I can never understand why anyone skips tracks on an album. I feel as though it's not my place to do so, no matter how much I dislike the track.

@@charlesrwilliamsI suppose I'm an 'all or nothing' person. To my mind if I can't stomach a whole album from start to finish, then I'd question why I possessed the album in the first place. I wouldn't keep a book where I could only read 8 chapters out of 9. The artist has taken time to decide what songs go on an album and what the running order should be. It's not for me to question the artistic integrity of professional musicians who are skilled at their trade while I'm a mere listener.

    1. Duke, Trick, Wind, Abacab (in that order)
    2. Foxtrot/Nursery (tie). I listen to FGTR and CAS more than these two
    3. Hmmm...I find most of them spotty at best. I love Face Value for the opposite reason you state. I find it raw, rough, and immediate. SO is super-slick and highly polished. If you want a quick 1-2-3 bang of Genesis solo material, check out the Against All Odds soundtrack. Not only does it have Phil's mega-monster certifiable #1 smash hit song, but there are two excellent solo tracks from Mike and Peter as well. Dark Horse: "The Wicked Lady" soundtrack by Tony
    4. Tony may be the Genesis "engine" but Steve was its soul. Firth of Fifth, Blood on the Rooftops, Giant Hogweed, etc., wouldn't be the same without Steve. Re: Supper's Ready. Would you say a delicious Bolognese is "just a bunch of carrots, celery, and meat all pieced together"?? Supper's Ready is epic precisely BECAUSE "it's a bunch of songs pieced together." btw - that's what a symphony is, too.
    5. I was gonna say Mick Barnard, but since you forced my hand, I'd have to rank Peter last. I don't l know the man, but he seems like a pretentious, temperamental "artiste" (Morrissey, Michael Stipe, Bono, et. al.). Tell me I'm wrong.
    6. No contest: WHODUNNIT. I'll fight anyone who disagrees. DISHONORABLE MENTION: I Can't Dance. I have said this a million times: Genesis are not funny. I don't know if it's their upperclass status, but they just aren't funny. They *think* they're funny. But they're not. Ugh.
    7. We Can't Dance. God-awful horrible pap. WCD is the sound of a band trying to be a cover version of themselves. Tony's solos are aimless and formless. Blecch.
    8. Blood on the Rooftops. The best Genesis song ever written. Atmospheric, melodic, rousing chorus and changes. Sublime. The pinnacle of Genesis songwriting.
    9. My heart says Tony. He's so enigmatic and intelligent, but he seems like he has a million walls and conversing with him would be like pulling teeth. Phil is the bloke, but super-famous people like that always have 50% of their attention on their agenda and business plan. I don't feel like he would be fully present. Mike or Steve would be my 2 choices. After reading Steve's book, he seems a bit angry, so I don't know how much he would enjoy talking about Genesis. Mike gets the invitation.
    10. May 7, 1980 London Lyceum Theater

    1. When I was younger it was definitely And The There were Three, my Dad made a tape copy of it in the 80s and I played it to death. Nowadays it's probably The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, I finally understand that album, as I didn't get it when I was younger.
    2. Least is FGTR without a doubt, I listened to it lots when I first bought it on vinyl, but after then I have not listened to it in about 10 years or so. Not a bad album, just a bit different to anything else.
    3. Favourite by far is Face Value, very diverse and magical album.
    4. The Live Version of Supper's Ready on Seconds Out is 10 times better than the studio version, Phil's vocals pack a punch, in comparison with some of Peter's vocal deliveries at the time.
    5. Tony Banks, He is a genius and probably a really nice guy, I just think he can be a bit grumpy.
    6. Least favourite track is Taking It All Too Hard, I don't think it's a bad song but I've heard it to the point at which it doesn't interest me in anyway anymore.
    7. I feel like Calling All Stations should have done much much better commercially then it did, it still follows on from the catchy pop theme of We Can't Dance and has 80s prog moments. FGTR just doesn't fit in with the rest of the discography.
    8. Mad Man Moon, the piano playing is mind-blowing, should have been done as part of the Trick or Wind Tours. I would have chosen Do The Neurotic, but There is footage someone on You tube of it being played Live, So It doesn't count.
    9. Phil Collins by far, love the man, and he is the inspiration for me as a musician.
    10. 1982 Encore Tour, I feel it gets forgotten, it also has performances of Me and Virgil, Paperlate, Like it Or Not, and apparently some other tracks from shows we don't have yet.

    • @kbrewski1

    1. Probably Duke. With Foxtrot, Wind & Wuthering, Selling England and We Can't Dance as runners up.
    2. Calling All Stations or ...And Then There Were Three
    3. Face Value, Private Parts & Pieces, So, Passion, A Curious Feeling
    4. Most controversial opinion: the best 'prog' Genesis came from the same source as the best 'pop' Genesis, and thus they are indistinguishable. Underlying that: there is not a 'prog' vs 'pop' dichotomy, but a 'group jam writing' and 'individual or paired writing' dichotomy in the oeuvre. Hear me out. When Genesis came together, most songs were written by individuals or pairs, or stitched together from pieces written by individuals or pairs. Then, when Phil joined, him, Tony and Mike discovered that they had some kind of magic together. Very specifically: Apocalypse in 9/8, constructed from a jam between the three of them. From that point onwards, there would always be these elaborate pieces on albums coming from the jamming of the three, sometimes joined by Steve. The Cinema Show, Los Endos, In That Quiet Earth, Dance On A Volcano. Then, on And Then There Were Three that well seemed dried up, as that album is full of individual or paired writing. Except for Follow You Follow Me, which Genesis always mentions as the only truly group written song on the album. They also always say that FYF M for a long time seemed to be going to be a long prog song, but suddenly it turned into this neat pop song. I think that's the moment where they learned that what makes them so special in the prog department could also give them shorter songs, when they first learned how to do that. And so from then onwards, the emphasis came to be on group jam writing. That is also the moment when the hits start coming. So: why did Genesis become this hit machine? Not because they abandoned the well that gave them prog. Far from it. It's because they turned to that well more fully, and ultimately completely. So, my most controversial opinion: in Genesis, prog = pop = prog.
My other one: Whodunnit is great.
Another one: We Can't Dance is not 'the next pomp pop album after Invisible Touch', but a return to form with more natural instrumentation, story songs (but more in a 90s way), and quieter arrangements that suit a theater more than a stadium.
BTW: You are wrong on Supper's Ready. Not that it's an epic. It's more like a church service. It's not a story, it's a prayer. Give yourself over to that part, to the risk of seeing the evil within yourself, then turn the lights off and go through it. You need to be open to the religious salvation.
    5. Steve, based on the way he continuously needs to trash talk the band in order to keep up his persona and his brand, and the revisionist history he is practicing with that. Yet, I saw him in concert yesterday, and was completely enamored with him. Based on his solo stuff: Mike. Early Mechanics stuff is kinda good, also a little boring too, but once the two Pauls were gone there is just nothing of note to be found there. So safe, middle of the road. Based on his biography: Phil. I just found him to be such an asshole sometimes. Musically, I think he's brilliant, yet I also think he never developed himself fully in an artistic way, because of heavy working class hero-syndrome.
I like 'em all of course!
    6. Illegal Alien because of the racism.
    7. None. FGTR is actually a great album. CAS is good as an attempt, even when it kinda failed. I would say that they needed to work a little longer on Shapes. Because what would have been b-sides normally, all ended up on the album. That could have been one of their best.
    8. I would have loved to have seen the Genesis between FGTR and Tresspass. The Shepherd/Pacidy/Let Us Now Make Love-era. Other than that: Supper's Ready.
    9. Tony Banks all the way.
I'm sorry to shatter your image of Mike Rutherford as a songwriter: he wrote the lyrics of FYFM, the song came from a jam. The Living Years was written I think more by B.A. Robertson than Mike. I'd say that Mike is not so much a great songwriter, but one of the best co-writers. He can bring out the best in others, by doing seemingly very simple things.
    10. I'd go to the end of the Selling England Tour, early 1974. Or the Duke or Abacab tours.

  • @RallyingSightsSounds

    1. Duke, at the moment. Selling England overall.
    2. Calling All Stations
    3. Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte
    4. And Then There Were Three... Is a really immersive, atmospheric album , perfect to listen to in full on a late evening drive.
    5. (More frustration than least favourite, but) Mike Rutherford, produced so much great music in the 'prog' era, yet seems so dismissive of much of it.
    6. I Can't Dance.
    7. Calling All Stations
    8. Dodo/Lurker/Submarine/Naminanu as a live suite, like the Duke suite.
    9. Not the obvious Peter/Phil like you, Mike Rutherford, because I want to figure him out!
    10. Having seen The Musical Box do the excellent Selling England tour, and having seen the Duke tour video, both of which I'd love to have seen live originally, I'd alternatively have to choose the Lamb tour, as I think it would be something special to experience with Peter in it's original form, re-enactments or the footage we have probably don't do it justice.

Least Played: Invisible Touch (worth noting I haven't listened to the whole discography yet but this is the one I didn't really enjoy)

So glad to be commenting on something non-political for once. ☺️
I’m new to your channel. Thanks for the questions and your thoughts.
Favorite solo album: Bankstatement. It’s where all of Tony’s quirks and awkwardness and power and beauty and chords came together in pop songs that I still listen to often.
Controversial opinion 1: I freaking loved Peter Gabriel’s artistry in Genesis and it inspired me to try my hand in creative endeavors. Saw his early tours and listened to his solo albums. But I reached a point where I just couldn’t click with his solo music anymore. In hindsight, the draw for me in Genesis was always Banks and Hackett.
Controversial opinion 2: There’s no such thing as too many chords or too much keyboards. 😉
I’d want to have lunch with Banks and Hackett but I’d be too intimidated to speak!
If I could relive one concert, it would be the first one I saw, which was Foxtrot. Genesis was so different from the other artists I was listening to at the time. I didn’t know what hit me that night and there was no going back. They showed me so many possibilities. Now that I’m old, I’d love to experience the energy of that era just one more time.

    My most controversial Genesis opinion:
I feel quite lukewarm about some of the songs that many Genesis fans seems to love:
I know What I Like, The Cinema Show, Dance on a Volcano, Los Endos, Afterglow, Duchess, for example.
    Another controversial Genesis opinion:
We Can't Dance is a really great album. Songs like Way of the World, Living Forever, Driving the Last Spike and Fading Lights are phenomenal!
Least favourite member of Genesis? This is difficult.
Out of the core 5 members between 1971 and 1974, I can't single out any of them as being less important than any others.
My favourite two Genesis albums are Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot, and I feel each member are equally important in every moment of these two albums.
I'm going to have to put Ray Wilson as my least favourite Genesis member.
    Least favourite Genesis song:
Who Dunnit is just so extremely bad. Illegal Alien is second worst, but Who Dunnit is beyond terrible.
I would remove From Genesis to Revelation from Genesis history.
What Genesis song would I love to hear live?
Seven Stones or Down and Out
Which Genesis member would I want to have lunch with?
    Definitely Steve
What tour would I have wished to witness live?
The first tour after Phil and Steve joined, and Nursery Cryme had been released.

1 Listened to most? I have to admit that lately I listen to the solo albums more often than Genesis LPs or CDs. *Duke* was the last one I listened to in its entirety.
2 Listened to least might be *We Can't Dance* because some of the songs you mentioned I don't even remember. I've had that CD for many years so I've had plenty of time to listen to it & love 3 songs from that one: "Last Spike" "Dreaming While You Sleep" & "No Son." I rarely want to hear the others ("Man On the Corner" is pretty good). As for *Genesis to Revelation,* that was the 1st one I heard so I have a soft spot for it. ("In the Wilderness" is a great track.)
3 Solo album: *Spectral Mornings.* That's a record that truly takes the listener on a journey.
4 *Calling All Stations* should've been followed by more from the new lineup! Seeing them perform live to a young audience on Polish TV was stirring & Ray was a good frontman.
5 All members are essential & all make big contributions. (Would you eliminate a Beatle or one of The Who?) If Steve had been there in the CD age, he likely would've got more material on the albums.
6 "Whodunnit" & "Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging" are interesting, though often disparaged. I find lots of later songs uninteresting & I never play them: "Invisible Touch," "Hold On My Heart," "All in a Mouse's Night" (great music, dumb lyrics) & "Alien Afternoon."
7 If I could erase anything from Genesis' history it would be the beer commercial from the '80's that was tied to "Tonight, Tonight." Prostitution of art!
8 Well, I was fortunate to hear "Supper's Ready" live once! There's video of the *Calling All Stations* tour on youtube which was great fun to see. So maybe "The Knife" or "Return of the Giant Hogweed."
9 Steve for sure. He's written some of the strongest songs and I appreciate his sense of humor & outlook on life.
10 I would see the reunion concert with Tony, Mike, Pete, Steve & Phil that was a benefit for Real World Studio (it may have been in the late '80's or early'90's). My 1st live concert was *Trick of the Tail* & it was great fun. It was at a medium sized outdoor venue & both Phil & Steve hosted & traded jokes.

Hello from the UK. Lovely show as always. A little controversy: the casually dismissed Live Over Europe is the best live release as a core trio. Phil’s last dance before the years took their toll and he sings and plays amazingly. I think it will grow in stature among the Genesis faithful

    • @kbrewski1
      @kbrewski1 14 днів тому

I think because the entire concert is on DVD (GENESIS, RELEASE WHEN IN ROME ON HD BLU RAY!), the cd version will never have the same stature. For instance, Seconds Out is iconic in capturing the 4 man era Genesis, but if a 1977 pristine live show were to be released on Blu Ray, Seconds Out would be overshadowed a bit.

I'm not going to hold my breath on getting more Blu Ray or HD Blu Ray of the live concerts. They went cheap releasing the Shepperton 1973 concert and the 1976 Genesis In Concert video w Bruford on it when they released the 3 colored Archive boxes. The 76 one I believe is a direct transfer from the Japanese laserdisc (which I have), so they didn't do any restoration or source upgrades on those. They didn't release the entire Duke Tour Lyceum concert from 1980, only the 45 minutes which aired on various TV outlets on the Duke dvd. They actually did release the Abacab Tour 3 Sides Live concert video on Blu Ray, which gave me some fleeting hope for more, but the Blu Ray wasn't a huge upgrade over DVD and again, no additional footage. No Mama Tour Blu Ray. No INVISIBLE TOUCH Tour Blu Ray, even though that Wembley concert was the first concert shot on Hi Def video! Even the 1992 WCD Tour concert has still not been released on Blu Ray.
Very frustrating they don't understand the historic or archival value of these live tours to at least put them on the best possible formats.
I went to 4 of the 2007 Reunion Tour shows, and even though the setlist never varied (I went to all 3 Chicago shows clinging to the hope they might change a few songs night to night) I was pleasantly surprised how good the setlist was considering how much they wanted to squeeze in. There was more Progressive and longer instrumental heavy songs than I thought there would be, and they surprisingly left out many "hits" I assumed they would play with Phil back. Stuff like Man on the Corner, Paperlate, Abacab, In Too Deep, Illegal Alien (thank god) and a few others. I didn't go to the Last Domino Tour due to Phil's issues and my own mobility issues, so I am happy to remember them at full strength in 2007 and at the 6 concerts I saw from Duke to IT.

    1. Selling England
    2. FGTR
    3. The Fugitive. (Which could be an answer to 4) (^_^)
    4. I think a second album with Ray would have turned out great. Where Mike and Tony wrote specifically for Ray's voice and they were more used to writing as a duo or as a trio with Ray. With the exception of Trick of the Tail, second albums after a lineup change are always tons better than the previous. I'm not an apologist or CAS. I think it's fair to middling, but I feel the same about ATTWT, and I thought Duke hit it out of the park. I just think Mike and Tony would have figured out their weaknesses with CAS and written much better for the next one that never happened. I think Mike hanging it up at that point is one of the parts that leads me to my selection of question 5.
Another 4, Keep it Dark is one of my all-time favorite Genesis songs.
    5. Hate to pick any of the five (six), but if I have to, Mike.
    6. Whodunnit, of course. Always skip it.
    7. FGTR. I just don't listen to it. I don't really wish it could be removed. I can quite easily ignore it, and that's enough for me.
    8. All of them. Never got to go to a live show. Sniff. (I beat myself up for not knowing about them when they played my home town growing up.)
    9. Tony. I love how he talks about things in interviews, and I think talking with him would be a lot of fun.

1- Selling By The Pound; Foxtrot, Wind and Wuthering but I listen to all of them. Maybe a lot less in the case of From Genesis to Revelation. 2 - Abacab and From Genesis to Revelation. 3 - Smallcreep's Day and the Geese and the Ghost, . 4 - I couldn'y say but perhaps saying Supper's Ready is just a collage of poorly written pieces. 5 - I'd say Phil if I had to choose... because he lead the group into a more Poppish Style... and Steve for the way he left and the hole he created in terms of the Guitar deepness he had. 6- Clearly Who Dunn't. 7 - First and last... From Genesis to Revelation or Calling All Stations. 8 - I've had the chance of seeing then live since 1973 and many many times in different countries... but I'd say Heathaze. 9 - I also had the chance to have dinner with them all (Daryl and Chester included) in Lisbon, 1992. I had a nice conversation with Mike (He was sitting closer to me) and he was very very nice and approachable. 10 - Tresspas and Nursery Cryme tours... easy they were the only ones I didin't attended Live... Privileges of being an old Portuguese guy, and the son of an Airline employee... free airplane tickets, and then studying in Paris for 7 years. I even had the chance of attending the Lamb tour twice in Cascais, 1975., befor Peter split. Thanks, best regards and sorry for the long text... You asked for it... 1. Duke, Invisible Touch or We Can't Dance. I can't specify it further between those three. I don't listen to whole albums as opposed to individual songs as much anymore. I really love proggy (and sometimes the poppy) 80s-Genesis, so I very often listen to the Duke suite, Domino, Tonightx3, The Brazilian, Driving The Last Spike, Fading Lights and the likes. Close behind those three albums it's Selling England and Trick of the Tail, I would say.
    2. FGTR and (shame on me) Trespass.
    3a. Duke
3b. Peter Gabriel - Us and Tony Banks - Strictly Inc. (That last one especially but not solely because of An Island in the Darkness, which might be his greatest achievement tied with Firth of Fifth and One For The Vine).
    4. Invisible Touch is on the same (incredibly high) level of quality as Selling England. Both are considerably better albums than The Lamb.
    5. If someone pointed a gun at me, my answer would be Steve or Mike, depending on my mood, for kind of opposite reasons: Steve for seemingly creating that narrative that he's the true and sole torch-bearer of Prog-Genesis, which just isn't true. Mike for sometimes appearing extremely dismissive (more so than Phil or Tony in my experience) towards anything the band did before 1978 (as well as his proggy solo material on Smallcreep's Day).
    6. I'm sorry, but things like Ravine and The Waiting Room. I really don't care for much of that (as it seems to me) padding material on sides 3 and 4 of The Lamb.
    7. None. Again, if someone pointed a gun at me, I would probably say FGTR, because I love songs like One Man's Fool, The Dividing Line and the title track on CAS. But I also love Am I Very Wrong?. So I actively wish to erase none.
    8. Do The Neurotic
    9. Tony. He's my favourite member and one of my favourite songwriters/composers of all time. For some reason, I never really saw him as that grumpy as he's always thought of in interviews as well. Something about the way he acts and talks (especially about himself) always resonated with me, probably because I see a bit of myself in him, actually. I think that dinner conversation would either result in catastrophe and we'd end up hating each other, or it'd go really well and go on for hours.
    10. I want to see Mama. So something from that tour onwards. How about the American leg of the Invisible Touch tour, where they played Apocalypse in 9/8 followed by Invisible Touch? Yes, I think that would be my pick.

    1. I don't have a particular Genesis album I listen to the most. I dislike listening to the same album (or even song) over and over, so I tend to just jump around all over their discography. It's excellent enough that you can put on most any of their albums at any given time.
    2. My least listened to Genesis album is "From Genesis to Revelation". I put on "Calling All Stations" perhaps once every 5 years, so the aforementioned album gets even fewer spins than that...
    3. My favourite Genesis album? Selling England by the Pound from the Peter era. Duke from the Phil era. Favourite solo album is No Jacket Required.
    4. Controversial opinion? "Illegal Alien" is not only a great song, but it's also hilarious and not offensive at all. I LOVE it. I love "Who Dunnit It" too. And I can't stand "Second's Out". I think the musicianship is great, but I hate Phil's early, clean voice.
    5. I don't dislike any of the band members, but if forced to choose, I suppose I'd have to say Ant Phillips, purely because he did so little with the band before quitting.
    6. My least favourite Genesis track would be one of the B-sides. Probably "Naminanu". Utter trash.
    7. I'd remove Calling All Stations from their catalogue. Mike and Tony didn't like it. Ray didn't like it. We didn't like it. It's depressing to listen to.
    8. I never saw Genesis live. I've seen all the live videos, of course, so I'd have to choose a track that I haven't heard them play live at all. Hmm.
Well, it's either "Cul-de-sac" or "You Might Recall". I think they would've worked wonderfully on stage.
    9. I'd have lunch with Tony. In fact, I'd want to do everything with Tony except share his bed! He's my favourite band member. I mean, he IS Genesis.
    10. I'd go back to the Selling England by the Pound tour. The band still had all of its members and were at the peak of their powers.

    3. Hello, I Must Be Going (I really like Gabriel's Us and considered that as my answer, but I just love Phil's stuff too much. I think Us is better than So.)
    4. Wind and Wuthering is just "OK." Maybe "The Brazilian is much better than "Do the Neurotic."
    5. Gabriel if I'm honest (only thinking of core five; leaving out Ant and Ray) Not sure Hackett's presence was really felt until he left. Their sound totally changed. Ironic he is out there playing mostly Genesis these days...
    6. I think I like them all but a few that just haven't grabbed me over the years for one reason or anouther include: Who Dunnit; Ballad of Big; Your Own Special Way; Small Talk; Alien Afternoon; Tell Me Why; Squonk; All in a Mouse's Night; Epping Forest; Giant Hogweed.
    7. FGTR if I include the album. Otherwise, it's Calling All Stations, but only if I had known they'd only do one with Ray. A distant third is Nursery Cryme.
    8. I would have loved to have seen the end of Supper's Ready live, as well as Behind the Lines; Duke's Travels/Duke's End; Deep in the Motherlode; Dodo/Lurker. Of ones they didn't ever do live, I'd say You Might Recall or Cul de Sac.

Yes, the 80 Duke Tour was fantastic and the Lyceum footage is a treasure. That was the last time they played in small theaters for the most part, instead of 15,000 seat Hockey arenas. They could have easily sold out the bigger arenas but they played the smaller intimate theaters instead. Seeing them do the entire Duke Suite live in intended order was so cool, the once and only time they did that. The 80 Duke Tour overlapped a lot with the 2007 Reunion Tour set list wise. Seeing Ripples again for the first time since 80 was a real treasure. As well as the return of Los Endos (they didn't play that signature main set closer in 92 or 97-98), the Cage Medley and the Carpet Crawlers to close it out. I went all out and saw 4 shows on that 2007 Tour figuring that would be it. And since I didn't want to see Phil in tough condition, I was good with 2007 being my last live Genesis.
Who Dunnit? is far from a fav, but I have to admit, seeing them do that goofy tune live with Mike drumming, the snorkels etc was actually pretty funny and kind of showed them humorous and lighthearted. They played literally 200 yards away from my dorm room at our small on campus basketball arena for the Abacab Tour. I couldn't believe they played on our campus.

    1. I've probably listened to The Lamb the most, because it requires more concentrated listening. But I usually rotate through the whole collection equally. So it's a hard call.
    2. The one I listen to least is Calling All Stations, because it's the only Genesis album I refuse to have in my collection. It's one of 3 albums that came out around the same time that I feel exist mainly to insult my intelligence. The others being ELP's In The Hot Seat and Yes's Open Your Eyes.
3a. My favorite is probably Wind And Wuthering, possibly because it was the first Genesis album I bought, but I think there is a kind of pathos to it that really gets to me. Not that they don't have that on other albums, they just really went all in on it with this one.
3b. Favorite solo album is difficult. There's a lot to remember. Apparently I relate to Steve Hackett's solo albums more than the others. And my favorite Steve album is Spectral Mornings. My favorites from other members would be The Geese And The Ghost from Ant, Face Value from Phil, Bankstatement from Tony, and the album with Games Without Frontiers from Pete. Mike's solo stuff I find the hardest to get into.
    4. Actually, Supper's Ready died of overkill for me a long time ago. But on the whole, Genesis is a hard band to find anything bad to say about. I'd have far more controversial things to say about ELP or Yes. But I'm sure other fans would disagree. So I'm going to say my most controversial take on Genesis is that their output from Genesis To Revelation to We Can't Dance demonstrates a perfect body of work that constantly progressed from a perfect beginning to a perfect and well-defined end. This I can not say about any other band of their era, who all lost their vision and put out duds from time to time. But Genesis never put out a dud album, until Calling All Stations, which to me is an unwanted anti-climax that should not be allowed to mar their previous perfection.
    5. My least favorite member would be Mike, mainly because I don't like his solo stuff. But also because I'm the least aware of what he contributes to the band. I'm sure I'd miss him if you took him out of the mix, and then I'd be like, "Oooh, that's what Mike does." But he's the only member whose contributions aren't sonically stamped with his name on them to my ears most of the time. Consequently, I value him less than the others. But, if I could pick the components of the music apart and see what parts are his, I'd probably find he's just as valuable to me as any of the others.
    6. Least favorite Genesis track. Mama. Only song I ever skip over on a Genesis album. It's too long and I really don't like the electronic vocal sounds on it. In a way it's one of the Proggiest things they did in the 80's, and it kind of calls back to The Musical Box, but it just sounds awful, gives off a creepy vibe and goes on for far too long.
    7. Which record needs to be removed. Calling All Stations, for reasons previously stated. You can apologize for it all you want. But an apologist just makes excuses for the un-excusable. They never really justify anything.
The reason you don't get the transition from Genesis To Revelation to Trespass is because there's a whole album's worth of unreleased tracks in between them. I had a friend who collected them and put them in order of development. And it effectively provided the missing link.
    8. Well, outside of video I never saw Genesis live. So, technically all of them. But, since there is no footage of The Lamb I will take The Lamb as one 90 minute tune and say not seeing that live is my biggest regret.
    9. None, really. I'm a really shy person and a terrible conversationalist. I was stuck in a bar with Ambrosia once because their bus was late, and I said not a word to them. I left the talking up to a friend who was more a fan of them than I was. And I had a similar opportunity to get chatty with The Tubes. But seriously, what am I going to say to a band? "Really love your stuff."? There really is no question that I could ask a member of Genesis that I haven't heard answered already. So, unless we were going to be working together on some project that had details to be hashed out, having lunch with them would just be awkward as all hell.
    10. Well, The Lamb Tour, of course. But also probably any of the 80's tours which I skipped because I had progitice at the time, thinking it wasn't worth it if they weren't a serious Prog band anymore, which I realized later was an incredibly stupid thing to think. Consequently, I ended up seeing every major Prog band but Genesis. I did see Phil Collins on the Seriously Live Tour, but that's no consolation.

Sheesh. Bee in your bonnet over Calling All Stations. CAS has more quality music than WCD, IT, Genesis and Abacab. Its their best album since Duke. It is very similar to ATTWT in that both albums are Banks/Rutherford dominated.
The title track, Uncertain Weather, Dividing Line, There Must Be Some Other Way, One Man's Fool all worthy epic Progressive music hearkening back to the late 70s era imo. I don't understand people who just won't give it a chance.

People have to listen to an album to not like it. So we that don't like it gave it a chance. We listened, we barfed, and then we threw the CD in the trash can.
If it is driving you buggy that other people don't like an album you like, please seek help immediately for this unhealthy obsession.

Your first post said "I don't have CAS in my collection", so based on that I assumed you never bothered buying it or listening to it. That would have provided you an excuse, but now that you claim you actually listened to it, we'll just chalk it up to bad taste and questionable judgment. Sounds like you're a real horse's azz, so I'm not going to sweat it. Hard to take someone who's never seen Genesis live seriously anyway.

    Instant response
    1. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway / It’s the most cinematic, and absorbing. next best; Selling England
    2. Genesis to Revelation.
    3. Peter Gabriel’s *Scratch*. Ground breaking in form and narrative and dense with lyrical smarts- more cinematic in imagery than most.
    4.
    5. Tony Banks is the heart and soul of the whole Gemnesis sound and much of the content, but he comes across as very certain in his views. I don’t think I’d enjoy his company.
    6. Robbery Assault and Battery.
    7.
    8. Harold the Barrel.
    9. Peter Gabriel, just to hear his thoughts on side projects and ideas about my fantasy partnerships with say Netflix or Neil Gaiman to dramatise The Lamb.
    10. The Lamb tour. I saw them at Glasgow Apollo (you can find it on You Tube), in 1976. bur Peter was gone, and although and A Trick of the Tail is a solid masterpiece, and that gig was maybe one of the best live experiences I’ve witnessed - the opportunity of seeing Peter front the band had passed.

I saw Steve's last London gig in 77 and I can tell you that Supper's Ready is awesome live. I suggest you watch Steve's current band playing SR which is arguably better than the original. For me, the Trick of the Tail era was the high point. The baggage with Steve was putting up with Tony Banks for six years. Steve's recent solo stuff is amazing, especially his most recent release. Voyage of the Acolyte is better than all the post Steve stuff.

The most: Duke & The Lamb
Least: probably Nursery Cryme. No shade, just feel like I’ve heard it enough
Fav solo, if I gotta pick 1: PG Us
    Controversial: don’t wanna say
    Least fav: Chris Stewart
    Least fav track: In Hiding
Remove: nah. It is what it is.

    Lunch: Phil 1000%.
Back in time: The Lamb definitely.

    1. In terms of playing the whole thing, Trick. Coming off the shelf, Seconds Out.
    2. Trespass/FGTR
    3. Favorites solo? Acolyte
    4. That Steve leaving did not ruin the band. How could a guy whose songs weren't being played ruin it by leaving?
    5. Peter. His contributions are overstated, his interviews are dull, and his solo career is pretentious.
    6. Of the "big" tracks, Get 'Em out by Friday. Great playing, but the structure is incoherent and the ending makes no sense.
    7. Remove from the Catalog? CAS -- only because they should have waited for Phil to get his head out of his ass. It's a great record, though.
    8. To SEE live? The Lamb/Musical Box from the Seconds Out performance, Abacab at Wembley '87, and In The Cage from LA in '86.
    9. Phil or Tony. I'd be talking very technical stuff about writing with Tony.
    10. Any of them. Except the last two tours. Not enough Phil drumming.

    1. Invisible Touch is the one I’ve listened to the most but if I had to take one to a desert island it would be Selling England by the Pound or Wind
    2. Trespass although I love Stagnation (I’ll skip from Genesis to Revelations which is too obvious)
    3. So. Gabriel at beginning of a 10 year string of brilliance
    4. Good question Not a fan of any of the live albums
    5. Now a bad question. Haha. I’ll say Steve simply because he left too soon. The 2 post PG albums he was on Tail and Wind were great
    6. Who Dunnit
    7. Not fair to include Calling All Stations or Revelations so excluding them it pains me to say Abacab
    8. They’ve played many of the great Peter era tracks in the last few tours I’ve seen since the 1980’s so I will go with the obvious Supper’s Ready
    9. Peter Tony Mike and Steve all seem very low key with little sense of humor so it has to be Phil to get good stories and a lot of laughs
10 Tricks/Wind tour. Saw the 2007 and 2021 tours and they were great nostalgic shows. Sad to see the end of the live era

  • @reallyretro

Most played album: 1983 Shapes album
Least played album: And Then There Were Three
Favorite Solo Album: No Jacket Required
Controversial opinion album: Trick of the Tail is way overrated, and basically a two track album with Sqounk and Los Endos being the standouts
Least favorite member: Tony Banks, simply based on how fast he talks, and his overall uptight attitude, but NOT based on his musical ability whatsoever.
Least favorite track: I Can’t Dance
What could be removed: And Then There Were Three, because I still feel like it is not a proper first trio album from them. It should have been Duke as the first album for them as a trio.
Live Pick: Domino. Still my favorite like song ever from them.
Lunch: Mike Rutherford, because he would crack me up the whole time, and is a fantastic storyteller.
Tour I would have loved to see: Wind and Wuthering tour. Their first with Chester, and the bridge between the different eras of the band

    1. The Genesis album I listen to the most is probably Live Over Europe 2007. It has a great collection of songs that spans their entire career.
    2. The Genesis albums I listen to the least are the albums that don't include Phil. So From Genesis To Revelation, Tresspass and Calling All Stations. They're not bad albums but I admit that I'm biased towards Phil
    3. Favourite solo album is a toss up between No Jacket Required and But Seriously.
    4. Most controversial opinion. Again, going back to that Phil bias I think that Phil sings the Peter era songs better than Peter did.
    5. Least favourite song? Probaby Who Dunnit
    6. Album I wish could be removed? Calling All Stations. Nothing against Ray but by the time that album came around nobody could think of Genesis without Phil Collins. Honestly I think Calling All Stations biggest ''problem'' is that it's called a Genesis album. If Mike and Tony changed the name of the band (Which might have been too big of a risk) then maybe people would be more accepting of it?
    7. I know I said I'm bias towards Phil but the Genesis member I'd want to have lunch with the most is either Tony or Peter.
    8. I'd love to go back and experience the Invisible Touch Tour. Specifically the early 1986 shows that have Follow You Follow Me and Your Own Special Way in the setlists, and I'm pretty sure the full version of Mama is performed during those 86 shows. Also this tour has the best version of Abacab. And Tonight, Tonight, Tonight was performed in full

    1. Depends on my mood… lately it’s probably Invisible Touch.
    2. From Genesis To Revelation, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like it by any means.
    3. A Curious Feeling.
    4. The Brazilian is a phenomenal instrumental track and is on par with Los Endos or In That Quiet Earth.
    5. If we are going with the “core”, I’m going to go off a little bit of a different approach to your question, I’m going to focus just on their contribution to Genesis, and I would say sadly Steve, and maybe it’s unjust cause he really didn’t get much time to bloom with his own, but his solo work is really good.
    6. Harlequin and Your Own Special Way. I skip those, I made an edit to YOSW to make it tolerable.
    7. By default, FGTR, but again I really enjoy that album.
    8. In person, The Brazilian! Live recording as a whole, Just A Job To Do.
    9. Tony, I would like to hear his story.

    2) Calling all Stations, though I still really like it (I adore FGTR it's a brilliant psych pop lp)
    3) Peter Gabriel III (Melt) (probably the most influential, critically sound album of all of them)
    4) Calling All Stations should have been done under a different band name like Rutherford/Banks. It would of been much more well received and perhaps they could of continued on without the pressure of the Genesis name.
    5) Rutherford least favorite (love MIke as a Bassist & songwriter but the guy is not that great of a guitarist)
    6) Least favorite would be Since I Lost You, or any of the sappy, sh*ty ballads Phil brought in on IT or WCD.

    7. Calling All Stations (PC brought too much to Genesis to go on without him)
    8. In the Cage (Medley)
    9. Phil (of course)
    10. Turn it on Again (or Wembley - Invisible Touch)

I really don’t have a least favorite Genesis track and here is why Scott: The Legacy of Genesis is defined by all the catalog that they have left behind. So every track is a statement to where the band was at a certain time. So in other words if you took away certain songs from albums let’s take “Who Dunnit?” it wouldn’t be ABACAB. It was their punk statement. So leave all the albums the way they are. Even though I don’t card for Supper’s ready I respect where it is in the Discography of the band.

Your controversial opinion is incorrect because Tony used his classical education to help build suppers ready from all those disparate parts. The 7th section is a recapitulation of the 3rd section after the reprise of the first section. Yes it’s disparate parts, all epics are made this way. You just don’t like suppers ready and that’s fine.

    1. Lamb
    2. FGTR
    3. Face Value
    4. Phil Collins era is better than the PG one / The last domino was painful to watch / Invisible Touch isn't as bad as people say.
    5. Anthony Phillips, not much a fan of their early work.
    6. Any filler song from the Lamb (mostly instrumental that only served to PG to change between suits on concerts). The waiting room/silent sorrow/the ravine.
    7. Calling all stations. Fading Lights was a great ending for Genesis.
    8. Please don't ask
    9. Tony Banks
    10. I'm between The Lamb tour's second leg from 75' and Invisible Touch tour's first leg from 86'.

    5. Hit wrong button so wasn’t through yet. I guess add Ray as least favorite. I picked Mike just because he’s my least favorite of Phil, Mike and Tony but nothing personal,
    6. Illegal Alien, Driving Last Spike
7, Calling All Stations. They should have recorded it under another name. Phil was too much a part of Genesis and this record is too far from his style and what people knew and expected of Genesis. It’s a decent record on its own.
    8. On the Shoreline. For Phil solo, I wish he’d sung live We Said Hello Goodbye. My favorite Phil song.
    9, PHIL!
    10. 1987 Invisble Touch tour. Phil was at his peak vocal and performance ability.and that dvd was spectacular. They upped the speed of the songs and they were just tight. I also liked WCD tour in 1992. I agree- love Phil’s mullet! The 80s were a great time in my life and we took that time and music for granted.

I would not remove any record from the Legacy. If I had to though remove one it would be Genesis to Revelation because they never owned the rights to those songs so no harm there.

    1) A Trick of the Tail
    2) Calling all Stations
    3) Voyage of the Acolyte
    4) ABACAB (the album) sounds like a collection of studio outtakes; uninspired song writing and a significant drop in quality from Duke
    5) Rutherford - Great musician, great guy but arguably the most replaceable.
    6) Illegal Alien or I can't Dance
    7) Calling all Stations - I never regarded it as a Genesis album, more a Banks/Rutherford project with some hired hands. A Genesis album needs Phil or Pete on vocals, and certainly Phil on drums.
    8) Undertow
    9) Steve Hackett
    10) Either The Lamb or Duke

I’m the anti-Patrick Bateman (American Psycho): I never quite understood Genesis’ descent into more pop oriented bland and sterile waters: too commercial.

    2 Calling All Stations
    3 Peter Gabriel IV
4 Invisible Touch is a nice B side
5 Ray because he never fitted in and his solo songs are the most boring
    6 Invisible Touch/Never A Time/In Too Deep/Alone Tonight
7 Calling All Station (sterile, boring, lame)
8 The Knife / Back in NYC
    9 Peter Gabriel
10 The Lamb tour of course
