriel's songs "Intruder" and "No Self Control." A certain drummer really makes those songs even more special.
I hear new age elements. The album art is alerting very early 1990s. So he was slightly ahead of time like the Crying Game or Streets of Philadelphia type sound, The Roland D-50. Check out Soul In The Machine compilation on Windham Hill. Sledge Hammer reminds me of Huey Lewis and The News and Power Station - Some Like It Hot. I guess my thing with Peter Gabriel is is faux voice but he has dedicated fans. I had a teacher in Middle School who showed early computer animation with the song Sledgehammer.
GREAT thoughts!!
I agree, the first 4 albums are different than the latter albums. I am a fan of the albums So, Us, Up and I/O. Not so much a fan of the first 4 albums.
Nice video ❤
“That voice again” and its placement for me felt similar to “I don’t wanna know” from NJR. Both could have been hits but were probably similar to previous singles.
Great point!! Agree
Series 1: PG the Artist. Series 2: Shit I got to start making money.
Haha. True.
Hey Scott, we’re a patient bunch. Come back on your time “we’ll be waiting” (from Find a way to my heart lyric). Peter Gabriel is definitely a really different beast. “So” definitely was the start of the Peter machine. Out with the old in with the new. Security is definitely my least favorite of the early albums. I do have to say that I enjoy the non-commercial hits more then overplayed singles. They seem to have better staying power for me. The less production on a song the better for me. Not sound wise if it sound like garbage it’s not good. With that said: my SO ranking the songs: 01. That Voice again
02. This is the Picture excellent birds
03. Red Rain
04. Don’t give up
05. Mercy Street
06. In your eyes
07. We do what we’re told
08. Sledgehammer
09. Big Time
Note: all songs on this album are amazing. The ranking does not view my liking of the songs. Songs have to be lower then others. The more played songs for me are not that special. That’s why they rank where they rank if that makes any sense. Any comments I welcome them. But don’t disrespect my views I never do on any comment. Thank you.
Thanks brother!! Appreciate your support! Love your number 1!!
@@EverythingPhilCollins anytime Scott!
Sorry bro, not ever will like Peter Gabriel, just cannot dig it,either you like him or you don't,the only track is very worthy of listening is,
i don't remember, anything else I cannot dig at all,a professional Phil collins I am definitely like you offcourse.
Haha fair!!
For Me, Gabriel's solo Albums, are The weakest in The Genesis canon.
Shaking The Tree 16 Golden Greats was a career retrospective. Gabriel included both hit singles and album cuts that he liked. Interestingly, In Your Eyes was not included because it had already gotten so much attention when it was released on the Say Anything soundtrack the year before.
